Mary Avril Seamer was born in Cleethorpes, England on April 17, 1936, the only child of William and Sophie Seamer, and moved to Scunthorpe shortly thereafter. Mary attended Scunthorpe Technical High School and eventually joined the Appleby-Frodingham Steel Company as a short-hand typist where she met David Reynolds, an engineer. Mary and David were married in 1960 and gave birth to their first daughter, Louise Elizabeth, in 1963. The family moved to Canada in 1964 where a second daughter, Amanda Jane, was born in 1965. After 6 years in Calgary the family moved to Montreal, then Ottawa, followed by 30 years in Mississauga. Mary led a full and active life raising the children. In her younger life she was an accomplished amateur actress, she was an enthusiastic card player and became a very talented quilter, receiving awards for her work and attending many "Quilt Canada" conferences across the country. She was an active member of St. Peter's Anglican church, Erindale, Mississauga, for about 30 years. Later in life, Mary was very proud to be a loving and devoted grandmother to Nico, Katie and Eric. Mary will be deeply missed and remembered with great love by her husband David, her daughters Louise Bertrand and Amanda Sinnige, her son-in-law John Sinnige and her grandchildren Nico, Katie and Eric Sinnige. Mary has left many friends and family in England and across Canada.

Prelude: ‘Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring’ (Johann Sebastian Bach) Welcome: The Rev. Maria Nightingale Opening Sentences: Celebrant: I AM the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: they that believeth

in me, though they were dead, yet shall they live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. St John 11. 25, 26.

WHETHER we live, we live unto the Lord; or whether we die, we

die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died, and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. Romans 14. 8, 9.

I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor

principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8. 38, 39.

Hymn: ‘Now Thank We All Our God’ 1. Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices,

who wondrous things hath done, in whom this world rejoices; who from our mother’s arms hath blessed us on our way with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

2. O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,

with ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us, and nourish us with grace, and guide us when perplexed, and free us from all ills in this world and the next.

3. All praise and thanks to God eternal now be given,

to Spirit and to Word, who reign in highest heaven: our ever faithful God, whom heaven and earth adore; for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

Psalm 121 Reader: I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills,

from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil:

he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Eulogy Louise Bertrand, Amanda Sinnige Scripture Readings Lesson: Lamentations 3:17-26, 31-33 Read by John Cassidy Reader: The Lesson is written in the 3rd chapter of Lamentations, beginning

at the 17th verse.

My soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is; so I say, ‘Gone is my glory, and all that I had hoped for from the Lord.’

The thought of my affliction and my homelessness is wormwood and gall! My soul continually thinks of it and is bowed down within me.

Page 5: Mary Avril Reynolds

5

Reader: But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’

The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. For the Lord will not reject for ever. Although he causes grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; for he does not willingly afflict or grieve anyone.

Reader: Here endeth the Lesson. Epistle: 1 Corinthians 13 Read by John Sinnige Reader: The Epistle is written in the 13th chapter of the 1st letter to the

Corinthians, beginning at the 1st verse.

If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Page 6: Mary Avril Reynolds

6

Reader: Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

Reader: Here endeth the Epistle. The Holy Gospel: John 14:1-7 Reader: The Holy Gospel is written in the 14th chapter of the gospel

according to St. John, beginning at the first verse. People: Glory be to thee, O Lord. Reader: ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in

me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’

Reader: The Gospel of Christ. People: Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Homily The Rev. Maria Nightingale Verse Celebrant: I heard a voice from heaven, saying unto me, Write, from

henceforth blessed are the dead which die in the Lord: Even so, saith the Spirit, for they rest from their labours.

Apostle’s Creed Celebrant: Please join me in saying the words of our faith, All: I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell;

The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn: ‘Abide with Me’ 1. Abide with me: fast falls the eventide;

the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail, and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Page 8: Mary Avril Reynolds

2. Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day; earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away; change and decay in all around I see: O thou, who changest not, abide with me.

3. I need thy presence every passing hour;

what but thy grace can foil the tempter’s power? Who like thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

4. I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless;

ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if thou abide with me.

5. Hold thou thy cross, before my closing eyes;

shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies; heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee: in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

The Preparation of the Gifts Prayer over the Gifts Celebrant: God of mercy,

accept the worship we offer you this day. Increase, we pray, our faith, deepen our hope, and confirm us in your eternal love. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord.

People: Amen.

Thanksgiving and Consecration Celebrant: The Lord be with you; People: And with thy spirit. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts; People: We lift them up unto the Lord.

Page 9: Mary Avril Reynolds

9

Celebrant: Let us give thanks unto our Lord God; People: It is meet and right so to do. Celebrant: IT is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all

times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God, Creator and Preserver of all things.

Celebrant: THEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the

company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee and saying:

All: HOLY, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts,

Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.

BLESSED is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

Celebrant: BLESSING and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee Almighty

God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took Bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.

Page 10: Mary Avril Reynolds

10

Celebrant: Likewise after supper he took the Cup; and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all, of this; for this is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.

Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble

servants, with all thy holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do make before thee, in this sacrament of the holy Bread of eternal life and Cup of everlasting salvation, the memorial which he hath commanded; And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy Communion may be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer Celebrant: Together we pray: All: Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

AT THE GRAVE Opening Prayer Celebrant: In the midst of life we are in death: of whom may we seek for

succour, but of thee, O Lord? Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts; shut not thy merciful ears to our prayer; but spare us, Lord most holy, O God most mighty, O holy and merciful Saviour, thou most worthy judge eternal.

Committal Celebrant: Forasmuch as it hath pleased Almighty God of his great mercy to

receive unto himself the soul of our dear sister Mary here departed: we therefore commit her body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; in sure and certain hope of the Resurrection to eternal life, through our Lord Jesus Christ; who shall change our mortal body, that it may be like unto his glorious body, according to the mighty working, whereby he is able to subdue all things to himself.

God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the resurrection and the life; in whom whosoever believeth shall live, though he die; and whosoever liveth, and believeth in him, shall not die eternally; who also hath taught us (by his holy Apostle Saint Paul) not to be sorry, as those without hope, for them that sleep in Jesus: We meekly beseech thee, O Father, to raise us from the death of sin unto the life of righteousness; that, when we shall depart this life, we may rest in him, as our hope is this our sister Mary doth; and that, at the Resurrection in the last day, we with her may receive that blessing, which thy well-beloved Son shall then pronounce to all that love and fear thee, saying, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: Grant this, we beseech thee, O merciful Father, through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer. Amen.

Celebrant: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. All: Amen.
