Michelle Spohnheimer reflects on community leadership

Michelle Spohnheimer

What is your educationalbackground? I grew up in DownersGrove, Ill. where I graduatedfrom High School. That iswhen I came to Iowa. Igraduated from Iowa StateUniversity with a degree inCommunity and RegionalPlanning with a minor inHousing. What is your professionalbackground?

During college I workedfor the City of Ames in thePlanning and Housing De-partment for almost threeyears. I worked primarily withthe Section 8 Program dur-ing my time with Ames. In2001, I started with the Cityof Marshalltown as the Zon-ing Officer and in 2004 I be-came the Director for theHousing & Community De-velopment Department. How would you describeyour leadership style?

I believe it is important tolead by example. I believethat everyone is willing towork harder if managementis also working just as hard.It is also important to work

as a team building off of eachothers’ strengths. What kind of qualities doyou see in those you con-sider the best leaders?

Some of the best leadersI have worked with are “teamplayers.” If someone is a“team player” they are notjust looking out for their indi-vidual interest, they want ev-eryone to succeed in order toaccomplish a set goal. How do you encouragethose who work for/underyou?

I try to encourage my staffby keeping a positive attitudeand looking for ways we canall improve at our jobs andmeet the needs of our cus-tomers.What responsibilities, ifany, do you feel leadershave to the community atlarge?

Leadership in the Com-munity at large is very impor-tant, which is why I chose tojoin the Marshalltown Jay-cees. As a city employee, Ihave a lot of involvement incity activities but joining theJaycees allows me to get in-volved in the community inother ways. The Jaycees of-fer leadership and manage-ment training opportunitiesthrough project implementa-tion such as the recent can-didate forums held inMarshalltown.Should community leadersbe considered role mod-els? If so, why? Good community leadersoften have traits that makethem good role models as

well. At the same time thereare many people who may notbe considered communityleaders that are great rolemodels. What is the advantage ofvolunteering for projects, events, etc.?

I think that volunteeringhas many benfits. Volunteer-ing with community eventscan help improve our overallquality of life. On an indi-vidual level volunteering fora project or organization canhelp us improve leadership

skills. It also provides us withan opportunity to help some-one who may need assistancedoing something they are un-able to do themselves. What advice would youhave for young people whowant to grow into posi-tions of leadership?

I would encourage youngpeople interested in leader-ship positions to get involvedin the community. I believethat the Jaycees offer a num-ber of activities that can helpgrow leaders. We also have

many committees with thecity or other community or-ganizations that have volun-teer board members whoserve in a leadership role.Being involved in the commu-nity is the best way to becomea leader in the community.

What started as an ideato educate citizens on issuesimpacting our state, grew intoan event that partnered threeMarshalltown organizations.

In February and March, the Marshalltown Young Pro-fessionals (MYP),Marshalltown Jaycees andIowa Valley Leadership helda series of forums, invitingcandidates running for Gov-ernor of the state of Iowa toMarshalltown.

“The thought was that ifwhoever was elected Gover-nor remembered their time inMarshalltown and had somebackground in issues effect-ing us, it would eventually bebeneficial to us all,” said MikeMiller, a member of theMarshalltown Young Profes-sionals.

Miller, who’s idea it wasto host the forums, enrolledthe help of the three organi-zations, making the event a

true “community effort.”“I thought these three

groups would be excellenthosts for our series of forumsfor several reasons: it pro-vided a way for your peoplein our area to connect andnetwork; it allowed the groupsa way to promote their mes-sage and increase their vis-ibility and captured the atten-tion of the candidates,” Milleradded. “Additionally, by in-volving these three groups ofyoung leaders, it encouragesparticipation in the democraticprocess and allows youngpeople to be better educatedwhen they go out and vote.”

The Marshalltown Jay-cees and MYP jumped onboard with the idea andteamed up with Iowa ValleyLeadership to tackle the plan-ning and execution of the se-ries of forums which high-lighted Congressman JimNussle, Michael Blouin, Bob

Vander Platts, Chet Culverand Representative EdFallon. “The benefits of theMarshalltown Young Profes-sionals working with other lo-cal organizations are end-less,” commented BiancaGreazel, chair for the MYP’sProfessional Developmentcommittee.

“The Marshalltown Jay-cees were proud to co-spon-sor the series of candidateforums. getting your resume to be the onethat stands out on the employer’sdesk. Even if it is just a fresh pair ofeyes that catches a typo, it is one ofthe most valued Job Fair activities. If you are preparing for a new jobsearch and just pulled your resumeout of the mothballs, maybe you’llget a suggestion that will improveyour chances with a human resourceperson. Just bring along a preparedresume and stop by the critiquingtable. Those Job Fair attendees whoare truly serious about finding a jobshould dress the part.
