Ambient Temperature & Relative Humidity Measurement

Ambient Temperature

It is important to regularly measure the air inside the grain store if you are ventilating with Pile-Dry Pedestals, or the outside air if you are blowing air in from the outside using underfloor ducts. Measurements should be taken when fans are operating and at the beginning and end of each day when air temperatures can change quite rapidly.

Ambient Humidity

Knowing the humidity of the air that will be used for drying grain is essential to ensure that drying targets are reached as quickly and energy-efficiently as possible. Damp air will not increase grain moisture, but it will reduce the efficiency of drying systems if damp air is allowed to enter the grain bulk.

When?

Record crop temperatures weekly until the grain has cooled to 5°C (usually achievable by December); and then every two weeks thereafter.

Where?

Take one reading for every 100 tons stored 3 to 5 m deep. Use an imaginary 6m x 6m grid over the grain surface and take a reading in the centre of each grid square. This shows actual changes rather than location differences. In deeper grain, take readings using a 10m x 10m grid. If Pile-Dry Pedestals and Fans are used to ventilate grain, measure the temperature at the mid point between groups of 4 Pedestals since this is the last point to cool.

How deep?

Measure crop temperature within the top 1.5-2 m of grain depth. This is where any change in temperature will be seen.

Pitfall Insect Traps

Product Code: CQ/TRAP/PIT (box of 10)

Once the store is filled with grain, Pitfall Insect Traps can be used to detect the presence of insects. They are a ‘blunder’ trap designed to take a random sample that is representative of the whole store.

Pitfall Traps are used in pairs, with one at the surface and one placed approximately 8-15cm down into the grain. The traps should be placed approximately 5-6 metres apart.

The traps should be checked regularly as part of a crop assurance programme. Any insects found should be carefully identified and remedial action such as cooling or fumigation carried out as required.

Insects in stored crops can still breed at relatively low temperatures and moisture contents so, despite good storage conditions, it is important to be vigilant and monitor for their presence.

Correct identification of insects is important. It enables corrective action to be taken if they are likely to cause rejection or expensive fumigation costs. Equally, the insects may be harmless and no action may be required.

Insect trapping is an integral component of most crop assurance schemes.

Store preparation and

monitoring

Good store preparation and monitoring is the key to ensuring insect-free grain storage, whether the grain is to be held for a temporary period or for longer. Minimising the use of chemical pesticides to clean a store and to fumigate grain during storage must be the target from both an environmental and an economical point of view.

Insect traps Insect traps are ten times more effective than sampling at detecting insect and mites. They may also be the only effective method of detecting insects in grain bulks where use of spears is restricted. There are two types of trap: Pre-storage floor traps must detect any and all insects that are present in an empty store, so they use a harmless food lure to attract insects to them.

Pitfall and probe traps are ‘blunder’ traps that take a random sample of the presence of insects. They do not use a lure since that would give a false idea of the severity of an insect infestation.

Main Causes of Spoilage

The principal causes of spoilage in stored grain are fungi, insects and mites. The fungi and insects that are found in the field are different to those that cause problems in the storage environment. Insects and mites will thrive and breed in grain that is poorly ventilated, warm and damp. The grain trade does not tolerate the presence of insects so it is important to identify, monitor and control them. Even a single insect in a 1kg sample may represent potentially serious infestation.

THE IMPORTANCE

OF INSECT MONITORING

Trapping insects before the store is filled

After store cleaning, the presence of insects should be monitored by placing the Floor Traps in corners and at wall/floor junctions every 4-5 metres around the store. The traps can show where insects are and how serious the infestation is. Using Floor Traps can also demonstrate that a store is clear of insects and avoid the need for unnecessary spraying with chemicals.

Claydon Black Box Sampler

Product Code: CQ/SCBB

Automatically takes a 150g sample from every bucket.

Increased safety.

A practical alternative to spear sampling, with no loading delays.

HGCA tested (see box on left).

According to the HGCA, each year poor sampling and analysis costs the grain industry around £2.5 million. Failure to market the right specification of grain results in loss of quality premiums, additional haulage and administration charges. These costs have risen sharply compared to the grain price and can make the difference between profit and loss. The aim of taking a sample or series of samples is to give a fair representation of a batch or bulk to allow assessment of quality, value and storage potential. Representative samples, accurately analysed, form the basis of any sales campaign. Results allow grain to be segregated by quality and variety. Producers can match grain batches to the buyer’s specific needs.

Grain Sampling Spears

The HGCA recommends taking samples ideally using a modern, multi-aperture spear, at least 1.5m long, capable of being opened and closed by the operator. Such spears are emptied through a single orifice into a container.

Claydon Back Box Sampler

The HGCA has tested the Black Box Sampler and concluded that the samples collected are consistent and representative of the load for moisture content, hectolitre weight, protein/nitrogen and screenings. They also found that the sampler is easy to use and doesn’t delay loading or compromise operator safety.

Casella Crop Airflow Meter

Product Code: CQ/CASELLA/METER

The traditional method for measuring the flow of air blown up through a grain heap. Suited to under-floor systems and blowing fans, the meter is used to confirm that there is adequate flow of air emitting from the surface of the grain.

Ventilated grain ensures that the moisture content of the stored grain is kept within a safe limit by the steady flow of air through the grain. The Casella Crop Airflow Meter for grain is an essential instrument for the successful storage of grain in bulk where under-floor blowing systems are in use.

Grain Store Airflow Measurement

Specifications

Kestrel 1000 Readings are accurate to within +/-3% and are displayed on a 14mm high contrast LCD display. The Kestrel 1000 is powered by a 3 volt lithium battery (included), giving up to 400 hours use. Each anemometer is supplied with a protective case, lanyard and full instructions.

Kestrel 2000 No set-up or calibration is necessary, it is ready to use whenever you are. In addition to all the functions provided by Kestrel 1000, the 2000 is fitted with a precision quick-response thermistor. This enables temperature readings to be taken in °C or °F. Combining this with the wind speed reading allows wind chill to be calculated to within +/- 1°C.

Kestrel 3000 The 3000 is easy to use, and there is no need for complicated set up modes. The capacitive humidity sensor is factory calibrated to +/-3% and can be recalibrated in the field. Power is provided by a replaceable lithium coin cell battery, with typical 400 hours of operation. The Kestrel will switch off automatically, 20 minutes after the last key press.

Principle of operation

A lightweight float, made from a thin aluminium disc, moves up and down a tapered transparent tube.

A wire running through the centre holds the float in place. The float has been designed to spin, removing possible errors by reducing friction.

Air passing up the tube supports the float at a height where its weight is balanced by the pressure drop of the air.

A scale on one side gives the flow rate in both ft/min and m/min. On the opposite side of the tube is a white strip to aid reading the flow rate.

Hectolitre Measure

Hectolitre Measure Product Code: CQ/HTLR

This is a simple, easy-to-use kit that is very accurate if used precisely and consistently according to the instructions. Comprises measuring cylinder, funnel and digital weigh scale. Provides a good on-farm assessment prior to selling grain.

See how to use the Hectolitre Measure on our website.

A confusion of terms!

The concept of hectolitre weight can be confusing because of the words used to describe it. Grain is now bought and sold according to its hectolitre weight, measured in kilogrammes per hectolitre (Kg/hl). It was previously measured and sold in bushels per acre and called bushel weight. The confusion arises because many people still use the phrase ‘bushel weight’ when they are actually referring to hectolitre weight.

The Importance

of Measuring the Hectolitre

Weight of Grain The harvest of 2012 was one of the poorest on record, with yields 5-10% below the long-term average. Deterioration in the quality of grain was very clear as weights were well below normal levels. The normal specifications include a target of 76 kilogrammes per hectolitre(Kg/hl) in terms of specific weight, which is the weight per given volume. Readings were coming in as low as 50 kg/hl, which was quite a shock to growers who were hit with significant deductions at the point of sale. A year like 2012 has illustrated the importance of measuring specific weight on farm and knowing what the likely outcome of a sale will be. Various things can be done to raise the level of specific weight and it is much cheaper and simpler to do this before the grain is loaded and transported.
