Introduction 1

Mary "Polly" Davisson Friend and William D. Arthur (Arters)2 lived and died in

western Virginia in the early part of the nineteenth century. They founded the town of

Fork Lick (renamed Webster Springs, then Addison) in what was to become Webster Co.,

WV. It would appear they lived ordinary uneventful lives. Our research has uncovered no

stories of these early WV pioneers who have been forgotten by all but a few amateur

genealogists. Even so, these superficial observations would be a terrible disservice to two

people whose lives would influence millions through the deeds and actions of their

children and countless descendants. Early records regarding Mary and William are

contradictory and confusing at times. This book is a "best guess" attempt to correlate and

unscramble those facts. The lives of their children, grandchildren and descendants are

somewhat easier to follow through birth, marriage, death, land and military records as

well as the US and state Census, personal correspondence and other legal documents.

Mary was the only child of Joseph Friend and Elizabeth Davisson.3 It appears that

Mary was born the same year (1787) her mother (Elizabeth Davisson/Friend) perished.

This would suggest Elizabeth may have died during or after the birth of her daughter,

although that is shear speculation on my part. Mary was raised by her Aunt Sarah4 with

her father Joseph granting custody to his brother-in-law William Wilson in 1798.

William D. (Arters) Arthur was born in 1770 in PA. The names of his parents are a

mystery in my opinion. Mary would marry William in 1802 on the first of February in

Harrison County, VA. They would carve a life out of the wilds of western Virginia while

raising at least ten children.5 It was a world without towns, stores or roads, with few

people and filled with obstacles we can never fully comprehend. The decision to live in

such a harsh and unforgiving environment would infuse them, their children and the

generations to come with a spirit which would help them to overcome the hurdles of life.

Mary and her children, grandchildren, their friends and neighbors would be swept

up into the American Civil War. The Arthur Family would find that the war would

literally evolve into a struggle of brother against brother and neighbor against neighbor.

Friends who had helped one another for decades would turn into mortal enemies during

four of the most violent years in American History. The conflict would shatter the

community and state with loyalties divided equally between the Northern and Southern

governments. They appear to have served in almost equal numbers in the Union and

Confederate Armies throughout Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, as well as some of

the Western stages of war. They would serve from the initial fights at Fort Donnellson

and the First Battle of Bull Run to the Appomattox Courthouse, by marching with

Stonewall Jackson as well as riding with George Armstrong Custer and Philip Sheridan at

it’s conclusion. Mary’s home would be destroyed by Union raiders before the War's end.

Not all the Arthurs and their friends would survive a war, which drew them into every

aspect and battle of the period. Mary and most of her family would survive the scars and

pain inflected by those terrible years of war. Life would resume and the Arthur clan

would continue to press on.

As the nation expanded, so did the Arthurs. They would marry, move through out

the county and eventually travel to the ends of the world. The descendants of Mary and

William would play fundamental roles in this country's history. These farmers and back

woodmen of West Virginia would become merchants, students, soldiers and one would

serve as the president of the West Virginia State Senate. They were drawn into WWI,

WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. One would command an ill-fated infantry

regiment at the infamous Kasserine Pass in North Africa, while others would serve across

the European and Pacific Theaters of War. Unfortunately, many Arthurs would make the

ultimate sacrifice in the defense of their country .

Mary and her family will be featured in four books, due to the enormous volume

of information. The children will be presented from the oldest to youngest in this series.

Mary’s first three children, Friend Davisson Arthur, William Randolph Arthur and

Elizabeth Catherine Arthur will be featured in Book I. Her next two children,

Wilson Arthur and John Warwick Arthur will be featured in Book II. Mary’s next two

children, Nathaniel C. Arthur and James Arthur 6 will be featured in Book III. Her last

three children, Richard Anderson Arthur, Mary Arthur and Sarah A. Arthur will be

featured in Book IV. Although the children are featured in one book of the series, they

will be briefly outlined in all the corresponding books. The information on

Mary Davisson Friend, as well as, an outline of her lineage back to Nils Larson Friend

(Frande) will be presented in all the books. Nils was the first Friend to immigrate to the

New World from Sweden in 1642. This series attempts to reveal a small part of this

family's history and pay tribute to the spirit that has helped build the America we now

know and love.

24 In our opinion, William’s parents remain a mystery. A few researchers have listed

Richard J. Arters (Arthur) and Mary Ann Bowman, while others cite John and Barbara Arters (Arthur). I cannot confirm or refute either claim.

About the Author

Patrick Thomas Smith was born in Oakland, Maryland and grew up in

Western Maryland. Pat is a graduate of Frostburg State College (B.S.),

West Virginia University (M.S.) and Texas A&M University (Ph.D.). Pat’s first book

was The Maps and Papers of William H.H. Friend in 2006. Since that time, he has

published twenty-four books on the Friend Family and is currently working on numerous

additional books. Pat is a member of the Friend Family Association of America and lives

in Frederick, Maryland with his wife, Roxanne and daughter Emma Gustav Smith.
