1.2 Appropriate Use

The MARTIN® standard plough scraper is exclusively intended to beused in the lower run of a conveyor belt system against the convey-ing direction to protect a return roller or reversing drum from returnmaterial and not to remove any material adhering to the conveyorbelt. The plough scraper can be used at conveyor belt speeds up to4.6 m/s and conveyor belt widths of 500 to 3000 mm.

The scraper and corresponding scraper blades can be used in tem-peratures ranging from -30 °C to +70 °C.

1.2.1 Conveyor belt systems with open transfer systems

This installation manual describes the installation on a conveyor beltsystem with an encapsulated delivery system. For the installation onan open delivery systems different MARTIN® installation consolescan be used.

If installation conditions prove to be difficult, as is the case with im-passable static components, or using the head drum as the tensionpoint, Martin Engineering or a representative can help with the posi-tioning or find customised solutions.

1.2.2 Use in EX-protection areas

Under certain circumstance the MARTIN® standard plough scrapercan also be used in potentially explosive areas. Please contact yourrepresentative or Martin Engineering.

1.2.3 Operating limits of this product

The use of this named product is only allowed within the specifiedspecifications. Using in a higher than specified equipment categoryor under operational conditions other than those named and speci-fied previously by Martin Engineering, is considered to be inappro-priate use and can only be carried out if approved by MartinEngineering.

If the MARTIN® standard plough scraper needs to be used for a dif-ferent purpose, then Martin Engineering or a representative can helpwith the product specification.

1.3 Safety at work

1.3.1 Safety instructions, safety at work

This installation manual should be read through completely beforebeginning work on the product or the customer's conveyor belt sys-tem.

The operator has to make sure that all installation, inspections, andmaintenance tasks are carried out exclusively by authorised ex-perts.

Basically, all work on conveyor belt systems and their accessorieshas to be done when the system is at a standstill. The instructions inthe relevant installation manual, which describes how to shut-downthe conveyor belt, must be adhered to.

Upon completion of work, all safety equipment and protectiveguards should be reinstalled and put back into operation.

Before commissioning the installation should be completed. Beforethe conveyor belt system can be used again, the flawless executionof all steps should be checked. All notes on installation and commis-sioning of the product should be observed.

1.3.2 Obligations of the operator

The operator of this product should ensure that the personnel al-lowed to install, maintain and use this product are only those who

• know the rules for safety and accident prevention,

• are instructed in the products use, and have read andunderstood this installation manual.

1.3.3 Authorised personnel

Personnel are considered to be authorised, that have necessarytraining, technical experience, knowledge on the relevant standardsand guidelines and are also in a position to assess any task to rec-ognise critical situation at an early phase.

Personnel are considered to be authorised, that have been instruct-ed in the use of the product and have completely read and under-stood this installation manual.

2 Description of this product

2.1 Construction and function

The MARTIN® standard plough scraper is movably positioned in thelower run of a conveyor belt system directly behind a return roller orreversing drum to effectively remove material deposits in light tomoderately heavy applications. The self adjusting design guaran-tees effective cleaning during its entire service life.

NoteA poorly or incorrectly installed product can hamper the conveyorprocess or soil the conveyed bulk material.The operator is therefore responsible for implementing the neces-sary countermeasures.When used with contaminants, Martin Engineering or a represent-ative can help with the positioning or with customised solutions.

3 Installation preparation

3.1 Before installation

3.1.1 Materials and tools required

Only standard tools are needed to install and service the MARTIN®®

plough scraper.

3.1.2 Preparatory measures

1. At delivery, check the following points:

• Is the delivery complete? Is the number of pallets / cases /containers the same as the number on the delivery note?

• Does all the transport packaging appear to be undamaged?Is there damage which may indicate that the containedproducts may be damaged?

2. If the delivery is not complete or there appears to be sometransport damage, document it and have the freight forwarderconfirm. All damaged products should be saved for inspection.

3. Depending on the scope of the order, the delivery should con-tain the following parts:

• MARTIN® Standard Plough Scraper.

• Installation manual, plus warning and safety labels.

4. Missing or damaged parts should be reported to Martin Engi-neering or the authorised dealer.

NOTEPay attention to the following checks and carry them out com-pletely.The freight forwarder is responsible for any transport damage! For any damage claims, please contact the freight forwarder.

4 Installation

4.1 Safety instructions

4.2 Installation of MARTIN® standard plough scraper

4.2.1 Determining the installation position

The MARTIN® standard plough scraper must be installed on the low-er run before the return roller. First the positions of the shafts onwhich the MARTIN® standard plough scraper is installed in the con-veyor belt system are determined.

The MARTIN® standard plough scraper is delivered in combinationwith pipe flanges. These are disassembled at the factory before de-livery and is reassembled during the installation along with theplough scraper.

The installation of the MARTIN® standard plough scraper and thepipe flange is described in this installation manual.

Following is an overview of the installation steps:

On-site conditions can vary during installation; if there are any ques-tions or problems, contact Martin Engineering or a representative.

1. Prior to commencing installation, switch off and de-energise the conveyor belt and all accessories and secure them against be-ing switched on inadvertently.

2. Position the shafts (3, Fig.1) according to table (table 3) and fig-ures 1.

3. After determining the shaft position above the conveyor belt ac-cording to the data in the table (table 2), measure the distance between the front shaft and the back of the head drum. Then mark the position for the shafts on the supporting frame.

4. Determine the installation position of the shafts:

• If the supporting structure is too low to bring the shafts intothe appropriate position, bolt or weld four steel plates of atleast 13 mm thickness (5, Fig. 1) onto the supporting frame.

• If the supporting structure is high enough to bring the shaftsinto the appropriate position, screw or weld the pipe flanges(6, Fig.1) for the shafts directly onto the support frame.

5. See Fig. 2. Mark the positions of the mounting holes as follows:

• Use the pipe flange (part no. 30208+E) as a template forthe conveyor belt of 500 mm width and mark the location ofthe holes on the supporting frame or on the steel plates foreach shaft on both sides of the conveyor belt.

• Use the pipe flange (part no. 16628+E) as a template forthe conveyor belt of 600 mm width and mark the location ofthe holes on the supporting frame or on the steel plates foreach shaft on both sides of the conveyor belt.

NOTETo facilitate maintenance, Martin Engineering recommends boltthe mounting plates to the supporting frame or the steel plate,instead of welding.

4.2.2 Bolt or weld the pipe flange to the supporting frame

Follow the steps below to bolt or weld the pipe flange to the support-ing frame or steel plates:

1. Drill two 63 mm holes for each shaft. 2. Drill four 14 mm holes for the pipe flange; if the pipe flange is

welded on, this step falls away. 3. Remove burrs and sharp edges. 4. Bolt or weld the pipe flange to the supporting frame or another

structure on both sides of the conveyor system.

4.2.3 Installation of the plough scraper

1. Push the shafts through the drill holes. Fasten each mountinglug with a bolt (1, Fig. 3) and a split pin (2, Fig. 3) to the shaft.

2. Centre the scraper blade on the conveyor belt (10, Fig. 1). Slidethe retaining rings on both sides onto each shaft up to the pipeflange (6 Fig. 1). Tighten the two adjusting screws (9, Fig. 1) onthe retaining ring.

Fasten two safety cables (3, Fig. 3) to the supporting frame for a suit-able structure, refer to table 4 for the lengths. The cables should notsag more than 50 mm.

CAUTION! DANGER OF DAMAGE!If the support structure fails and the plough scraper bumps into thereturn roller, this could cause severe damage to the ploughscraper, the return roller and the conveyor belt.The cables should never be installed between the plough scraperand the reversing drum; refer to the minimum measurements forthe position of the cable in table 4.Install safety cable.

4.3 Test run

1. Attach the precautionary labels for conveyor products (Part no. 23395) on the chute wall visible for the machine operator.

2. Remove all tools and fire protection covers from the installation area and conveyor belt.

3. Carry a one hour test run of the conveyor belt system. 4. After the test run for an hour, shut down the conveyor belt sys-

tem, switch off the power supply and secure it against being switched on again inadvertently.

5. Make sure that all securing parts are tightened. Tighten any loose connections.

6. Check the conveyor belt scraper for the following points:

• Wear and tear: a little wear and tear is normal, as soon asthe wiper blades have got adjusted to the contour of theconveyor belt, this stops happening.

• Material accumulation: No material should haveaccumulated between the cleaner blades and on the returnside.

7. If the wear and tear or bulk material accumulation is excessive or other problems occur refer to the information in section 4.4 chapter 6.

NOTERead through this section thoroughly before starting any work on the conveyor belt scraper or the customer's conveyor belt system.

4.4 Installation checklist

If the test run of the conveyor belt scraper was not as expected, thenthe “Installation checklist” table could help to find and solve the prob-lem. If there are still problems, refer to chapter 6 "Troubleshooting":

The shafts must be positioned according to table 3.

The plough scraper must be centred on the conveyor belt.

The scraper blade must lie flush against the conveyor belt.

5 Maintenance

5.1 Safety instructions

5.2 Monthly maintenance

1. Switch off the power supply of the conveyor belt and any otherequipment and secure them against being switched on inad-vertently.

2. Check that all securing parts are tightened. Tighten if neces-sary.

3. Check if the scraper blade still lies flush on the conveyor belt.

4. Check the scraper blade for wear. If it is worn almost to the sup-port bracket, replace as follows:

• Remove lock nuts and washers (7, Fig. 5), with which thesheet is attached to the support bracket.

• Remove the old scraper blade.

NOTEMaintenance inspections should take place at least once a month.Depending on operational conditions, shorter maintenance inter-vals may be necessary.

NOTERead this section thoroughly before beginning any work.

• Insert new scraper blade and fasten with lock nuts andwashers.

5. Check the safety cable for wear. Check if the cable is securelyattached to the supporting structure.

6. Clean all warning labels. Replace any warning labels that can-not be read. Warning labels can be obtained from Martin Engi-neering or an authorised dealer.

7. Remove all tools from the working area. 8. Switch on the conveyor belt.

9. Monitor the scraper and test its cleaning performance.

NOTEIf there are any signs of degrading operation, turn off the relevantpart of the conveyor belt system. To receive support, contact Mar-tin Engineering or a representative. DO NOT operate the conveyorbelt until the reason for the problem is known and a solution isfound.

6 Troubleshooting

6.1 Safety instructions

NOTEThe plough scraper is subject to many different types of bulk mate-rials and is often used in extreme working and environmental con-ditions.In case of problems, Martin Engineering or a representative canhelp with the positioning or with customised solutions. Use theconveyor belt system only after the fault has been identified andrectified.

7 Storage, De-installation, Disposal

7.1 Storage

To maintain optimal functionality, Martin Engineering recommendsstoring the cleaners and the cleaner replacement blades made ofurethane or with rubber components at room temperature and pro-tected from direct sunlight.

Depending on the type of urethane and the storage conditions, stor-age of between 6 and 12 months or longer under unfavourable con-ditions can degrade the functionality of the cleaner or cleanerblades.

The best conditions for storage are at a temperature of +0°C to+30°C and 60% relative humidity.

7.2 De-installation

De-installation is done in reverse sequence of the steps involved ininstallation (refer to section 4.2.2, page 18).

7.3 Disposal
