QUiCK FaCtSTigers vs. Marshall

This is the 18th meeting between Memphis and Marshall. The Thundering Herd leads the all-time series, 12-5, including a two-game winning streak over Memphis. Both of those wins have come in Huntington, W. Va., a place where Memphis sports a 2-6 overall record. Memphis is 3-4 against Mar-shall in games played in Memphis, but that includes a three-game home winning streak. This will be the Thundering Herd’s first visit to Memphis under new coach Matt Daniel, a name pos-sibly familiar to Mid-Southerners as he coached at Central Arkansas from 2009-2012, where he was a two-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year and guided the Sugar Bears to three straight 21-win seasons and two postseason tournament berths. Daniel, a graduate of Harding University, also has made career coaching stops at Missouri, Colorado and at Texas-Arlington.

About Marshall Marshall gained its new head coach on May 29th of 2012, so the team has spent a big part of the season getting familiar with a new head coach who didn’t recruit them to Huntington. Going from the offensive system run by Royce Chadwick to Daniel’s more open offense was an early season chal-lenge for the Thundering Herd, but the team is finding a green light from three-point range opens things up around the floor. The Thundering Herd put it all together in their first meeting with the Tigers, when they connected on 10 three-point field goals and held on for a 55-54 victory over Memphis that snapped an eight-game Marshall losing streak. That win was the first of three-straight in the Cam Henderson Center for the Thundering Herd, a winning streak snapped by Southern Miss last Thursday. That loss was the center part of a three-game losing streak that Marshall is carrying into Thursday night’s regular season finale. Shay Weaver led Marshall with 12 points, all from three-point range, in the first meeting with Mem-phis, while five other members of the Thundering Herd connected from three-point range in the win. Weaver leads Marshall in scoring with 9.3 ppg, and has 66 triples on the season, ranking 78th in the country. As a team, Marshall ranks 73rd in the country with 5.9 field goals a game from three-point range, and uses discipline on defense to keep their opponents off the free-throw line. Marshall ranks 27th in the country in fouls per game (13.6), giving their opponents just 14 tries a game from the stripe.

In the Loss at East Carolina - Ariel Hearn had just one assist, but it was her 100th of the season, making her the first Memphis freshman since 1982-83 to hand out 100 or more assists in a season. She also becomes the fourth consecutive Memphis guard to hit the 100 assist mark in a season (2009-10: LaToya Bullard; 2010-11: Alex Winchell; 2011-12 Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir; and 2012-13 Ariel Hearn). - Memphis scored just five first half field goals; the 17 first half points scored for Memphis in the first half was the lowest of the season for the Tigers. - The Tigers were out-rebounded 45-39 in the game; that was the sixth time in eight games Mem-phis has been out-rebounded against a C-USA foe. - Freshman forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey was 6-for-10 from the free throw line, giving her 90 free throw attempts on the season. The 90 tries from the line puts her among the top 10 in the freshman single season record book. Fellow freshman Ariel Hearn is second with 134 tries from the line, and Fuqua-Bey’s 90 attempts ties her for ninth. She needs nine more made free throws to break into the freshman top 10 at Memphis (currently at 48). - Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir had her double-digit scoring streak snapped at five games. The five-game streak is the longest of her career, but she was just 2-for-11 from the floor (18.2 percent) in the loss on Sunday. She also had a season-high seven turnovers, which puts her upside down with 53 assists against 65 turnovers on the season. - Jamila Ajanaku made her sixth start of the season in place of Ariel Hearn. With Thursday night’s game against Marshall being the Tigers’ Senior Night, Ajanaku will likely make her seventh career start Thursday night. Ajanaku is just nine rebounds away from 100 for the season. - After going 8-for-13 from the field in the wins over Southern Miss and UTEP, junior post Pa’Sonna Hope has gone 0-for-2 from the field in the games last week at Tulsa and ECU. She did not attempt a shot at ECU, just the second time this season she has been held without an attempt from the field. - Asianna Fuqua-Bey posted her seventh double-digit scoring game of the season, finishing with 12 points on 3-for-6 shooting from the floor and 6-for-10 shooting from the free throw line. - Jaymie Jackson returned to the lineup in the win over UTEP. In the next two games, she has worked her way to the free throw line, where she has gone 4-for-6 over the last two games. - Nicole Dickson scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half; giving her 13 straight games with double digit points. She has scored double-digit points in every C-USA game except the one televised game against Southern Miss in which she was in first half foul trouble, and scored back-to-back 20 point games the previous week. She just missed a third 20 point game in the last four games, finishing with 19 points on 8-for-22 shooting in the loss at ECU. - Memphis was held under 60 points for the first time since the loss at Marshall back on Feb. 3rd and for just the second time this Conference USA season.

Conference USA Standings A Tangle From Fifth to Ninth The folks at Conference USA will have a busy night on Friday. The top four teams in the league standings receive a first round bye for the Conference USA Championships that begin Wednesday in Tulsa. Right now, UAB holds the fourth seed with an 8-7 mark in league play. The Blazers host UCF Thursday, and a Blazer win means they clinch the No. 4 seed, and the final first round bye, in the draw. A UCF win makes things interesting, with as many as five different teams capable of being knotted at 8-8 in the league standings. The Tigers only way to get into that mix is to win tonight’s game against Marshall. Four of the teams in that possible tie are playing one another tonight (or in the case of Tulane at UTEP, Friday night). No one will know for sure who they play until late Friday night, after Tulane tips off at UTEP at 8 p.m. CT.

Hearn Caps Century Mark Freshman guard Ariel Hearn had just one assist in the loss at East Carolina on Sunday, but it was enough to get her to the 100 assist mark for the season. She is just the second Tiger freshman in school history to make it to the 100 assist mark. Ruth Ann Forsythe was the last Tiger freshman to hit the triple digit assist mark, posting 101 assists during the 1983-84 season.

Road Wins in League Play & The 10 C-USA Wins Mark Memphis finished the regular season with a winning record in Conference USA road games for the first time under Melissa McFerrin. The Tigers were 6-2 on the road in conference games with wins at Southern Miss, at UAB, at East Carolina, at SMU, at UCF and at Rice. Road Wins ...................................................... Dickson and Hearn Sweep C-USA Honors for a Third Time Nicole Dickson and Ariel Hearn swept the Conference USA weekly honors for a third time this season. Dickson earned her fourth C-USA Player of the Week award for averaging a double-double of 24.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in a pair of wins while shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 46.7 percent from three-point range. She had a season-best 16 rebounds in the overtime win at Southern Miss, and scored 20 first half points in the win over UTEP. Hearn earned her third C-USA Freshman of the Week honor after averaging 16.0 points, 7.5 re-bounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. She also shot 50 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from three-point range. This is the third time this season that the duo has won both awards in the same week. They also won both awards on Dec. 31st and Jan. 7th. Dickson additionally won the player of the week award on November 19th. Dickson becomes the first player in school history to earn a C-USA Player of the Week Award for a fourth time. Tamika Whitmore won the award three times in 1997-98 and 1998-99, but never won it four times. Hearn becomes the first Tiger freshman to earn the freshman of the week honor three times. Ann Jones won it twice last season and Nicole Dickson won it once in her freshman campaign.

Abdul-Qaadir Passes Two Benchmarks Junior guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir passed a pair of benchmarks in the win over UTEP. Her career-best 19 points pushed her over 600 for her collegiate career at Memphis and her five assists gave her 200 career helpers. She also set a season and career-best, scoring double-digit points for a fourth straight game. That marks the first time in 85 career games that the Springfield, Mass., native has scored double-digit points in four straight games.

Dickson Ties Ellis’ Block Mark Senior Nicole Dickson had four blocks last week, two in each win. That gave the senior 26 blocks for the season, tying Savannah Ellis for fourth in the Tigers’ senior single season record book. For her Memphis career, Dickson has 59 career blocks, which ranks the player more known for her scoring in the league, for sixth all-time in the Memphis record book.

That’s Foul The Tigers are 6-10 when they give their opponents 20 or more attempts from the free-throw line, including a mark of 2-6 in league play.

Dickson Moves to 10th in Career Scoring Nicole Dickson has moved into the career top 10 at Memphis in scoring with 1,625 career points. That puts her squarely at 10th all-time, but she would have some work to do to move up any higher though. Kitty Allen is in ninth place with 1,823 points, 198 points away from where Dickson now sits.

Dickson Just Misses Third Consecutive Double-Double The Tiger coaching staff asked the team to focus on rebounding in the game against Southern Miss, and senior co-captain Nicole Dickson led the way, posting a double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds. That was Dickson’s sixth double-digit rebounding effort of the season an her sixth double-double this year. She now has 16 career double-doubles, ninth in school history, and needs one more to move to a tie for sixth in double-doubles, where Ashley Thornton, Diane Gary and Linda Street currently sit with 17 double-doubles.

Memphis double-doublesNicole Dickson, 30 pts, 13 reb. at UT Arlington, 11/21/12Nicole Dickson, 10 pts, 10 reb. vs. UALR, 12/7/12Nicole Dickson, 20 pts, 10 reb. vs. UCF, 1/27/13Nicole Dickson, 18 pts, 12 reb. vs. Rice, 1/31/13Nicole Dickson, 19 pts, 10 reb. at UCF, 2/10/13Nicole Dickson, 22 pts, 16 reb. at Southern Miss, 2/21/13Asianna Fuqua-Bey, 14 pts, 11 reb., Southern Miss, 1/13/13Ariel Hearn, 23 pts, 10 reb., Tennessee Tech, 12/31/12Pa’Sonna Hope, 13 pts, 12 reb., at East Tennessee State, 11/30/12

Keep it Down The Tigers’ goals are obvious. Since league play began, Memphis is 1-5 when giving up 70 or more points and is 3-1 when holding their conference foes in the 50s. Memphis has scored 60 or more points in 12 of 14 league games. con’t on page 4

2012-13 MEMPHIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTESuNIvErSITy Of MEMPHIS

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basket-ball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s mod-ern history.

McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent the previous four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors.

Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minne-

sota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten champion-ship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin re-cruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationally-ranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.
