DEALER BUSINESS SYSTEMI have been using the Dealer BusinessSystem (DBS) for the last few years. Iuse the DBS to process all of my dailyorders, pay monthly sales tax, file federaltax returns, pull sales reports, etc. I relyon this system 100%. One question Ipassed along about a year ago was, willthere be an upgrade to be able to use abar-code scanner within the DBS?Whenchecking out a customer there are a fewthings that need attention to allow the

check-out process to run more smoothly. Are there any updates coming out for theDBS? I like the idea of it, but it just needsto be more up to par for smooth sailing.NaTasha GreenwayAMSOIL: We’re glad to hear howvaluable the DBS is for running yourbusiness, NaTasha. We have no updatesscheduled for the DBS, but we haveshared your comments with the IT stafffor consideration when the time comes.

ZOOM MEETINGSA clear opportunity to network throughgovernmental stay-at-home directives isZoom. Can you embrace this technologyto help Dealers? Dealers willing to Zoomwith potential customers may have a“Z” added to their account number orsomething else obvious to others. An AMSOIL presentation on Zoom wouldbe a good learning experience. Zoomcurrently has a cost-free service so evennew Dealers could use it. Adding Zoomto the DBS package would be a greatupgrade in customer service.I have used this technology andrecommend it. It provides real-timecontact without the travel hassle tominimize our potential virus communityspread.Respectfully,Paul MarrsAMSOIL: This is a great suggestionfor other Dealers, Paul. While we haveused Zoom for a few things, we haveembraced Microsoft Teams corporatelyand use it daily to interact with oneanother. Teams also allows for contact-free interaction and it is free to usefor meetings with people outside ourbusiness organization.

Aside from encouraging you and otherDealers to use Zoom, Teams or othersimilar programs to facilitate meetingswhere appropriate, we have no plansor additional tools for Dealers on thistopic. While they are fairly new, theseare relatively common communicationtools used by many people in a varietyof settings. We view them the sameway we view other communicationtools, like email, phone or social media. All are valuable, and it is up to each

independent Dealer to determine howthese tools work best with his or herDealership. It is smart to take advantageof them where appropriate, and we arehappy to share this tip with others.

ATV/UTV OIL CHANGE KITSI have been asked by my powersportsaccounts if we have oil change kits forCan-Am* ATV/UTVs. I explain we havethe oil and filter, but we don’t have akit. Their response is customers aremore likely to pick up a kit than ask anassociate for the oil and filter. DoesAMSOIL have any plans for oil changekits for Can-Am ATV/UTVs?One account ordered one each of thePolaris* kits last week and sold the PK1and PK2 kits in a few days. Yesterdaythey ordered five PK1and three PK2 kitsto create a display focused on seasonalmaintenance prior to the start of huntingseason. They were hoping to also do adisplay for their Can-Am customers.Gale BinderAMSOIL: Thank you for your question,Gale. We’re happy to hear about thesuccess you and your accounts havehad with the Polaris ATV/UTV kits. Weagree that Can-Am ATV/UTV kits wouldbe a great addition, and we are currentlyexploring the possibilities. Stay tuned forupdates in the months ahead.

    Oil-life monitors keep improving,but they’re not perfect.What happens when your vehicle’s oil-life monitorcontradicts our oil-change recommendations?

Matt Erickson | DIRECTOR, TECHINCAL PRODUCT MANAGEMENT

Oil-life monitoring systems (OLMS)are standard on most vehicles today.Their prevalence the past several yearshas helped convince motorists to golonger between oil changes than theold 3,000-mile (4,800-km)standby,reducing waste oil and saving timeand money. Today, it’s common for anOLMS in a vehicle driven mostly undernormal service to recommend an oilchange after 10,000 miles (16,100 km)or more.

For all their benefits, these systems dohave shortcomings. For starters, theysometimes provide service intervalsthat contradict the recommendations ofsome of our oils. Their biggest short-coming, however, is what they don’t do.To get the details, let’s look at how anOLMS works.

Frankly, oil-lifemonitor is a poor de-scription for these systems. A bettername is oil-life estimator. They do notmonitor any direct physical or chem-ical property of oil; they only accumu-late data from the vehicle’s computerand predict how your driving habitsand operating conditions have affectedthe oil’s viscosity, total base number(a measure of remaining detergency),oxidation level and other factors.

Since the OLMS can’t measure thesekey properties like a chemist in a labwould measure them, how can it knowwhen the oil has, for example, only 10percent life remaining? It can’t. TheOLMS simply estimates oil life basedon an algorithm.

While first-generation oil-life monitorswere simple, mileage-based systemsthat prescribed fixed oil-change inter-vals regardless of operating conditions,

today’s systems are far more sophisti-cated. They monitor several conditionsknown to reduce oil life, enter thosevalues into an algorithm and returnthe oil-life percentage you see on yourvehicle’s display.

Towing, for example, can lead toincreased engine rpm, which stressesthe engine and the oil. If the vehicle’scomputer detects frequent high-rpmdriving, the OLMSwill shorten the oil-change interval. The same holds for ex-treme ambient heat, which can acceler-ate oxidation and chemical breakdownof the oil. Continually driving underheavy loads, like while towing, alsoshortens the drain interval, along withseveral other factors.

For example, Ford* says in a video onits website that drivers can expect itsIntelligent Oil-Life Monitor* to recom-mend oil changes about every 7,500-10,000 miles (12,100-16,100 km). But,if you do a lot of trailer-towing or idling, expect the system to recommendoil changes every 5,000-7,500 miles(8,000-12,100 km). Driving in extremetemperatures or frequently towingnear maximum capacity will lead tooil changes every 3,000-5,000 miles(4,800-8,000 km). Oil-life monitors fromother automakers typically follow thesame pattern.

But, what if I use AMSOIL SignatureSeries Synthetic Motor Oil, which isproven to neutralize acids, fight vis-cosity loss and resist volatility betterthan other oils, helping it last longer? How does the OLMS adjust its recom-mendations depending on oil quality? It can’t, which brings us to anotherkey point to remember about thesesystems. For all their benefits, your

OLMS cannot differentiate betweena high-quality synthetic oil and acheap conventional oil.

In these cases, your OLMS may rec-ommend an oil change in your heavy-use pickup after just 5,000 miles (8,000km) when you know perfectly well theSignature Series in the engine is goodfor another 10,000 severe-service miles(16,100 km) since we guarantee theoil for up to 15,000 miles (24,100 km)/one year in severe service. The sameprinciple holds for XL Synthetic MotorOil, which carries a maximum draininterval of up to 12,000 miles (19,300km)/one year.

Despite the sophistication of oil-lifemonitoring systems, they have draw-backs. You can rest assured, however, that our synthetic motor oils will deliverexcellent protection in your vehiclefor the drain interval we recommend, regardless of what the OLMS says. Ifyou elect to extend your drain interval, but your OLMS calls for an oil changebefore reaching the end of the oil'sguaranteed service life, simply resetthe OLMS and follow the guidelines weprovide on the product label. There’sno sense wasting good oil.

Maximizes mower lifeLandscapers are some of our best potentialcustomers. They’re under tremendouspressure to complete jobs on time andup to standards, which motivates them toseek products that help them keep theirequipment running at peak efficiency for aslong as possible, especially expensive zero-turn mowers.

However, continuous operation in hot, dirtyconditions can lead to deposits and wearthat reduce engine compression, robbing theengine of power. Over time, mowers becomeless efficient, require more maintenance andeventually wear out altogether.

Commercial-grade formulationMost small-engine oils we’ve tested, however, are nothing more than re-labeledautomotive oils, which are formulated withfuel economy in mind, not durability. Thatwon’t cut it. Compared to liquid-cooledautomotive engines, small engines runhotter; operate under constant load;generate more oil-damaging contaminants;suffer from neglected maintenance; and areexposed to dirt, rain and other extremes.Simply put, they’re far tougher on oil thanmost people think.

AMSOIL 15W-50 Synthetic Small EngineOil isn’t merely a re-badged automotive oil.Instead, we designed it from the ground upspecifically for small-engine dependability.Professionals can rest assured theirengines are protected even during periodsof extended use when there’s no time forscheduled maintenance. It’s built to solve

the problems that plague zero-turn-mowerengines, including wear, power loss, oilconsumption, harmful carbon deposits andstuck rings and valves. It helps landscapersand other professionals get more work doneand save money.

Reserve protectionSynthetic Small-Engine Oil is a long-life formulation that has repeatedlydemonstrated its ability to safely exceedoriginal equipment manufacturer (OEM)drain intervals in the toughest conditions.Extensive severe-service testing provesits ability to provide service life of up to200 hours or the OEM's longest drainrecommendation, whichever comes first. It provides an extra measure of protectionwhen equipment goes longer between oilchanges than is recommended by the OEM.

ApplicationsUse in small engines found in (not limitedto) mowers (zero-turn, riding, stand-on,push), generators, power washers and otherequipment that requires SAE50, 10W-50 or15W-50 motor oil.

Hisrésumé includes work on the ProjectMercury and Apollo space missions. “Idesigned the oxygen regulator for theLEM (lunar excursion module) vehicle,”said Gibb. “If you saw the movie ‘Apollo13,’ they went into the LEM vehicle tosurvive coming back to earth.” Gibb’swork also contributed to the February1962 Friendship 7 mission, during whichJohn Glenn became the first American toorbit earth.

Carpenter’s flight up in the airJust three months later, astronaut ScottCarpenter was set to duplicate Glenn’sfeat as part of the Mercury-Atlas 7mission. However, the spacecraft wasrunning out of liquid oxygen (LOX)propellant prior to reaching orbit. “Theywere going to postpone Carpenter’sflight because they didn’t know what todo,” said Gibb.

Porsche plays role in space raceOne of Gibb’s coworkers at GeneralDynamics, where he worked at the time, had the idea to change the LOXpressurevalves to solve the problem. “I was giventhe job to go make the change,” saidGibb. “So, I had two valves shippedfrom Cape Canaveral, Fla. to LAX (LosAngeles International Airport) and wentover and picked them up in the Porsche,”he said.

Gibb drove them to the supplier tocomplete the necessary work. “Then Itook them over to a big test facility out inthe desert,” said Gibb. They finished allthe testing at 10:30 p.m. on a Saturdaynight. Gibb then drove the valves backto LAX for the return flight to CapeCanaveral, where they were installedMonday in time for Carpenter’s pre-launch testing the next day.

The mission was a success, andRon Gibb’s Porsche was partly tothank.

Discovered AMSOIL in 1973Nearly 60 years later, Gibb’sprized car is still in excellentcondition thanks to AMSOILsynthetic motor oil. Gibb startedusing AMSOIL products in 1973after one of his co-workers atNorthrop Grumman, where hespent most of his career, becamean AMSOIL Dealer.

“I bought the oil and put it inthe car. A few weeks after I put it in,I couldn’t believe it,” said Gibb. Thedipstick, which had been nearly blackdue to deposits, was clean. “The dipstickwas nice, bright, shiny and just as cleanas a whistle,” said Gibb.

“They recommended changing oil every2,000 miles (3,220 km) because of thehigh temperatures of the air-cooledengine, and I did that for quite a while,”said Gibb. But when he drained AMSOILsynthetic motor oil, it was still clean. “So,I gradually shifted to going a year beforechanging oil.”

300,000 miles (482,800 km) andcountingToday, he uses Signature SeriesSynthetic Motor Oil in the Porsche, whichhe thinks has close to 300,000 miles(482,800 km) on it.

“My odometer stopped for quite a fewyears and I couldn’t find anyone to fix it,”he said. “I think I’ve got at least 300,000miles on it.”

Some of those many miles include tripsto Colorado’s Mt. Evans, which featuresthe highest paved road in the contiguousUnited States, and California’s DeathValley, the lowest point in the country.Gibb once drove his Porsche 31 straight

hours from a class reunion in Iowa backhome to Los Angeles – 1,900 miles(3,058 km). “It ran like a dream,” he said.

AMSOIL synthetic motor oil has deliveredflawless protection all these years. Theonly major engine work done was dueto a zealous parking-lot attendant at theairport back in 1976who couldn’t resisttaking Gibb’s Porsche for a spin.

“Someone at the parking lot took it ona joy ride and almost separated theflywheel from the crankshaft,” said Gibb. One new crankshaft later, the car wasback to normal, and it’s run smoothlyever since.

UsesAMSOIL products in everythingGibb has used AMSOIL products in allhis cars over the years, including twodifferent Corvettes* and a 1997 Toyota*Avalon* with a V-6 engine notoriousfor sludge issues. “I’ve never seen anysludge in the Avalon. [AMSOIL] has keptthat engine running excellent.” Gibb’snephew owns the car today, which has270,000 miles (434,500 km) on it.

It’s just one more reason he keeps usingAMSOIL products and telling othersabout their excellent performance. “I talkto them about it all the time – they oughtto try it,” said Gibb.

AMSOILHelps 1960 Porsche*Run Like a DreamOwning a pristine 1960 Porsche 356B is rare enough. But how about one that played a smallrole helping astronautScott Carpenter become the second American to orbit earth, in 1962?
