rs Dear Friends, This year has been another successful one for the organization and while the following pages may have a few snapshots on stories you have seen, there are also several new stories we are excited to share with you.

Recently, a total of $5.2 million in funds were secured for new conservation projects to conserve working farms. Awarded from the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, these projects will conserve roughly 1,900 acres of highly productive soils in the Genesee Valley across three farms in two counties.

We are also in the process of acquiring a new nature preserve in Wayland, one with trout stream headwaters that will protect important wildlife habitat and provide public hiking trails and educational opportunities. This will be our first project in the

Steuben County portion of the Genesee River watershed.

These accomplishments, and those detailed on the following pages, are thanks to the tremendous community support we receive throughout the year. Contributions of advice, time, and funds make our work possible. I extend a deeply grateful THANK YOU to everyone involved!

We are expanding our team in 2019 and as of this writing, have posted a Land Conservationist position. This staff will work alongside Dave Bojanowski on our farmland protection efforts as we continue to have high demand for our work.

A map of our service area (right), the Genesee River watershed (south of Monroe county), shows the pending projects (orange) that total 6,000 acres we will be conserving in the next 2-3 years; significantly growing the hundreds of currently protected properties in the region.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Gajewski, Executive Director

Eric Marshall Protects Family Farm in AvonThis year, the Conservancy was pleased to complete

a significant conservation project on Eric Marshall’s “Marshall Farm” in Avon, Livingston County.

This working farm has been in the Marshall family for three generations and over 100 years. That will change in the future, as Eric is the last of the Marshall line.

The conservation easement on this property will allow Eric to retain ownership, continue farming, and eventually sell or gift the land to whomever he chooses, but will ensure that residential, commercial, and industrial development do not cover the highly productive and important soils on the farm.

In 2015, the farm reached the 100 year milestone and was recognized by Livingston County as a century farm. That same year, Eric’s mother, still living in the family house, also turned 100.

Over the years the farm has produced a wide variety of products. Sheep, hogs, beef cattle, and dairy cows have been a part of the farm’s history. Today, the operation is primarily growing commodity crops along with a small herd of beef cattle. By conserving this land, Eric is helping ensure the economic productivity of this land remains available for future generations of farmers.

This project was supported by Livingston County, the Town of Avon, and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets’ Farmland Protection Implementation Grants program. GVC

Bluebells Delight Public

Hundreds gather for the annual day of hikes in the spring to see the bluebell flowers that grow on a privately owned property that has been conserved by the Conservancy.

With the landowners generosity, we share this beautiful project with the public each year to promote the 17,000 acres of private lands we have conserved. GVC

Signs Mark Protected Farms

A significant project this year was the installation of ‘Protected Farmland’ signs on working farms protected by the Conservancy that were accomplished in part through public funding.

These farms have taken a significant step to ensuring the future economic viability of the region for working farms and they deserve public recognition. GVC

National Oak Tree Research Continues

Professors and student research assistants spent the summer visiting dozens of conserved lands to conduct forest sampling as part of their research on the history of the open grown oak trees of the Genesee Valley.

Tree identification, soil sampling, and tree coring were techniques used at each site. GVC

Biology of Insects Class at Preserve

All year long, students from SUNY Geneseo visit Conservancy protected properties as part of their regular class and lab work.

Students from the new course Biology of Insects visit the preserve with board member Dr. Apple to find and identify the insects that depend on this land. GVC

Native Planting at Nature Preserves

The F.O.R.C.E.S. club at SUNY Geneseo took part in many volunteer workdays this year. At Indian Fort Nature Preserve, the Conservancy continues to remove invasive species and plant a variety of native species that will create a more beneficial habitat for wildlife in the future. GVC

Memorial Trees Planted

Two dozen trees were planted along public roads this year as part of an effort to improve the communities of the Genesee Valley.

Street trees have many benefits: they define the street, slow speeds, provide wind and snow breaks, create wildlife habitat, and provide shade to keep homes cool and reduce energy use. GVC

True Family to Conserve Farmland in Perry and CastileFarmland protection efforts in Wyoming County took

a significant step forward this year as the True Family began a project to permanetly conserve their working farm with conservation easements that will allow for continued farm uses, but prevent residential, commercial, and industrial development that would cover the soils and prevent the land from being part of the economic productivity of the region. This project joins the Silver Meadows and Old Acres farms, also currently in process.

The project is supported by the Town of Perry, Wyoming County and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and the Farmland Protection Implementation Grants program. GVC

“We believe that a conservation easement is an excellent tool to allow our business to carry out our mission of being a provider of nutritious food

for people and taking great care of the land we are blessed to have.”

Community Art Project “Genesee Valley 100” On ViewA total of 110 original paintings are on display from the

Genesee Valley 100 community painting project.Last year, Ben Gajewski and Jim Mott were discussing

methods to engage the public in thinking about the important landscapes of the Genesee Valley. The result of that conversation is this one-of-a-kind art project.

Through their paintings, community artists provided the Conservancy with a display of what scenes, resources, and views of the valley were important to them. This can help inform our future conservation.

The Conservancy is flipping those paintings back to the community, viewable online and in person, to engage the larger community in these beautiful scenes. Ideally, the show will cause people to think about the land and scenes they see everyday and may take for granted.

This project was made possible by Steuben Trust Company and with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts. GVC

The participating artists were given a preview of the show before it opened to the public for viewing. It is hoped this show will help engage the broader community in thinking about the importance of our local lands.

Livingston County Historical Society Museum Prepares for Return of Big Tree Artifact

The section of the Big Tree held by the Livingston County Museum weighs in at over 3,500 pounds. It is seven feet wide and stands five feet tall. It is one of the biggest artifacts held by the County Museum. While it may appear to be the base of the tree given its size, it was actually a section of trunk further off the ground.

The tree currently resides with the conservator B.R. Howard and Associates in Pennsylvania where they have finished work to rid the wood of insects, cured the wood to prevent future degradation, and have prepared the item for viewing at the museum.

The museum has spent the summer preparing the space: re-arranging other collections, painting walls, shoring up the floor to support the weight of the tree, and designing the space and displays that will help visitors interpret this artifact. The exhibit, like tree rings, will include multilayers of history from ancient geology to modern day study of the mighty oaks of the Genesee Valley and connections to the Seneca people.

Last year, the Conservancy helped contribute $4,000 dollars from cash reserves and a special appeal to our supporters to preserve this significant relic of the past. The tree is expected to be on view in 2019. GVC A concept drawing put together to envision how space in the

museum can be used for exhibits related to the Big Tree artifact. Lauren Becker
