The 2016 AAO UPDATE for MBKU|SCCO

Dear Colleagues,

With Academy 2016 being in Anaheim this year, SCCO was well represented at all levels including presentations of lectures, posters, and papers as well as committee and volunteer work. This year’s newsletter will again highlight all the hard work of our faculty, residents, students, and alumni. A well-deserved thank you to our incredible library staff for compiling all of this year’s data!

Recognition is due to our thirty one new Academy fellows. This major accomplishment is a testimony to their hard work and dedication to the profession. Please make sure to read this section of the newsletter and if you happen to know one of the new fellows, make sure to congratulate them on their achievement. Our students also did a great job of representing SCCO. We had an incredible seventy one students achieve student fellowship status with the Academy. Congratulations to our new student fellows!

We were also fortunate enough to have three of our faculty members be honored for their achievements in teaching and clinical practice. Dr. Tim Edrington was the recipient of the Michael G. Harris Award for Excellence in Optometric Education. Dr. Elaine Chen was honored with the George W. Mertz Contact Lens Resident award and Dr. Jason Ng received the Innovation in Education Grant from the American Optometric Foundation and Johnson and Johnson.

The 2016 AAO UPDATE for MBKU|SCCO

Forty-seven SCCO at MBKU residents from health care settings such as the VA, Indian Health Service, Managed Care, Private Practice, and our very own Ketchum Health

convened at the Anaheim Convention Center for the 5 day Annual American Academy meeting. For some residents, this was their very first attendance at the Academy meeting and it was apparent that they took advantage of all that the meeting had to offer in academics, industry products, and networking opportunities.

Dr. Tong, residency coordinators, and the residents loyally promoted SCCO at MBKU affiliated residency programs at the Student Network Luncheon to hundreds of hopeful residency candidates from all colleges, schools, and universities of optometry. The residents with their personal testimonials of their respective programs were undeniably the most effective group in promoting our coveted residency programs.

Our graduates and residents were also very engaged at the Academy during the Residents Day Paper and Poster Presentations. Please make sure to read the section on our residents and their paper and poster presentations.
