ECO MATES
It was with great excitement that 14 ECO Mates travelled to the Randwick Council Nursery on Monday to choose plants for our gardens. Our mayor, Cr Noel D'Souza kindly gave us a grant of $300 to use at the nursery and we spent over an hour listening to Natalie the hor-ticulturalist about the different plants on offer. Next Monday, weather permitting, our planting will begin. If anyone has a spare spade they no longer need, we would greatly ap-preciate it. A big thank you to Ms Pierce, Ms Cignetti and Ms Ho for helping to transport the children to the nursery and of course to the children for their enthusiasm and passion to beautify our school.
Special Visitors On Tuesday we were privileged to have Ms Shannon Johnstone visit us from Canada. Ms
Johnstone is the principal of a K-8 school comprising of 75 students. She was so impressed
with all the wonderful programs that are happening here at MJPS as well as the warm and
friendly school community members. On Friday we will have 5 new visiting teachers from
Tokyo, Japan. They will be visiting each Friday for the next 4 weeks, so please say hello if
you see them in the playground.
2018 Enrolments Do you have a child who turns five years of age before 31 July 2018 and will be ready to
start school? We encourage all families with children starting school next year to contact
the office as soon as possible to complete the enrolment paperwork. Please also spread
the word to other local families interested in enrolling at our school that now is the time to
work through this process.
Have a lovely weekend

MJPS Learning Powers
This term, we will continue to explicitly teach the MJPS Learning Powers to promote the use of a shared language for learning across our school community. Our current focus is the Learning Power CREATE. Learning awards will be given to students who can create through generating new ideas. This is a skill which is essential for Futures Learning.
A LEARNER WHO CREATES-: Can create based on their experiences
Is open to new ideas and can demonstrate this by: brainstorming, hypothesising and thinking “outside the box”
Explores different viewpoints
Is flexible and adaptable
Makes learning connections
Looks at familiar things with a fresh mind
Challenges ideas and generates alternative solutions
Learns from mistakes
Uses their imagination to explore new possibilities
Identifies and solves problems
Takes risks in their learning
Is confident in their viewpoint
A learner who creates says -:
How can I display my thinking?
Is there another way to solve
this problem?
Let’s collect some different
ideas.
I learnt from that mistake….
but I won’t give up. I am going
to try and solve it another
way.
Let’s try it this way and see
what happens...
Guess what???
I have a great idea!
This is going to be a
challenge….Let’s collect all of
our ideas together. I am learning through trial and
error...

writer. She is known for the Nanny Pig-

mainly in children’s animation, but she has also
had extensive experience writing jokes, sketch
comedy and political satire.
About Katrina McKevley
I was a primary school teacher for 10 years in
Newcastle and on the Central Coast. I always knew
I wanted to be a teacher (since preschool). I en-
joyed every day and loved every child I had the
privilege of teaching. Teaching was exactly like I
thought it would be…so rewarding!
In 2005, it was time to be a mummy, a full-time one!
Soaking up every single milestone of my two
children in their early years was a blessing. After
being a full-time mummy for 5 years, I decided to
mix my love of teaching with my love of being a
mum. A new children’s author was born!

On Tuesday 25 July M.J.P.S participated in the annual Year 5 & 6 Randwick Rugby Club Gala Day held
at Latham Park.
This year we were able to field 2 teams across two different divisions.
The boys demonstrated great sportsmanship, worked collaborative with their teammates and were
wonderful representatives of the school.
The Year 5 team did an outstanding job finishing runners up in division 3.
The Year 6 team went one better and were the eventual champions of division 2.
A fantastic effort considering only one student is a regular participant in rugby union.

NAIDOC DAY 2017
On Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th July, we celebrated NAIDOC Day. Both days were sunny and
relaxed, students were excited and eager to take part. For most of the students, one of the many
highlights of the day was the Koomurri dancers, whose energetic and vibrant performances were
thoroughly enjoyable. The day started with an Acknowledgment to Country, done by Maggie from
2G, she did a great job and became a superstar within the Koomurri group.
The morning continued with a smoking ceremony and some Aboriginal song and
dance. While teachers of Maroubra Junction PS and parents were noticeably
thrilled to be the first invited to participate in a dance performance, it was fan-
tastic to see the students of Maroubra Junction PS eager to engage with the
Aboriginal culture.
Throughout the day students and teachers were given the opportunity to learn
about Aboriginal artefacts, weaponry and bush survival. We participated in
Aboriginal song and dance, learnt how to throw a boomerang and got to be part
of a didgeridoo show, which produced some ‘deadly’ sounds. During the day you
could feel such a positive vibe and there were some great discussions to be had as
students and teachers were immersed in the workshops and gaining so much
insight into Aboriginal culture. Another highlight was the whole school
involvement in the creation of two incredible art pieces on
canvas during our art workshop on Tuesday. These will be displayed in a
prominent position in the school, for the whole community to enjoy. Our 2016
creation is on display outside the school’s office as you enter. Finally, the day
concluded with a farewell concert of Aboriginal song and dance, the students
had an opportunity to join in and have a final dance. A huge thank you to the
teachers and students of MJPS for their participation, curiosity and openness to learn new things.
Thank you for such a great day!
