Parish Mission StatementParish Mission StatementParish Mission StatementParish Mission Statement

“What then is a parish? It is the smallest section of the one universal flock which has been entrusted to Peter by the Lord.

Under the authority of a responsible priest who has received the care of souls from his

bishop, the parish is, within the Church of Jesus Christ, the first community of Christian life; it is a

community cut to human dimensions, in which the shepherd can know his flock and the flock can know

their shepherd … At the heart of this area, we find the parish church with its bell-tower, its baptistery, its

confessional, its altar and tabernacle, a symbol of unity and the centre of community life.”

ST. LUKE CHAPTER 20:20-26

TTTThe exchange between Jesus and certain spies regarding the payment of taxes to Caesar is an intriguing passage. St. Luke tells us that the priests and scribes "watched him closely and sent agents pretending to be righteous who were to trap Him in speech, in order to hand Him over to the

authority and power of the governor" (v. 20). Their "watching" of Jesus hearkens back to the same actions of Jesus' adversaries in the episode of the healing of the man with dropsy (cf. 14:1). In this passage, the spies that are seeking to trick Jesus ask him, "Is it lawful for us to pay tribute to Caesar or not?" If Jesus answered "no," then they could accuse Him of inciting opposition against Rome, and hand Him over to Pontius Pilate. If He answered "yes," they could accuse Him of supporting Rome in a way that could undermine His credibility in the people's eyes. Jesus sees through their deceit, and provides a straightforward answer that avoids both above-mentioned pitfalls. St. Luke recounts Jesus' words in vv. 23-25: "Recognizing their craftiness he said to them, 'Show me a denarius; whose image and name does it bear?' They replied, 'Caesar's.' So he said to them, 'Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.'"Jesus' shrewd response is so masterful that His adversaries are speechless: "[t]hey were unable to trap Him...so amazed were they at His reply that they fell silent" (v. 26). This again hearkens back to the episode of the healing of the man with dropsy, in which, after having observed Jesus healing the man on the sabbath, His adversaries could say nothing in reply (cf. 14:6). Sadly, the priests and scribes falsely accuse Jesus before Pontius Pilate of forbidding the payment of taxes to Caesar, which is exactly the opposite of what He says in this passage (cf. 23:2).

SCRIPTURE STUDY Jesus' teaching here correctly assesses the obligations owed to God and the State without confusing the two or setting them at odds. In other words, the civic responsibility of paying taxes does not make an individual morally culpable for the actions, ideology, or ethical priorities of the State. Rather, paying taxes is one aspect of our God-given responsibility towards the upbuilding of the common good (cf. Catechism no. 2239-2240, 2436). Jesus' recognition of Caesar's "ownership" of earthly currency affirms these principles. Nevertheless, should a conflict in religious and civic priorities arise, God must always come first (cf. Catechism no. 2242). Jesus' teaching stresses giving God His due. The Ten Commandments (and the first Three, in particular) teach us what we owe God (cf. Ex. 20:1-17). Firstly, we must have no other gods before the One, true God who has created and redeemed us. Secondly, we must not blaspheme His Name or, by extension, anything sacred. Thirdly, we must keep holy the sabbath day, which principally refers to our weekly obligation to assist at Mass. Keeping the Third commandment enables us to keep the First and Second in their positive dimensions (worshipping God and praising His Name). Nothing can dispense us from these and other basic obligations of our faith. On Monday, June 22nd, the Church honors the martyrs Sts. John Fisher and Thomas More. Both were executed in 1535 by King Henry VIII for refusing to acknowledge him as the supreme head of the Church in England. St. Thomas More's last words exemplify Jesus' teaching on religious and civic priorities: "The king's good servant, but God's first." By their intercession, may Sts. John Fisher and Thomas More enable us to be good citizens and ever-faithful Catholics.

“It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead,

that they may be loosed from sins.” (II Machabees 12:46)

“If a compassionate charity towards all that are in any distress, even towards the most undeserving, be an essential ingredient of a Christian spirit, and one in which the very

soul of religion and piety towards God consists, how much more should we exert our charity for those in spiritual need, no longer able to help themselves, and perhaps bound

to us by ties of blood or friendship?” —Fr. Herbert Thurston, S.J.

LATIN MASS PROPERS: FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

INTROIT: Psalm 26: 1, 2 The Lord is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear? The Lord is the protector of my life: of whom shall I be afraid? My enemies that trouble me have themselves been weakened and have fallen. Psalm 26: 3 If armies in camp should stand together against me, my heart shall not fear. V. Glory be to the Father.

COLLECT Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by Thee, that Thy Church may joyfully serve Thee in quiet devotion. Through our Lord.

EPISTLE: Romans 8: 18-23 Brethren, I reckon that the sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come, that shall be revealed in us. For the expectation of the creature waiteth for the revelation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him that made it subject in hope; because the creature also itself shall be delivered from the servitude of corruption, into the liberty of the glory of the children of God. For we know that every creature groaneth, and travaileth in pain, even till now; and not only it, but ourselves also, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption of the sons of God, the redemption of our body; in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GRADUAL: Psalm 78: 9, 10 Forgive us our sins, O Lord, lest the Gentiles should at any time say: Where is their God? V. Help us, O God, our Saviour; and for the honour of Thy name, O Lord, deliver us. ALLELUIA: Psalm 9: 5, 10 Alleluia, alleluia. V. O God, who sittest upon the throne, and judgest justice, be Thou the refuge of the poor in tribulation. Alleluia.

GOSPEL: Luke 5: 1-11 AAAAt that time, when the multitudes pressed upon Jesus to hear the word of God, He stood by the lake of Genesareth. And He saw two ships standing by the lake; but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets; and going up into one of the ships that was Simon’s, He desired him to draw back a little from the land: and sitting He taught the multitudes out of the ship. Now when He had ceased to speak, He said to Simon: Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon, answering, said to Him: Master, we have laboured all the night, and have taken nothing, but at Thy word I will let down the net. And when they had done this, they enclosed a very great multitude of fishes; and their net broke: and they beckoned to their partners that were in the other ship, that they should come and help them; and they came, and filled both the ships, so that they were almost sinking. Which when Simon Peter saw, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying: Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was wholly astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of fishes which they had taken: and so were also James and John the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. And Jesus saith to Simon: Fear not, from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And having brought their ships to land, leaving all things they followed him.

OFFERTORY: Psalm 12: 4-5 Enlighten my eyes, that I never sleep in death; lest at any time my enemy say: I have prevailed against him.

Preface of the Holy Trinity

SECRET We beseech Thee, O Lord, be pleased to accept these our offerings; and in Thy mercy draw even our rebellious wills unto Thee. Through our Lord.

COMMUNION The Lord is my firmament, and my refuge, and my deliverer, my God is my helper.

POSTCOMMUNION May the mysteries which we have received, O Lord, purify our hearts, and by their power may we be defended. Through our Lord.
