Yet this centuries-old practice is growing more popular in the West. Today, millions of people throughout the world, across all age groups, practise Tai Chi daily. A new school of Yang-style Tai Chi has opened in Pietermaritzburg under the supervision of Paul Dorrian. “Tai Chi is one of the most effective means of relieving stress,” says Dorrian. “Many other forms of exercises can dissipate your energy, while Tai Chi accumulates it, leaving the practi- tioner feeling energised.” Dorrian’s Tai Chi lineage could not be better. He studied under Master Dr Nico Snyman and Grandmaster Dr Lin Feng- Chao, himself a former student of the revered Professor Cheng Man-ch’ing, the person credited with bringing the Yang style to the West. Professor Cheng in turn studied under Yang Cheng-fu, the grandson of Yang Lu Chuan, who founded the Yang style. Dor- rian has also taken instruction in the United Kingdom. “The potential for improving one’s health is enormous,” he adds. “The slow, dance- like speed of Tai Chi creates balance, flexi- bility and calmness of mind.” Recent med- ical studies confirm that just 20 minutes a day of Tai Chi can improve one’s balance, as well as leg and lower body strength. It also increases flexibility, helps with alleviating the effects of arthritis, and aids in the recovery of a variety of ailments. Research has suggested that Tai Chi is extremely effective in slowing the ageing process, minimising the effects of diabetes and increasing the potential for preventing strokes. It improves one’s circulation, boosts the immune system and helps to increase focus and concentration. A study presented at the American Heart Association found that just 12 weeks of Tai Chi practice resulted in a significant drop in the blood pressure of older people.” It helps the body to heal itself, and can be practised by almost anyone regardless of ability, age, belief system or life circumstances,” says Dorrian. “Tai Chi has transformed my life,” he continues. “Being a management consul- tant is a stressful occupation. Tai Chi has brought a better sense of balance to my life. As a result, I am more productive and have improved my professional status. I can wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone in the corporate world.” Coming from a strong martial arts background, Dorrian makes the point that although his emphasis in teaching Tai Chi is on health, it should be remembered that Tai Chi also has a martial arts application. “Most people are stunned to learn that all of the graceful movements they witness in the Tai Chi form underpin a deceptive and devastating system of self-defence,” he adds. Tai Chi is also a great way to keep in shape. You don’t need special equipment. Just loose-fitting clothes and soft footwear. — Own correspondent. • Anyone interested in learning Tai Chi should contact Paul Dorrian at 033 386 2916 or 082 573 0557.
