La Fiesta de la Epifanía Queridos hermanos y hermanas, esta es una fiesta muy bella porque está llena de la luz: la luz de una estrella que conduce a estos sabios de oriente hacia el regalo de María, hacia el cuerpo de ese pequeño bebe, el Rey de Israel. La primera lectura: “levántate, sonríe, Jerusalén, que ya llega tu luz y brilla en ti la Gloria del señor”, Isaías 60:1 Estas palabras de Consuelo y de sanación para los judíos que estaban deportados y que se sentían decaídos, para esos que no creían que Dios pudiera restaurar el reino de David, esas palabras se cumplieron plenamente cuando Jesús, que es el del que nace. Jesús, el que dijo: “yo soy la luz del mundo Jn 8:12, nació en Belén, en la ciudad de David y brillo en Jerusalén como Rey, sobre todo desde el trono de la cruz. Pero en este día de luz hay también tinieblas. Lo que nos presenta la liturgia de este día es una tierra que tiene las señales suficientes para llegar donde Jesús, porque Jesús mismo es la señal suficiente que nos lleva hacia Dios Padre, hacia la plenitud de Salvación, hacia la plenitud también de nuestra realización como personas. Esa es la vida Humana; es una noche si porque hay dolor, porque hay traición, porque hay pecado y ¿Quién de no-sotros podría negarlo? Es una noche, pero una noche don-de hay señal: estrellas, luces, que si nos dejamos guiar, nos conducen hasta la luz mayor que es Jesucristo. De aquí podemos sacar una enseñanza para nuestro tiem-po: esta fiesta de la Epifanía es una gran celebración de esperanza para nosotros los cristianos; la Esperanza no se construye con una noche cerrada y negra, la esperanza no se necesita en un paraíso de delicias; el mundo no es ni un paraíso de delicias ni una noche cerrada y negra. El Mundo es esto que nos ha dicho la escritura: La tierra cubierta de tinieblas, las naciones envueltas por la noche, pero el Señor ira dando su luz y su gloria desde Jerusalén. Tener esperanza no es negar el mal, pero tener esperanza si es derrotar el mal, porque aquel que le otorga al mal la última palabra ha entregado su capacidad de bien. Hoy más que nunca nosotros los cristianos tenemos en la luz de Jerusalén Fuerza para la Esperanza. Hermanos y hermanas, acogemos la luz abundan-te de Jesús, escondamos todo nuestro ser ante el sol de Jerusalén, que ese sol pueda transformar, embellecer, broncear toda nuestra vida.

The Feast of the Epiphany Dear brothers and sisters, this is a beautiful cele-bration because it is full of light: the light of a star that leads these wise men from the east to the gift of Mary, to the body of that little baby, the King of Israel. The first reading: "Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you." Isaiah 60:1 These words of comfort and healing were for the Jews who were deported and who felt listless, for those who did not believe that God would restore the kingdom of David. The words were fully met as originated by Jesus. Jesus, who said: "I am the light of the world (Jn 8:12), was born in Bethlehem, in the city of David and shine in Jerusalem as King, especially from the throne of the cross. But in this day of light there is also darkness. What the liturgy presents us of this day is a land that has enough signs to get to where Jesus is because Je-sus himself is enough of a sign that leads to God the Fa-ther, to the fullness of salvation, to the fullness of our re-alization of becoming better persons. That is Human Life; it is a darkness because there is pain, because there is trea-son, because there is sin and who among us could deny it? It is a night, but a night where there are signs: stars and, lights. If we let ourselves be guided, it will lead us to the greater light that is Jesus Christ. From this we can draw a lesson for our time: the feast of the Epiphany is a celebration of hope for us Chris-tians; Hope is not constructed in one closed dark night, hope is not needed in a paradise of delight; the world is not a paradise of delight or a closed black night. The World is what this scripture has said: The land cov-ered with darkness, the nations wrapped in the evening, but the Lord will give light and glory from Jerusalem. To hope is not to deny evil, but to have hope is to defeat evil, because he who grants evil the last word has given up his capacity for good. Today more than ever we Christians have in the light of Jerusalem, Strength for Hope. Brothers and sisters receive the abundant light of Jesus, tuck away all our being before the sun of Jerusalem. May the sun transform, beautify, and bronze throughout our lives.

Are You Being Called To Become A Deacon? Diaconate Formation Office: Informational Meeting for Men Interested in the Perma-

nent Diaconate, Sunday, January 18. The Diaconate Formation Office will be hosting an informational meeting for all men who are interested in finding out more about becoming a

permanent deacon in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Members of the Archdiocesan Diaconate Formation Office will be present to explain the role of the deacon in the Church, the Diaconate Formation Program, and to answer any questions that participants might have. Shopping mall safety tips. It’s easy for kids to get sidetracked with all the sights, sounds, and smells surrounding us at holiday time. It is espe-cially important to monitor your children when taking them through the mall during the Christ-mas season. If children become separated from you, teach them to look for a “safe stranger” who can help them. For example, a mom with kids or the cash register person can help a child who is lost. Avoid telling children to go to the “manager.” Any adult in a suit, who looks im-portant, can look like the manager to a child. Children must be told never to leave the mall or store to go looking for you in the parking lot. Let them know that you would never go outside or leave until you are reunited -- no matter what anyone else tells them.

ECOLOGY CORNER Eco-friendly New Year Tips

Drive Less ♦ Transportation is the second-largest source of CO2 emissions,

according to the EPA. Although the Obama administration recent-ly finalized a 54.5 MPG fuel efficiency standard, there is still a lot we can do right now to diminish transportation-related carbon emissions.

♦ The best, zero-carbon option is to walk or bike. According to a study last year from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, "short trips on bicycles could save approximately four trillion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, 1,100 lives and $7 billion in mortality and health care costs for the [Midwest] every year."

♦ Another option is to use public transportation, if it is offered in your city. The American Public Transportation Association claims that a commuter can cut household carbon emissions by 10% without a car, and up to 30% by eliminating a second vehicle.

Cut Down On Water Waste Americans are some of the biggest consumers of water worldwide, ac-cording to the EPA. We use 100 gallons on average per day, while Europeans of equal lifestyle use only about 50. Since we are living at a time when half the world's population will face water scarcity issues within two decades, reducing your water use makes sense. Wear Slippers There is nothing like cozy slippers to keep your feet warm; heat rises, and cold air settles by the floor. Your whole body will feel warmer if your feet are warm and you’ll be able to turn your heat down a few degrees by wearing a hat (to retain the body heat that you lose through your head) and slippers (to protect your feet from the cold air near the floor). Cut Down On Paper Waste Paper is a resource that could easily be reused and utilized in an envi-ronmentally-friendly fashion. According to the Clean Air Council, a ton of paper made from recycled paper saves up to 17 trees and uses only half the water of paper from virgin pulp. In fact, the energy equivalent of 185 gallons of gasoline is saved for every ton of paper recycled. To reduce your waste from paper, be sure to recycle properly and re-solve to subscribe digitally to your favorite magazines and newspapers. If possible, choose to stop receiving paper bills and statements, and make payments electronically.

Informational Sessions on the Law AB60 AB 60: Driver Licenses for Undocumented Workers. In January 2015, undocumented workers will have their first opportunity to obtain Cali-fornia driver licenses thanks to the passage of Assembly Bill 60 by the state legislature on September 2013. With the help of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Mary Immaculate will give informational sessions for those interested in applying. Information will be given on the require-ments including how to fill out the application form. The sessions will be held in the Auditorium # 1 on January 23rd from 7 pm-9pm, January 24th from 10 am-12pm, and February 20th from 7 pm-9pm. Before you decide whether or not to apply, come to one of these sessions to be properly informed of the benefits of having a Driver Li-cense.

Sesiones Informativos Sobre la Ley AB60 AB 60: licencias de conducir para los trabajadores indocumentados. En enero de 2015, los trabajadores indocumentados tendrán su primera oportunidad de obtener las licencias de conducir de California, gracias a la aprobación de la Ley 60 de la Asamblea por la legislatura estatal en septiembre 2013. Con la ayuda de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, María Inmaculada dará sesiones de información para los interesados en aplicar. Se dará información sobre los requisitos además de ayudar co-mo llenar el formulario de la solicitud. Las sesiones se llevaran a cabo en el Auditorio #1 el 23 de enero de 7pm-9pm, 24 de enero de 10am-12pm y el 20 de febrero de 7pm-9pm. Antes de decidir si apli-car o no venga a una de estas sesiones para estar debidamente informa-do de los beneficios de tener una licencia de conducir.

Caballeros de Colon —María Inmaculada Si usted desea ayudar al párroco, y su comunidad de María Inmaculada, se está formando un Consejo de Caballeros de Colon en español con ese propósito. Esta organización está al servicio del párroco de la parro-quia y de ayudar a la comunidad en sus necesidades. Se les invita a todos los caballeros mayores de 18 años de edad a vivir esta experien-cia que les cambiara su vida familiar. Knights of Columbus—Mary Immaculate If you want to help the pastor, and the community of Mary Immaculate, we are forming a Council of Knights of Columbus in Spanish for that purpose.
