MARY ANOINTS JESUS

Mary lived with her sister Martha and her brother Lazarus in the town of Bethany. Sometimes Jesus came to stay with them. Mary loved Him coming. She loved to listen to Him tell of His Father’s kingdom.

Not everyone loved Jesus like she did. Some Jewish leaders wanted to kill Him, because people were believing Jesus instead of them, especially after He had raised Lazarus from death.

On His way to Jerusalem for the Passover, Jesus visited Mary, Martha and Lazarus. He had dinner with them. While Martha served the food Mary came and knelt before Jesus. She loved him.

In her hand she had a jar of expensive perfume. She broke the jar and poured the perfume over Jesus’ feet. The smell of the perfume filled the whole house. Then she dried His feet with her hair.

As Judas looked on he said, ‘This perfume cost a lot of money. Why wasn’t it sold and the money given to the poor?’ He didn’t really care about the poor. In fact he was a thief.

Jesus answered Judas saying, ‘Leave Mary alone. She has done a beautiful thing. Today she has prepared Me for when I will be buried. ‘You will always have poor people to help, but I will not always be here with you.’

God’s people were on their way to Jerusalem for the Passover. As they walked they sang, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’

Jesus was also on His way to Jerusalem. He said to His disciples, 'Go to the village and you will find a young donkey that no one has ridden. Untie it and bring it to Me. ‘If someone asks you why you are untying it? say to them, "The Lord needs it."'

The disciples found the young donkey just as Jesus had said. They untied it and brought it to Jesus.

4

They threw a coat on its back and Jesus began riding the donkey towards Jerusalem. He was coming as Israel’s King Messiah, the One whom God had sent to save His people.

5

Jesus’ followers spread their coats on the road for the donkey to walk on. Some people cut branches of trees and waved them, saying, 'Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory to God!'

The Jewish leaders did not like everyone following Jesus. They said to Jesus, ‘Tell Your disciples to stop.’ But Jesus answered, ‘If they stop giving praise to God, the stones will do it instead!’

As Jesus rode on He caught sight of Jerusalem. He stopped and wept saying, ‘I wish you knew what would bring you peace! God came to save you and you did not know it. Jerusalem is going to be destroyed because you did not see that God had come to save you.’

Jesus went on riding until He reached Jerusalem. Then He rode through the city and came to the temple, His Father’s house.

When He got there He saw men selling things in the place set aside for people to pray. Jesus drove them out saying, ‘My house is a place for prayer, but you have changed it into a place for robbers.'

The next morning Jesus was back in the temple healing the sick and teaching the people. This made the leaders jealous. They tried to get rid of Jesus. They couldn’t, because all the people wanted to hear what He had to say about His Father’s kingdom.

Jesus told this story to the Jewish leaders: „There was a man who had a lot of land. He planted grapevines and put a fence around them. In the middle of his land he dug a wine press and built a watchtower.

„The owner was going away so he rented his vineyard to some farmers. „The grapevines grew beautifully and plenty of grapes were harvested.

„The owner sent his servants to get his share of the grapes. „The farmers did not give the servants any grapes. Instead they beat one servant, killed another and threw stones at the other.

„Other servants were sent. Surely the owner would get his share of the grapes this time. „But the farmers did not give these servants any grapes either. They did the same as before – beat one servant, killed another and threw stones at the other.

„Then the owner sent his son and said, “Surely the farmers will give him my grapes.” „But when the farmers saw the son coming they said, “Let‟s kill him then the vineyard will belong to us.” „So they killed the son.‟

After finishing the story Jesus asked the Jewish leaders, „When the owner comes back what will he do to the farmers?‟ The leaders answered, „He will kill them and get other farmers to look after his vineyard; farmers who will let the owner have his grapes.‟

Then the leaders realised that Jesus had told this story about them. They became angry and wanted to arrest Jesus, but they couldn‟t. God’s people thought they were special, but they would not continue as His people if they did not receive Jesus whom God had sent to them.

People were admiring the temple and saying how beautiful it was.

Jesus heard them and said, 'One day this temple is going to be pulled down. The stones will be scattered all over the ground.' Some of His followers asked, 'When will this happen and how will we know when it is coming?’

Before Jesus answered their question He said, 'Be careful, but don’t be afraid. There will be people who say they are the Christ. Don’t follow them. You will also hear of wars, earthquakes or troubles, but don’t be afraid.’ 'Don't be troubled if people hate you and take you to prison. This will be your chance to tell others about Me.'

Then Jesus told them what to do when the temple was pulled down. He said, ‘When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, don't pray for it. Run for your lives and go to the mountains.’ God would let Jerusalem fall for killing its Messiah.

Jesus also said, ‘You know that when you see new leaves coming on the trees, summer is not far away.’

‘In the same way there will be things happening on earth that could make you frightened. But don’t be afraid. Trust your heavenly Father and ask Him to help you. One day heaven and earth will pass away, but God’s word will never pass away.’

Some time later enemies surrounded Jerusalem. The believers did what Jesus said; ran to the mountains and were saved. Jesus said to His followers, ‘Terrible times will come on all the world, but don’t love this world. Love God and look forward to the Lord’s coming.’

Jesus is coming back again to take His people to be with Him. He wants everyone to be ready when He comes, so He told this parable.

„The kingdom of heaven will be like ten girls, with their oil lamps, going out to meet the bridegroom coming to his wedding. „Five of the girls are foolish, because they have not brought extra oil. The other five girls are wise because they have plenty of oil.

„The girls wait for the bridegroom, but he does not come when they expect him. It gets late at night. They are tired and go to sleep.

„In the middle of the night someone calls out, “The bridegroom is on his way.” „The girls wake up and get their lamps ready. The foolish girls can‟t get their lamps to stay alight, because their oil has run out. „They say to the wise girls, “Give us some oil. Our lamps are going out.” „The wise girls say, “No. There may not be enough for us. Go and buy your own.”

„The foolish girls go to buy their oil and while they are away, the bridegroom comes. „The girls who are ready go in with the bridegroom to the marriage feast and the door is shut.

„Later, the five foolish girls come back and find that everyone has gone in with the bridegroom. „They call out, “Lord, here we are, please let us in.” „He answers, “Who are you? I don‟t know you.”‟ Jesus said, „Always be ready and waiting for the Lord‟s return, because you don‟t know when He will come.‟

Jesus knew it was time for Him to leave this world and go back to God, His Father. He wanted to have this last and special meal, called the Passover, with His disciples. When everyone was seated a surprising thing happened. Jesus took off His coat, put a towel around Himself and began washing the disciples’ feet.

When He came to Peter, Peter said, ‘No! I will never let You wash my feet!’ Jesus said, ‘Peter, you do not understand what I am doing. However, later on you will. If I don’t wash your feet now, you will not receive anything from Me.’ Then Peter cried, ‘Lord, wash my hands and my head, too.’ But Jesus replied, ‘You only need your feet washed.’

When Jesus finished washing their feet He said, ‘You are clean now, but there is one here with us who is not clean. He is turning against Me. When this happens, you will know that I am the One whom God sent.’ This puzzled the disciples and they asked, ‘Am I the one who will turn against You?’

It was Judas. He did not agree with what Jesus was saying and doing. Then Satan came into Judas’ heart and he left the room. Everyone else went on eating and Jesus said, ‘The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.’

Then Jesus picked up the bread, held it in His hands, and thanked God. He broke the bread and gave it to His disciples, saying, ‘Eat this bread to remember Me. The bread is My body that will be broken for you.’

After everyone had eaten the bread Jesus took the cup of wine. He prayed and said, ‘All of you, drink from it. This wine is My blood, poured out for the forgiveness of sins. ‘Keep doing this until I come again, then we will drink together in My Father’s kingdom.’

You may have seen the communion table in church. When we have communion we are remembering that Jesus died to give us forgiveness and make the way for us to come to our Heavenly Father.

Jesus and His eleven disciples were sitting around the table after their Passover meal. Jesus said to them, ‘I am going away soon. Where I am going, you cannot come, but there is something I want you to do.

‘I want you to love one another as I have loved you. When you love one another like this, people will know that you are My disciples.’ This puzzled Peter and he asked, ‘Lord, where are You going?’

‘Peter, you can’t come with Me now, but you will later on,’ said Jesus. ‘Lord, why can’t I follow You now? I am willing to die for You,’ said Peter. ‘Peter, listen to Me!’ said Jesus. ‘Satan has got permission to test all of you, but I have prayed for you. I have prayed that your faith will not fail.’

Peter was still puzzled. He said, ‘Lord, I am ready to go anywhere with You, even to prison. I am ready to die with You.’ Jesus looked at Peter and said, ‘Tonight, before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you don’t even know Me.’ ‘This is going to trouble you but I say to you: Don’t be troubled, Trust in God. Trust in Me, also.’

Jesus said to His disciples, ‘I will not be with you much longer. Where I am going you cannot come. You will come later. Until then I want you to love one another as I have loved you. ‘Don’t let this trouble you. Trust in God. Trust also in Me.

‘In My Father’s house there are lots of rooms. I am going to get a place ready for you, so that when I come back for you you can live with Me. ‘You know where I’m going and you know the way.’

Thomas asked. ‘Lord, we don’t know where You are going. How can we know the way?’ ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life,’ said Jesus. ‘I am the only way to the Father. If you know Me, you know the Father.’

Philip still didn’t understand so he asked, ‘Lord, show us the Father. That is all we want.’ ‘Philip,’ said Jesus. ‘I have been with you all this time. Don’t you know who I am? ‘My Father lives in Me and is doing His work through Me. If you have seen Me, you have seen the Father. If you love Me, you are loved by the Father.’

‘Believe in Me. ‘If you love Me and do what I tell you, you can ask for anything in My name, and I will do it for you. ‘Because I am going away, I will ask My Father to send you another helper. This helper is the Holy Spirit. He will live in you. He will teach you what is true and help you.

‘I have loved you like My Father loves Me. This is what I want you to do. Love one another as I have loved you. You are My friends if you do what I say.’

At this time the disciples did not understand these things, but after Jesus died and rose from the dead, they knew that they had seen the heavenly Father, through being with Jesus. Not only that, they knew that Jesus had given them the way to come to their heavenly Father.

JESUS’ PRAYER

JOHN 17:1–26

Jesus knew the time had come for Him to go back to His Father and that He was going to be killed on a Cross. This was a big thing to do but He wanted to do it for His Father. Also He wanted us to have peace with His Father.

After teaching his disciples many things Jesus prayed for Himself, for His disciples and for us.

This is what Jesus prayed. ‘I have finished the work You sent Me to do. I have shown My disciples what You are like. They know that You love Me and that I love You. They belong to You.

‘I pray for the people you gave Me in this world. I pray for them because I am coming to You. Keep them safe from the Evil One. Help them to love Your word. ‘Father, I pray for those who will believe in Me. These disciples will tell others about Me. May they also know that You love them in the same way that You love Me.

5

‘Lord, I want Your glory, so that I can glorify You. I give Myself to You, so that others may also live for You.’ By this Jesus meant that He would die for us, so that we could belong to God.

After the Passover meal was finished, Jesus and His disciples went to the garden of Gethsemane.

Jesus said to His disciples, ‘Stay here. I’m going on further to pray.’ A little while later He came back to His disciples and found them asleep. He was very sad and in lots of pain, so He went away again to pray.

He said to His Father, ‘I will do whatever You want Me to do.’ Then an angel came and helped Him.

4

Jesus went back to His sleeping disciples and said, ‘Get up, here comes the man who has turned against Me.’ They looked and saw a crowd coming. Each person was carrying a sword or a club, and was following Judas.

Judas came up to Jesus and greeted Him with a kiss. This kiss was the sign for the men to arrest Jesus.

As the men were arresting Jesus Peter tried to stop them. He pulled out his sword and cut off Malchus’s ear. Jesus said to Peter, ‘Put away your sword. I could have asked My Father to protect Me. He could have sent thousands of angels. But this is what God said would happen.’ Then Jesus touched Malchus’s ear and healed it.

The men took Jesus to the High Priest, Caiaphas, and told many lies about Jesus. Jesus did not answer them. Caiaphas said, ‘I order You in God’s name to tell us. Are You the Christ, the Son of the living God?’ Jesus said, ‘I am, and soon you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of God Almighty.’

This made Caiaphas very angry. He tore his clothes and shouted, ‘We don’t need any more witnesses. He is not respecting God’s name. What shall we do with Him?’ The Council decided that Jesus should die. The people standing near Jesus started hitting Him, and making fun of Him, saying, ‘You, Prophet, tell us who hit You.’ Jesus did not answer them.

This was the awful way it came about that Jesus was killed. But Jesus knew this was the way He would bear our sins. He was doing it for His Father.

PETER DENIES THE LORD

After Jesus was arrested and taken to the High Priest’s house, Peter followed at a distance. He wanted to know what they were going to do with Jesus.

He went into the courtyard with the guards and servants and stood near the fire to keep warm. During the evening a servant-girl came up to Peter and said, ‘You were with Jesus.’ Peter was afraid and replied, ‘I don’t know what you are talking about.’

Sometime later, as he was walking towards the gate, another servant-girl saw him and said, ‘I am sure you are one of Jesus’ disciples.’ ‘No, I’m not. I don’t even know Him,’ answered Peter.

Soon after that one of the men standing nearby said to Peter, ‘It’s true! You are one of Jesus’ disciples. Didn’t I see you in the garden?’ Peter was afraid and said for the third time, ‘I tell you I am not. I don’t know him!’ While Peter was talking, a cock crowed. Peter heard it and remembered what Jesus had said to him: ‘Before the cock crows, you will deny Me three times.’

Peter realised what he had done. He had sinned against the Lord. He was so ashamed that he went outside and wept and wept. But Jesus had said that Peter would turn back from his sin and would help his brothers to believe. The Lord’s promise was stronger than Peter’s sin.

JUDAS ISCARIOT / JESUS IN PILATE’S JUDGEMENT HALL

Judas helped to arrest Jesus and was paid thirty pieces of silver. But when he saw that Jesus was going to be killed, he wished he had not helped the Jewish leaders. He went to the priests and said, ‘I have sinned. Jesus is right.’ But he couldn’t change their mind.

Judas was angry with himself because of what he had done. So he went to the temple to try and give back the money. The priests did not want the money. Judas threw it on the floor and went away. He did not ask God to forgive him. He went away and killed himself.

While this was going on Pilate was asking Jesus, ‘Are You the King of the Jews?’ Jesus answered, ‘Yes, I am.’ When the priests heard this they shouted at Him, but Jesus did not answer them.

What was Pilate to do? He knew that Jesus was a good man. He thought, ‘Maybe I can free Him. I can set one prisoner free at Passover time.’ In the prison there was a wicked man called Barabbas. So Pilate asked the people, ‘I have Jesus and Barabbas here. Who will I set free?’

The people answered, ‘Barabbas.’ ‘What will I do with Jesus?’ asked Pilate. ‘Crucify him,’ they answered. Pilate said, ‘Stop and look, Jesus hasn’t done anything wrong.’ His enemies did not listen. They were angry and shouted, ‘Crucify him.’

A riot was beginning and Pilate was afraid. He washed his hands in front of everyone and said, ‘Look, I am not guilty of Jesus’ death.’

Pilate set Barabbas free, and gave Jesus to the soldiers to be crucified.

8

Jesus was on His way and would be killed on the cross, knowing that God had sent Him to take away God’s anger against our sin. Jesus was giving us the way to be saved and live in the light of God’s truth.

WHEN JESUS DIED / FRIENDS BURY HIM

Jesus was sentenced to death and led away to be crucified. His cross was heavy to carry and He was weak. The soldiers ordered Simon of Cyrene to carry the cross to Golgotha for Jesus.

There, they nailed Jesus to the cross and put a sign on the top to say why He was being crucified. It read: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS Two thieves were crucified as well, one on each side of Jesus. When everything was done the soldiers sat down to keep watch.

As people walked by, some said, ‘If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!’ Others said, ‘He saved others, but He can’t save Himself.’ They did not understand that He was giving the world a way to be saved from God’s anger against sin.

Before Jesus died He said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’ One of the thieves cursed Jesus. The other one saw that Jesus was different and had done nothing wrong. He said, ‘Lord remember me when You come into Your kingdom.’ Jesus answered, ‘Today you will be with Me in heaven.’

In the middle of the day everything became dark. Later, Jesus cried out, ‘It is finished! Father, I give My spirit into Your hands.’ Jesus died and at the same time the big thick curtain in the temple, the one in front of the Most Holy Place, tore from top to bottom. This showed that Jesus’ death on the cross gave us the way to come straight into God’s presence to pray.

Then an earthquake shook the ground around Jerusalem, frightening everyone. ‘Truly, this Man was the Son of God!’ exclaimed a soldier.

Sometime later a man called Joseph buried Jesus’ body. He wrapped it in new cloths, laid it in the tomb and closed the opening with a big stone. Soldiers stood around guarding the tomb because Jesus had said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’

JESUS IS ALIVE

MATTHEW 28:1–10, JOHN 20:1–10 Mark 16:1–8; Luke 24:1–12

On the first Easter morning, Mary Magdalene, another Mary and some other women, got up very early and went to the tomb where Jesus was buried.

At the same time an angel of the Lord came down from heaven. There was a big earthquake. He rolled away the stone from the tomb and sat on it. He looked as bright as lightning. This frightened the guards and they fell down as though they were dead.

The angel said to the women, when they came to the tomb, ‘Don’t be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus. He is not here. He has been raised from death, just as He said He would. Come and see. Here is the place where His body lay. ‘Go and tell His disciples that Jesus has been raised from the dead and that He will see them in Galilee.’

The women were afraid but happy. They left the tomb in a hurry to find the disciples. Jesus met them. They fell at His feet and worshipped Him. Jesus said, ‘Do not be afraid. Go and tell My disciples that I will see them in Galilee.’

When Peter and John heard that the tomb was empty and Jesus had been raised from death, they ran to see for themselves. John got there first but did not go in. He looked inside and saw the linen cloths lying there. Peter came along and went straight in. John followed him.

When they saw that Jesus was not there, they believed He really had risen from death. They knew He was alive now, and later, they would understand that this was what God had promised in the Old Testament.

Two of Jesus’ disciples were walking to Emmaus, when someone started to walk with them. They did not realise it was Jesus. Jesus asked them, ‘What are you talking about?’

The disciples were surprised and asked, ‘Are You the only one who doesn’t know what has happened in Jerusalem?’ ‘What things?’ Jesus asked. ‘About Jesus,’ they replied, ‘the One who was crucified by our leaders, who was the Great Prophet, blessed by God, and who did wonderful things. We hoped Jesus would set Israel free.

‘It happened three days ago. Some have seen the empty tomb and the ladies were told by an angel that He is alive.’ Jesus answered. ‘The prophets said that this would happen, and that He would go to His Father.’

They had come to a little town and it was getting dark. The two disciples stopped and said to Jesus, ‘Come and stay the night with us.’

Jesus went in with them and at the dinner table He took the bread in His hands and blessed it. He broke it and gave it to them, just like He did before He died. Suddenly, the two disciples realised it was Jesus who had been walking with them.

Then Jesus disappeared.

The two disciples hurried back to Jerusalem and said to the others, ‘The Lord is alive! He talked with us on the road. When He blessed and broke the bread we knew it was He.’

While they were still talking Jesus suddenly appeared, and said, ‘Peace to you.’ But the disciples were afraid. Jesus asked, ‘Why are you afraid? Why do you doubt that it is Me? Take a look at My hands and feet, and see that it is Me.’ Thomas wasn’t with them. He would not believe unless he saw Jesus himself.

A week later Jesus appeared to the disciples again and Thomas was with them. Jesus said to him, ‘Come and touch the nail holes in My hands. Put your hand in My side and have faith.’ Thomas fell at Jesus’ feet and said, ‘My Lord and my God!’

Jesus said to Thomas, ‘You believe because you have seen Me. Others will not see Me but will be blessed when they believe.’ The stories of Jesus have been written down so that we who have never seen Jesus will believe in Him and be blessed.

Peter, Thomas, Nathanael and other disciples were sitting around wondering what to do. Peter said, ‘I’m going fishing.’ ‘We’re coming too,’ said his friends.

They went out onto the lake, fished all night and caught nothing. In the morning they heard someone call out, ‘Have you caught any fish?’ ‘No,’ they answered. ‘Throw the net over the right side of your boat and you’ll catch some,’ the man replied.

The disciples did what the man said, and soon the net was full. There were so many fish they couldn’t even pull up the net. John said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’

Peter quickly pulled on some clothes, jumped into the water and went to Jesus. The others dragged the fish to shore.

As they came near the beach they could see a fire with fish cooking on it. There was also bread to go with it. Jesus called out, ‘Bring some of the fish you caught.’ There were one hundred and fifty-three big fish caught in the net and it didn’t break. ‘Come and have breakfast,’ Jesus called out. This was the third time the disciples had seen Jesus, since He had risen from death.

When breakfast was finished Jesus asked Peter, ‘Simon Peter, do you love Me more than these?’ Peter answered, ‘Yes, Lord. You know that I love You.’ ‘Feed My lambs,’ said Jesus. Jesus asked Peter again, ‘Simon do you love Me?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ answered Peter. ‘You know that I love You.’ ‘Take care of My sheep,’ Jesus said to him.

For a third time Jesus asked Peter, ‘Do you love Me?’ Peter replied saying, ‘Lord, you know everything. You know that I love You.’ ‘Then feed My sheep,’ said Jesus. ‘When you are old,’ He said, ‘People will take you and kill you.’ This would be the way Peter would give glory to God. Then Jesus said to him, ‘Follow me!’

After Jesus had risen from death He appeared to His disciples and many others so they could see that He was alive.

He said to His disciples, ‘After I have gone, wait here in Jerusalem. The Father has promised to send the Holy Spirit to you, the One who will be with you forever.’ The disciples asked, ‘Does this mean that this is the time for Your kingdom to come on earth?’

Jesus said, ‘Only the Father knows when that will happen. Until then, tell others what you have seen and heard. Tell people to repent and be forgiven. ‘After I have gone, go back to Jerusalem and wait. When I am with My Father I will send the Holy Spirit to you. The Spirit will come on you to give you power to speak My word.’

While everyone was listening to Jesus, He was lifted up into heaven and disappeared in a cloud. The disciples kept looking towards heaven, then two men in white clothes appeared and said, ‘Why are you still looking up to heaven? Jesus, whom you saw go, will come back again. He will come in the same way that you saw Him go.’

The disciples went back to Jerusalem to wait for God’s Holy Spirit to come on them.

Jesus is in heaven now with His Father. He sent the Holy Spirit to us as He promised. This is the reason why we keep telling the story of Jesus and why people keep believing in Him.
