Marti Janse van Rensburg: The art of selfawareness through the science of selfdiscovery Page 1 Marti Janse van Rensburg Leadership Development Marti’s background as a scientist has trained her to naturally look beyond the obvious. Her inclination is to question the norm and to encourage others to relook and unlearn their limiting beliefs and behaviours. As a result, her clients join her on a journey of thinking out of the box and reexamining paradigms. She is able to quickly cut through the noise to the real issues that need to be dealt with or resolved, saving her clients’ time and money by getting to what really matters. She sees depth and breadth, and has the ability to view the impact of actions within the broader system. This level of strategic ability is invaluable for those in a leadership position, ensuring that they examine all angles before making decisions and taking action. She passes on her ability to think, observe, process and analyse to others so that they develop the ability to operate at a higher cognitive level. Experience and Qualifications Leadership Development: Marti is currently on the executive education faculty for Henley Business School in South Africa where she averages feedback scores above 95%. She has designed and delivered numerous programmes at listed companies such as Discovery and Multichoice as well as at government departments such as Eskom (national power utility) and SARS (South African Revenue Services). Over the past decade,she has also designed a companywide training programme for Standard Bank for all their managers on how to give and receive feedback as well as a Performance Coaching Programme in conjunction with their Leadership Development team. She has more than 7000 hours of workshop facilitation and team coaching and in excess of 2000 coaching hours at senior management level. Coaching: She has coached on the Emerging Leaders Programme, a joint initiative of the Southern Africa United States Centre for Leadership and Public Values at the University of Cape Town and Duke University and coached the ALDP (Accelerated Leadership Programme) at Sasol on behalf of GIBS (Gordon Institute of Business Science). She has coached senior executives at companies worldwide such as Standard Bank, Sasol, Siemens, AngloGold Ashanti, Cargill and Tenova Bateman. Writing and Public Speaking: Marti’s coaching and leadership development career over the past 13 years has seen her do work with various local and international associates. She has worked across Africa and in the UK and is a contributing author of 4 books: Business Coaching: Wisdom and Practice and Business Coaching International, both by Sunny Stout Rostron; Team Coaching: Artists at Work edited by Helena Dolny and Managing Performance in Organisations, Human Capital Review Articles. She has also written and published numerous articles over the past decade and given talks on topics such as Intellectual Curiosity, Tolerance of Ambiguity, Leadership Lessons learnt from Elizabeth I, What can we learn form the Movies, Unlearning and Design Thinking. Background: Marti has a background that ranges from scientific research to fashion design and from teaching to corporate management. She has a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pretoria and an MBA from GIBS where she did her dissertation in coaching. She did research at the CSIR for 5 years before moving into the high fashion industry where she worked as a designer and owner of a training facility for designers. She was a contract teacher and consultant and spent 10 years in fashion retail, which gave her experience in conducting business in Asia. She was an SA Breweries divisional director before deciding to change career to coaching and leadership development. She has completed numerous qualifications related to coaching, people development, design thinking and neuroscience over the past 13 years. She is a founder director of COMENSA (Coaching and Mentoring Southern Africa), and a member of WABC (Worldwide Association of Business Coaches) who invited her to be on their Expert Certification Panel. In addition, she was invited in 2007 to join the GCC (Global Convention on Coaching) workgroup on Research in the field of coaching.
