IN THE SUMMER OF 1967 the local ‘North Coast’ Surf Clubs were all-male, and destined to be so until women members were admitted to the movement, which we called ‘The Association’, in 1980.

As we know, in 1967 our Region adopted the name, ‘The Sunshine Coast’, to replace the rather boring and uninspiring sobriquet ‘North Coast’.

In late 1967, some Senior members of Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club agreed to form a group for young people - young boys - to learn the skills of lifesaving. They called the new group the ‘Cygnets’.

The ‘Cygnets’ began their activities at the start of the Christmas School Holidays of 1967. 21 children attended the first-ever ‘sign-on day’.

One of the first ‘Cygnets’ was Brett Williamson, then aged 12. He and older brother Kirk were too young to be lifesavers, but that Christmas they were taught resuscitation and how to retrieve a patient from the water. Brett later served as CEO of Surf Lifesaving Queensland and then CEO of Surf Life Saving Australia. Kirk served as Maroochydore Club Secretary in the late 1970s. Kirk and Brett are both still active in Maroochydore SLSC, 50 years later.

‘The Official History of Queensland Surf Lifesaving’, published in 1970, acknowledged the Maroochydore ‘Cygnets’ as the first Nipper Club in Queensland, almost 2 years before the Queensland Nipper Association was formed.

The admission of women and girls as Nippers and then patrolling Lifesavers has been the single most significant decision in the 100- year history of our great humanitarian endeavor.

The newly-formed Maroochydore ‘Cygnets’ were invited to march in the 1968 Queensland Surf Championships March Past, held at Kirra Beach on the Gold Coast. This display was recognition of the formation of the first Nipper Club in the modern era in Queensland.

Other Nipper Clubs began to form in other parts of Queensland during the 1968-69 summer Season. The Queensland Junior (‘Nipper’) Association was founded in the 1969-70 summer Season as a direct consequence of the formation of the Nipper Clubs.

In these 50 years, 15 former Maroochydore Nippers became World Champions for Maroochydore SLSC in International Surf Life Saving competition.

In these 50 years, 105 of our 211 Australian Championship Gold Medalists were Maroochydore ‘Cygnets’.

Our most famous former Nipper is Clint Robinson OAM, 1992

Olympic Champion and holder of Olympic Gold, Silver and Bronze medals from 5 Olympics, 1992-2008. What other Nipper Club could claim an Olympic Champion in their numbers?

Most importantly of all, over our 50 years, many hundreds of Maroochydore Nippers have learned to save a life, commit to our Lifesaving ideal of volunteer Service, and become good citizens.

Apart from the local hero, Clint Robinson OAM, Olympic Champion, a Nipper from 1980 to 1986, a future Champion joined the Nippers at Maroochydore much earlier, in about 1974.

Mal Meninga, Australian Rugby League Captain and later Coach, won the Bronze Medal in the Under 13 Queensland Nipper Beach Sprint for Maroochydore at the 1974 Queensland Nipper Championships held in Mackay. Who knew? And how good were the boys that went Silver and Gold against ‘Big’ (Little) Mal? And who are they?

In Surf Sports, the ‘Cygnets’ have been Champion Nipper Club of Queensland on eight occasions:

    1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 2012, 2015 and 2016.

Take a bow all Nipper Mums and Dads and Coaches through the decades.

Take a bow, all Queensland Nippers, born at Maroochydore 50 years ago.

It gives me great pleasure to present the Annual Report for the 2017-2018 season; a season in which we are proud to celebrate 50 years of Nippers here at Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club. In this, our 102nd year, our members have once again upheld our Club traditions of community service, resulting in a loss of zero lives between the flags.

One of the major highlights of the year is our competitive team’s results at the Aussie Titles which were held on Scarborough Beach, WA. Our athletes made club history, bringing the U17 Australian Championship crown to Maroochydore SLSC for the first time. Such an achievement is the result of remarkable dedication. The combination of training commitments, patrol obligations, work and studies makes for a formidable work-load. It’s a big ask, but one that our athletes take on willingly to compete in their chosen sport of lifesaving.

The Club rejoices in the successes of our competitors at each carnival, and we Thank You for giving your time to represent Maroochydore as inspiringly as you have this past season.

The recognition for these results, however, does not belong solely to our outstanding athletes. We must also congratulate both our coaching staff, headed by Nathan Grieg, and every other Member without whom our programs would not be possible.

The Club’s success extends further than the Australian titles, with Maroochydore competitors achieving fantastic results in a number of carnivals throughout the year; three of which were held right here on Maroochydore Beach. As per tradition, we as a Club hosted the Murphy Builders and Rebel Sports (formerly A-Mart) Carnivals during the year, as well as putting our hand-up to host the State Titles. None of these events would have been possible without our Volunteer Workforce. To all whom took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer in assistance of these events, I thank-you.

Moving away from the beach, there is a great number of people whom have sacrificed their valuable time throughout the year to ensure we as a Club can continue to achieve our fantastic results within the competitive realm, as well as provide the high standard of community service for which we are known.

To our dedicated Shimoda team, thank-you. The Maroochydore SLSC and the Shimoda LSC Exchange Program has enjoyed yet another great season. The life experience gained by our members whom get to participate in this cultural exchange is invaluable and I am happy to say that we will be sending 6 of our members again this coming season. The organisation required to maintain the success of this program is immense and to those members involved, I again offer my thanks.

Our Surf Girl, Nicki Chapman. Nicki has put her heart and soul into running as our Surf Girl this season with numerous events raising not only the profile of our Club, but contributing greatly towards the funds needed by our

    Lifesaving and Surf Sports Programs.

Our Grants Officer, Kim Musgrove, has continued his tireless work for yet another year resulting in a number of grants for the Club; the biggest of which from Fiona Simson (State Member) for a brand-new tractor. Thanks Kim for all your hard work throughout the year.

I’d also like to make special mention of our Director of Surf Life Saving, Ollie Hoelscher, who stepped up from the Deputy position with enthusiasm. Ollie, you and the Board of Surf Life Saving (along with all Patrolling Members) have done a great job to once again keep the beaches safe and promote our Club to the public.

This achievement is made possible by our Members whom have worked hard over the past 12 months, continuing to work with our trainers and assessors in the pursuit of furthering their surf-skills education. This process would not be possible without the efforts of our Volunteer Club Trainers and Assessors. To all of you, I offer my thanks for your assistance in ensuring the continued maintenance of our patrolling member’s proficiency.

To all Board and Committee Members, the Club would not run without your tireless work behind the scenes. To be a member of any Board is both time consuming and challenging, however also deeply rewarding. Being able to assist in the steering of our fantastic organisation is something I personally view as a privilege and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all members to pursue this line of engagement with our great club.

To our General Manager, Jack Orr, and the Life Saving Admin Staff, I thank-you all for another great season working together to support the volunteers; it has made it so much easier having the help of a committed team.To the Board Members of the Maroochy Supporters Club, Jack and his team as well as our loyal patrons; I say thank-you. Your combined efforts ensure that Maroochy Supporters Club remains the biggest sponsor of Maroochydore SLSC every year.On the notion of sponsorship, I’d like to personally thank all of our sponsors with a special mention to Matt Murray

and his team at the Cricks Sunshine Coast for their support throughout the year.

Without the support of our sponsors, we would not be able to continue our work on the beach and within the community.

As the season finishes I am proud to say that no lives were lost between the flags on Maroochydore and we kept up our 103-year-old tradition. I would like to thank all our Volunteer Patrolling Members for a great season.

    See you on the beach

    Life MemberAlan Vidler

On 12 June 1985 Al Vidler joined Maroochydore from Currumbin Vikings SLSC, where he had been an Active Member since gaining his Bronze there in 1970.

Al holds 31 SLSA Awards in Lifesaving skills.

It quickly became obvious that Al was not only a valuable Patrolling Member. He brought great ski and board paddling skills to our Club. Although Masters competition did not achieve Australian Championships status until 1993, Alan was an enthusiastic contributor in our early ‘KFC Masters’ carnivals held at Maroochydore from 1985.

At the first ‘All States Masters’ (non-championship) held on the Gold Coast in 1989 Al was part of a team of club legends who were runners up in the national Pointscore: John Rigby, Ian Jobson, Len Harris, Gordon Jeffery, Kerry Taylor, Peter Molineux, Mal Pratt and Alan Vidler.

In 1996 and 1997 Seasons Al was involved with Nippers as a Manager and Member of the Board of Junior Activities, making a valuable contribution in coaching, managing and surf safety.

Al has had a long association with our Sister Club Shimoda of Japan, dating from his first trip there in 2000. He was Liaison Officer for the Shimoda Exchange from 2014 to 2016, presenting a welcoming face and representing our Club with distinction. He was accorded the honour of being appointed Liaison Officer to the Japan National Team for the 2015 ‘International Surf Rescue Challenge’ held on Maroochydore Beach in September 2015. As always he did an excellent job.

Al and his wife Ingrid have opened their family home on countless occasions to travelling Lifesavers. Thank you Ingrid for your unwavering support for Alan’s distinguished career in Surf Lifesaving.

Al served as a Member of the Board of Lifesaving 2001-2007 and as Clubhouse Director for several seasons in the same period.

Then came a lengthy period as a Member of the Board of Surf Sports 2008-2012 as Master’s Liaison Officer.

He was awarded the Alex Devlin Memorial Trophy for ‘Most Outstanding Masters Competitor’ in 2004 after a Gold-Silver-Bronze haul at Aussies in 2004. He also won an Aussies Masters Single Ski Championship in 2006 and was a podium finisher in Ski and Board disciplines at many Aussies Masters.

After 15 seasons at Currumbin and 32 Seasons at Maroochydore Al Vidler is a proud lifesaver who has given exceptional and sustained service. He is worthy of election as Maroochydore’s 82nd Life Member.

    Life MemberTim Ryan

Tim Ryan joined Maroochydore SLSC on 23 November 1997, gaining his Bronze Medallion on 13 December 1998.

Tim holds 48 SLSA Awards for Lifesaving skills.

Tim served a number of seasons as Patrol Vice Captain between 1998 and 2005.

Apart from his impressive career as a Patrolling Member, Tim surfaced as Deputy Chairman of Junior Activities in the 2001 and 2002 seasons, where he also served as Team Manager.

In 2002 Tim was a member of the ‘Most Efficient Patrol’, winning the Terry Lane Memorial Trophy. In the same year he was awarded the ‘Bronze Certificate of Recognition’ in the ‘International Year of the Volunteer’.

In 2003 Tim ran for the ‘Bronze’ again, this time in the Branch Masters 170 years Beach Relay - mercifully without sustaining one of those nasty leg injuries that ‘old guys’ get when they run in beach relays.

In 2005 Tim was awarded the Brian Davey Shield for ‘Best Senior Club Person’.

Tim was our Branch-appointed Club Supervisor 2006-2009, after which he was Deputy President to Mike Dwyer for two seasons before being elected to the Presidency.

Incidentally, Tim holds an award for bravery as a result of his heroic attempt to save a young child who was swept into a flooded suburban drain. He is also co-founder of the Morcombe Foundation and a major participant currently in CrimeStoppers. His community involvements are many.

Tim was elected President of Maroochydore SLSC in June 2010. To be a President of our great Club is an honour in itself, but what Tim did with that opportunity is what marks him out as a worthy Life Member:

Firstly, as President of the Supporters Club, Tim maintained its positive trajectory.

Secondly, in October 2010 Tim formed a unique 3-Club consortium of bidders to win back the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships for the Sunshine Coast after an absence of 37 years. The event in 2016 would mark the Centenary of our Club and of Surf Life Saving on the Sunshine Coast. With the prospect of again hosting the Aussies in 2021, this will go down as Tim’s enduring legacy. Tim is Chair of the 2021 Aussies bid.

Thirdly, as the Surf Club President, Tim enhanced our Club’s reputation in our community as a rescue-ready organisation, primed to help out in times of natural disaster. In January 2011 Tim led a contingent of 120 Club and Community

Members to a clean-up in Ipswich after the massive floods. Three busloads of volunteers worked in 37 degree heat to restore homes and to restore hope. Local State MPs Fiona Simpson and Peter Wellington were in the group. This was typical of Tim’s community focus.

Fourthly, Tim’s leadership at the time of the death of Matty Barclay on 28 March 2012 will be remembered as an outstanding feat of leadership. With no ‘rule book’ to guide him for such tragedies, Tim led from the front, from the moment the news broke to the day of Matty’s funeral and beyond.

Tim served four years as President, standing down in June 2014. His involvement from that time was as a significant figure in our 2016 Aussies and now looking forward to ‘getting the nod’ for 2021. Tim enjoys the respect of the other two host clubs and of SLSA President Graham Ford and his Team - so he is playing an important role for our Club going into the future.

Tim’s wife Sally was a staunch ally during those dark days and throughout Tim’s journey in Surf Life Saving.

Tim left his mark on our Surf Club and is a worthy candidate for election as our 83rd Life Member.

    Life MemberGary Wilkie

Gary Wilkie joined Maroochydore SLSC on 10 August 2000 and gained his Bronze Medallion on 8 October 2000.

He is one of our most highly-qualified Lifesavers, having gained a staggering 78 SLSA Awards for Lifesaving skills over the past 17 years. He is a Level 2 Trainer and Assessor and a Level 2 Surf Sports Official.

Gary is held in awe and respect throughout the official channels of Australian, Queensland and Sunshine Coast Associations.

Gary is also one of our most awarded lifesavers:2001 - Terry Lane Memorial - Most Efficient Patrol2002 - Brian Davey Shield - Best Senior Club Person2003 - Terry Lane Memorial Trophy - Most Efficient Patrol (as Captain)2004 - Gary had a slack year, no prizes!2005 - Tony Cruice Shield - Most Outstanding Male Member2006 - Jeanette Buckham Trophy - Best Patrol Captain2008 - Tony Cruice Shield2009 - Tony Cruice Shield2010 - Another slack year, pull your socks up Gary!2011- JFH ‘Fred’ Murray Memorial Trophy - Best Masters Club Person.

Gary was selected to visit Shimoda in 2002 and has remained a strong supporter of our Sister Club relationship.

Gary contributed many seasons as a fine Patrol Captain and gained his 10 year Patrol Award in 2010.

From 2010 to 2015 Gary was Branch IRB Surf Sports Officer. He made a memorable contribution all the way to Aussies level, becoming a trusted and valuable member of SLSA’s ‘Aussies’ team. He and Todd Sweeney played a crucial IRB role in the 2010 Saxon Bird tragedy at Aussies.

Gary took time out to actually get in the water and in 2003 won Gold in the Branch 130 year Surf Teams - say what??!?

In August 2014, Gary, together with current President Steve Wieland and brand-new Bronzo Justin Fay, received an Award of Excellence from Surf Life Saving Queensland for their life-and-death rescue of several patients on Christmas Day 2013. Gary was our IRB driver on that day. The entire team prevented major drownings on our beach by their vigilance and their skill.

Gary is still vitally involved in our Club, serving on the Board of Surf Sports in the 2015-2017 seasons and the Board of Surf Lifesaving 2012-2017. He has also continued as a Surf Sports Official.

Gary’s wife Tina has been an enormous support to her husband’s outstanding career in Surf Life Saving.

Gary Wilkie is an eminently qualified candidate for election as Maroochydore’s 84th Life Member.

Board of Administrationand Membership ReportNarelle Souter, Director

Another season has closed, and the Club celebrates the contributions and achievements of its membership in this Annual Report. Maroochydore SLSC is a vibrant, diverse organisation which offers to its volunteer Members many opportunities to develop personally, competitively and professionally. For the 2017-2018 season the Club’s membership comprised:

    Junior Activity (5-13yrs) 286Associate 188Probationary 0Cadets (13-15yrs) 63Active (15-18yrs) 43Active (18yrs+) 173Award 45Reserve Active 2Long Service 105Past Active 2Life Members 62Leave/Restricted 2Gym 44Honorary Vice Presidents 140

Trendlines indicate that Cadet, Active 15-18 years and Active 18+ Memberships have improved in the last 4 years. Award Memberships nearly doubled this season from 24 to 45; primarily due to an increase of Radio Officers. Reserve Active and Past Active Membership has remained steady, though Long Service Membership increased by 20 Members. The number of Members eligible to patrol has grown from 265 to 324 since the 2016-2017 season to end of 2017-2018 season.

Junior Activities Membership increased by 23 in the 2017-2018 season. However, Associate Membership (parents) decreased by 64, down from 252 last year to 186 at April 2018.

The current Board of Administration sat down in 2014 and set a 3 to 5-year program of activities aimed to better recognise our members, offer opportunity and inclusivity to all members no matter what their chosen pursuit at the Club, improve retention and strengthen links with other Club sections. Big ask!

The Board invited Visitors to come along regularly and give their input on their section; plus help us get the many items on our wish list up and running. I’m pleased to say we’ve ticked off a few and had some positive results. Again, regular Youth events were held with good Youth attendance, participation of our Youth at Branch, SLSQ and SLSA camps and development programs increased and 2 Youth attained YEP Gold Status and 1 attained Silver Status - a great effort.

As well as sending 10 Junior Activity Members to Camp Commando, the Club endorsed 4 Youth to attend the 2018 Breaka Camp and gave Ben Colston the opportunity to represent Maroochydore at the inaugural Branch EduK8 Program. EduK8 offers young members accelerated training in key awards over 1 season. Ben’s report on page 12 supports that he was able to achieve a lot in a short time and made some great friends at other clubs.

Two new Club-based programs have been launched. With the help of the BOSS members Toni Pettigrew [U15-17 Liaison Officer] and Nikki Chapman, and with the support of the Board of Junior Activities the Cadet Mentor Program was initiated. The Program aims to form a network which supports our younger members as they transition from JA up into Cadet and Active Lifesaver roles. It is another example of Youth leading Youth. Positive feedback about the Cadet Program came from all involved. Next season it is planned to add activities to the Program to broaden the work carried out by the Cadet Mentor network and have the Mentors give extra support to Age Managers.

The second Program introduced seeks to advance participation in Surf Rescue Championship events. It will send selected competitors to Cairns to experience lifesaving in the Tropical North and learn more about marine envenomation and its treatment. The first trip is planned for July / August 2018.

I would like to acknowledge the dedication of Ben Ellwood to his role of Youth Development Officer for the last 3 years. Ben is stepping down and Jonty Dodson has agreed to take on the role. The Board will be re-nominating, so they can support Jonty in his first season.

My sincerest thanks to all BoAM Officers and Visitors who have helped this season. You all do a magnificent job for the Club. Special mention to Kirk Williamson, who has spent many hours gathering the data to support Member Recognition nominations and Service Awards.

Behind the scene improvements to how the Club provides its member services are being identified and implemented. In the last month the Club’s telephone system has been replaced, the Reception cash register upgrade to enable Reception Staff to receipt common Club Members purchases [clothing, membership fees, club events, purchase training books] at any time. Planning has started to replace the Gym FOB system, and key access to the Sixth Avenue side gate, Training Room and Storage Area with the same FOB system used in the Surf Club areas. Redevelopment of the Club website is on the agenda for 2018-2019 season; a long overdue project.

Capturing the highlights of each season as reported in the Annual Report is a considerable task consuming many hours of work. Collecting photos starts at season beginning, and then the adding the content and reports fast-tracks after Aussies end. Many thanks to every Club Member who contributed a report as it gives a unique insight into their area of club activity. Special thanks to Jodie, Lauren and Chelsea who coordinate getting all photos and content together in a format ready for the printers. Each year the Report gets easier to pull together and it’s a credit to all involved.

The Club did not nominate to be part of this year’s SLSQ annual collection week. The decision was based on falling participation by our members and the increased demands placed on a few members to organise and run the week. Certainly, the Club wants to do the collection later this year and Expressions of Interest for a Coordinator will be called for at the AGM. If you have an interest, then put your hand up.

The tradition of our Club’s Junior Captains laying a wreath at the RSL’s Cotton Tree Park ANZAC Day Celebrations continues. Jacob Bristow and Matilda Jarrott joined the official parties and capably represented our club. Parents of our Junior Captains often tell me that the occasion is a moving and thought-provoking morning for their children, and it is a special experience for them to be part of it.

Member feedback on the draft Constitution was sought in February this year. I very much thank those Members who made the effort to respond and give their views. Submissions were studied and responded to. Where possible the feedback received has been included in the Constitution. Items which require Council approve have been put on an Agenda for further discussion. The final touches to the draft are being done now, and it is expected the document will be presented to Council in June/July for final comment. Following that a Special Meeting will be called to seek Council endorsement. My thanks to Glynn Topfer who has worked with me over the last season to get the Constitution ready for presentation.

I would like to thank every single person who gives their time to make Maroochydore a remarkable club; inclusive of the Board of Management and all Office Bearers, our Summer Surf Girl entrant, Age Managers, Officials, Trainers, Assessors, Patrol Members, Coaches, Competitors, Water Safety parents, Shimoda Exchange team, Canteen helpers and Social Organisers as well as paid Lifesaving and Supporters Club staff for your dedication to the Black Swan over the last 12 months. You do your Club proud.

    Eduk8 Program - Ben Colston

The Sunshine Coast Branch ran the inaugural Eduk8 Program during this season and I was lucky enough to take part. The program gave me the opportunity to complete a number of qualifications/awards with a group of lifesavers from other Branch Clubs plus the opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at life saving operations. The program included my First Aid Certificate, Advanced Resus Certification, Age Manager Certification and was to include my IRC Crew Award but as happens when you take part in something weather dependant, it was unfortunately cancelled. Adding to my skill set was a great opportunity and I look forward to the opportunity to using my new skills. The best part however was meeting other likeminded young lifesavers from other clubs. I would sincerely like to thank the Club for the opportunity to take part and would encourage any applicable club members to take part in the future.

The Youth Program (YEP) supported by the Club and at SLS Branch and State Levels provides our Youth Members with the opportunities to develop their Surf Lifesaving, Leadership and Social Skills.

The Clubs YEP Program this season has successfully hosted monthly Club activities and events for our Members, including a day at the Aqua Fun Park, and movie nights. Participation at YEP events feed into a ‘surf cred’ reward system and credits were accrued for attendance at Patrols, Training and Personal Development Programs.

A big congratulation this season to Kalani and Kiara Kliese, and Morgan Williams who have made tremendous efforts towards their Surf Lifesaving Development.

Other Youth Programs hosted by Branch during the season like Camp Commando also continue to be popular with our

Club’s Youth Members. At the Eduk8 Training Course this season Ben Colston gained several awards over the period of the year with a group of youth who participated from other Clubs.

A new program supported this year was the Pulse Advanced Lifesaving Program that was held on our beach and at our Club facilities. Aaron Penfold and Cody Surawski participated in the three-day seminar/training program designed to push our everyday Lifesavers that little bit further in the crisis management area.

Thank you to all of the Club’s Youth Members who represented us at these external events. I have thoroughly enjoyed three years now as the Youth Development Officer and I could not have done it without the support of the BOMA or our fantastic Youth Members, thank you all for the opportunity.

We had another great year of stretching and strengthening at our Wednesday late afternoon classes. The group has become based around a strong loyal bunch who just can’t get enough. In fact, they even have another go most Saturday mornings with Andy Walpole.

The participants are mostly mature age Club Members who still love being part of the club, and enjoy this session that includes stretching, mobility, balance and strength – all the things we need! The class caters for all abilities and manages to work around aches and pains and injuries. We love also having the Surf Sports athletes join us when they are either injured or just need some low-key activities.

It is often quite surprising how well our 50’s plus members blow the kids away in the “planks”. A strong core and good balance are the hallmarks of every discipline and I encourage all Club Members to come and join us.

Group sizes are mostly 8-10 unless Andy bumps it up with International couch surfers – who bring some interesting stories! Mostly we are upstairs or in the park as weather permits.

All Members are welcome to come and join us! Stretch class is the envy of many other clubs and individuals.

Where else do clubs provide an experienced Physio that run multifactorial exercise class overlooking our beautiful beach at no cost to members, you are crazy if you’re not involved!

One of the main focuses of the Foundation for the season was to ensure our nominated fundraiser for the year would generate sufficient funds to cover the costs of the growing number of beneficiaries now benefiting from the Foundation.

The inaugural Murray & Associates sponsored the Mal Pratt Youth Development Foundation of Maroochydore SLSC Annual Mid Year Golf Day, held during August 2017 was an outstanding success. The event lived up to the pre-event hype as another of the Club’s “must attend” community events on the Sunshine Coast and raised valuable funds for the Foundation.

A big thank you to Club Marketing Manager Jodie Crowther for her support in bringing the day together, to Foundation committee member Nick Clatworthy for his huge contribution in attracting a full field of Event and Hole Sponsors for the day, along with the support of additional committee member Peter Aiken and club stalwart Peter Dun, in ensuring the ‘feature holes’ were also a big success on the day. It was nice also to have the old master Michael Rogan back ‘on stage’ doing his thing with raffles and presentations on the day.

Foundation benefactor Mal Pratt generously matched our profits on the day with a donation to the Foundation’s Principal Holding, which will obviously assist the Foundation moving forward.

Eleven interested potential Foundation beneficiaries referred by The Smith Family, attended the information Afternoon Tea in early August, and by the commencement of season 2017/2018 we had nine new beneficiaries undertaking swim training. As the season progressed, those numbers have dwindled down to six new beneficiaries who have committed to on going swim training with a view to joining the Maroochydore SLSC Junior Activities Program in Season 2018/2019.

An additional six Club Members from previous seasons continued with their involvement during the season, and two of those numbers obtained their Bronze Medallion and commenced as Patrolling Members after a number of seasons of swim training and involvement with the Junior Activities Program. Many thanks to the Age Managers/Coaches etc from Junior Activities, along with Chief Training Officer – Brad Kildey for your support and encouragement of the young club members along their journey.

The Foundation continues to provide valuable support for the disadvantaged youth of the community, who in turn are now giving back to the community through their involvement as Patrolling Members of Maroochydore SLSC.

It is my privilege as General Manager of Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club to deliver this report in relation to the operational goings-on which have taken place over the past 12 months.

To preface, it must be recognised that the Sunshine Coast can be described as one of the most competitive hospitality environments within Australia. With the continued expansion of the Ocean Street precinct, a high concentration of licenced venues and the recent re-development of the Mooloolaba Wharf area; patrons are spoilt for choice more than ever. Couple this ultra-competitive environment with the regions inherent dependence on tourism-trends, and the challenges imposed upon local clubs such as ours become clear.

It is the presence of these challenges that re-enforce the fact that, to remain competitive, areas of operational weakness must be identified, corrected and the resultant positive change embraced.

This is a concept that our committee members have been extremely mindful of which has, as a result, allowed for a year filled with system upgrades and positive procedural change.

Please find below a summarised listing of some of our Club’s achievements from the 2017/2018 period.

    • The selection and implementation of a new all-encompassing HR management system; Timetarget. The purpose of this system was to move away from manual, labour intensive processes in favour of an independent, digital solution featuring;

o Accurate, independent time tracking completed through a digital finger-scanning system.

o The abolishment of paper timesheets, therefore limiting the possibility of human error.

o Streamlining of payroll procedures via eliminating the necessity of manual data entry.

o In-depth reporting capabilities in relation to labour forecasting as a result of Timetarget’s ability to integrate with our POS system.

    • After having the ‘COMMANDER’ phone system for well over a decade, we have now completed the conversion to an NBN-based VOIP system. This new phone system allows us a variety of features including;

o The ability to have a ‘virtual receptionist’ (“Press 1 for Lifesaving, Press 2 for… etc”)

o Missed call tracking and message bank capabilities.

o Portable handsets within the club.o Standardised call forwarding and holding

    procedures.o Future-proofing against Tesltra copper-line

    reduction.

    • Focusing on the concept of improving our customer integration, we sourced and implemented the ‘Max-e Draw’ system which, in combination with ‘Maxconnect’, has allowed us to reach a new level of targeted marketing.

o This system allows us to create targeted advertising campaigns based on any number of behavioural or demographic data points.

    • In collaboration with UBET, we have completed a re-fit of the main-bar and UBET component of the venue which has brought us in-line with industry standards.

    • Early in the 2017/2018 season we were successful in the procurement of a new courtesy vehicle, therefore allowing the expansion of our courtesy-service radius to include high density residential areas such as Bli Bli and Parklakes.

    • With the invaluable assistance of our Grants Officer, Kim Musgrove, the club has also been successful in the procurement of locker facilities which will be available to members in the coming season as well as a tractor to assist with beach tasks.

    • Throughout the later part of the season the supporters club sponsored an extensive amount of work to be completed on the dorms and senior bathrooms area. Upgrades include;

o The installation of extraction fans into both bathrooms.

o Extensive re-plastering and painting throughout the area.

o Replacement of the existing aged air-conditioning units.

o Replacement of the mattresses and bedding within both dorms

    • It is imperative that any management group remains aware of community perception and how it deviates from that which is desired by the organisation. In our case, we’re a community club; an all-inclusive, family-friendly venue. The maintenance of this organization-profile is an ongoing task which resulted in a number of actions throughout the season including;

o The relaxing of a number of dress-code policies (singlets, rubber thongs etc).

o The introduction of ‘table service’ into our restaurant.

o The re-development of our ‘Kids Room’. This shifted the focus of the area onto ‘free to play’ games which led to the introduction of our ‘Gamezone’ bank (4 playstations), wall-mounted tablet devices and a seated arcade machine all of which can be utilized free of charge.

In summary, it’s been a big year for Maroochydore Surf Club. The early results of our changes have already fruited recognition as evidenced by our recent results at the 2018 Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence which draws upon clubs of all forms (Surf Clubs, RSL, Leagues Clubs etc) across the entire state.

    • Best Gaming Venue – Onsite inspection score of 100%• Best Dining (Largest category in the competition) – 5th

Overall• Best Surf Life Saving Supporters Club – 3rd Overall• Best Young Manager of the Year – 2nd Overall

To close, I’d like to take this opportunity to recognise a number of key contributors without whom the Maroochydore Surf Club would not be possible.

Firstly, our Committee Members, Life Members and Life Governors. The hard work put in by these dedicated members is remarkable and surely not made any easier by a new General Manager with a seemingly never-ending wishlist of upgrades and renovations!

Second, the fantastic staff whom have maintained an open outlook and positive attitude throughout a time of high-volatility within the business. Their hard-work, support and willingness to embrace change has been a testament to the professionalism of our team.

Third, our Sponsors. Without the generous contributions of our Sponsors, we as a club would not be in a position to maintain the high standard of vital work performed both on the beach and in our community.

Last but certainly not least, our Members; both Active and Social. Without the Volunteer efforts by the members of this club and our Supporters on level one, the Maroochydore Surf Club would not be what it is today.

Once again, thank-you to everyone for a fantastic year; here’s to another great season.

  • 16

Well the season is at a close for Maroochydore and the 2017-18 season has yet again proven itself a busy one with 25 rescues performed, 2413v preventative actions and a total of 12360 hours given by Maroochydore Members on our beach!

I came into this role quite hastily at the start of the year due to unforeseen leave affecting Scott Steele. I’d like to recognise the hard work Scott had put into this role. Many of the changes implemented by Scott have continued on past his time as Director such as all-day patrols, this has formed a strong part of his legacy.

This role has not been without its difficulties, and I would like to thank the Board of Lifesaving for their support. Nikki Chapman - Deputy Director, Steve Ellwood – Life Member, Peter Lucas – Ordinary Member, Brad Kildey Chief Training Officer, Drew Moles - IRB Captain, Phil Lyons - First Aid Officer, Graham Davies – Radio Officer, Jason Childs – Health and Safety and Mike Dwyer as Club Supervisor. All of the crew were happy to give above what was required in an effort to improve the quality of lifesaving services delivered on our beach this season.

Nikki Chapman saw a need and was happy to step into the role mid-season as Deputy and has continued to lead the first aid provision conducted on Ocean Street. For most of these nights it is fairly manageable, however it is known ambulance transfers have occurred from our work down there and effective management of critical patients was recorded by our members. I’d like to pay a special thanks to those who have generously gone above to offer their services on Ocean Street.

I would like to pay a special recognition to Phil Lyons who is now in his tenth season as Maroochydore’s First Aid Officer. Phil has always had the gear operational and in top working order. Phil often leads the team of first aid personnel across the carnivals at Maroochydore. This role is crucial in our lifesaving mission and we recognise Phil for his contribution.

The BOLS and I have made an effort to host some additional courses targeted to skill, like Silver Medallion Patrol Captain Awards. IRB training is still something that we are struggling with but continue to work with Branch in an attempt to facilitate further courses.

A major thanks must go to those who lead the teams on the weekend – Maroochydore’s Patrol Captains. Our PC’s make a special effort to lead our teams in what can only be described as sketchy situations at times. To all the Volunteer Members, THANK YOU! for attending your patrols and striving towards preserving life in our bathing reserve.

Thanks to those who have supported and those who have contributed to making stronger patrols. Enjoy your off season, and I’ll see you in the summer!

Board of Surf Lifesaving ReportOliver Hoelscher, Director

Season 2017-18 is now behind us, another successful year on our beach with zero lives lost between the flags. Well done to all the IRB Drivers and Crewies for being an integral part of keeping Maroochydore Beach fatality free this season. Moving forward for the 2018-19 season I would like this to increase and see more of our patrolling members gaining these awards.

Our biggest challenge in the past season was meeting IRB Crew and Driver requirements and this remains my greatest concern for season 2018-19. We, as a club have been communicating this concern with Sunshine Coast Branch and hope to work closely with them to gain a positive outcome.

It actually is a lot of fun on patrol in an IRB roving up and down our beaches being in the “duck”! Helping out at carnivals on IRB Water Safety can also be rewarding and a great way to meet people from other clubs. Give it a thought and sign up for the next IRBC or SMIRBD Course.

I would like to thank the Maroochydore SLSC Administration for their support. In particular I would like to thank Oliver Hoelscher for his support during the season and stepping up to the position of Director of Lifesaving at short notice. Ollie you are a legend and you have been absolutely fantastic in this position.

With the completion of another busy season, we’ve again introduced many fresh faces to our club as well as another large group of U14’s upskilling to become SRC Patrolling Members. We have completed the usual 3 Bronze courses for the season, the September holiday SRC squad and Narelle Souter also ran a holiday SRC to Bronze upgrade course for our Cadet Members. We also hosted and outsourced several Emergency Care courses. There have been many new awards issued during the season, a combination of new members to the club and existing members upgrading and furthering their life saving skills. As a trainer and/or assessor, it’s always extremely rewarding to see people you have trained putting their skills to work on our beaches and in everyday life. I applaud everyone who can give up their time to donate such an integral skill to our community. After much pushing again from our Sunshine Coast Branch CTO’s, we have started to see professionally published training material issued by SLSQ for our SRC, IRB & Emergency Care courses with material for the Bronze Medallion and other courses filtering through during next season. The ease of use and professional approach this material has provided is certainly a welcome step and our support at SLSQ need to be commended for this. With the 2018/19 season fast approaching, as always, planning and scheduling has begun on several areas including the Trainers, Assessors and Facilitators Proficiency, Junior Awards and potential new courses that may be offered to our members, and as always, planning for our numerous Club Skills

Maintenance days of which I would love to say that they are always a favourite! With the completion of my 5th year in this role, I am always grateful to our Trainers, Assessors, Water Safety and Club Administration Staff who have contributed their time and expertise throughout the season, you are the gateway to our Volunteer Surf Life Savers and Surf Sports competitors.

    Gear Steward’s ReportNoel Furmage

Firstly, thanks to Noel Furmage for his stewardship of the Radio Operators and equipment over the past seasons. I would also like to thank Noel for his assistance in the handover to myself as Radio Officer, and for his ongoing assistance since...it has been invaluable! The equipment is working well, and thanks to all the Operators who make sure the radios are maintained at the end of the Patrols each day. This will ensure that the radios will last. The LIMSOC iPad has been working well, with all Operators confident with its use. During the off-season, the tower has had a few upgrades with new, lighter shutters installed (much easier to raise and lower) and the windows had their rollers replaced. These improvements are greatly appreciated. This season we lost a couple of long-serving operators. John Rankin (22 years), and Tracy Reeves (12 years). Noel

has since visited John and presented him with a Certificate for his service. We have welcomed some new Operators this season as well. Bryce Whittaker and Dave Whittaker (Patrol 1), and Wes Wright (Patrol 3). Amber Baker and Uwe Sinn completed their Radio Awards during the off-season and have started working in the tower this season. Both Amber and Meryl Todd have also joined Surfcom as operators. The sign for Volunteer Radio Operators in the window is working, and we have had three enquiries for Radio Operators in the last few weeks, unfortunately it has been too late in the season for them to start. We have a great team in the Tower and as the new Radio Officer, I would like to thank everyone for their efforts this season. Thanks also to Ollie and the Board of Lifesaving for their support.

I took over the role of Gear Steward in October 2017, after Michelle Burnett had accepted a permanent position at Sunshine Beach Surf Club and I would like to sincerely thank Michelle for leaving the gear in such good condition, which has made my job relatively easy. Both the Red and Yellow ATV’s had a problem with jerky take off’s, so my first task was to work on getting those rectified. Sunstate Motor Cycles of Maroochydore found the drive belts on both machines were excessively worn and had teeth missing which was causing the problem. Two new drive belts were fitted and both machines are now functioning particularly well with hopefully a number of seasons left on both of them. Our ATV’s are not really designed to be pulling heavy Arena’s and Surf Boats up and down the soft sand, and this has contributed to the excessive wear on the drive belts. I am very pleased to learn that the Club is purchasing a new Kubota Tractor for this purpose and that will certainly ease the pressure on the small machines. I would like to thank Kim Musgrove and our local MP Fiona Simpson for obtaining

the grant and making the purchase of this valuable asset a reality.Other projects undertaken during this 2017-18 season included; fitting of new struts to the arena, purchasing an aluminum carry-all that drops over an IRB trailer, re-carpeting the IRB trailer skids to protect the IRB’s, and replacing the foam protection on the rescue board racks on each of the beach towers.I would like to thank all patrolling members for their support, and for taking such great care of our extensive range of equipment. A particular mention must go to David Shearer a Nipper parent who has volunteered to undertake running repairs to our Rescue Boards and has restored a number of boards back to the former glory. Thank you David.I would like to also thank Drew Moles, whose knowledge and guidance has been invaluable in supporting me on this learning curve. Lauren and Chelsea in the office for their support during the season, and Ollie Hoelscher and the entire Board of Lifesaving, thanks for your support during the year.

The Athol Nixon Memorial Trophy (Radio Operator of the Year)

After some deliberation and consultation with Noel, the Athol Nixon Memorial Trophy has been awarded to Meryl Todd. Meryl has attended all allocated patrols, and has stepped in to help on other occasions and taken on an extra role with Surfcom as an operator. Congratulations to Meryl and thanks for your effort this season.

I’d like to acknowledge the diligence in maintaining the First Aid equipment throughout the season and I encourage all Members to keep up the good work.

As we all know, taking care of and the checking of our resuscitation equipment prior to commencing your patrol ensures that when a life-threatening emergency occurs, we are prepared to provide the best possible chance of a patient’s survival.

A big thank you must go to all the Volunteers who helped out in First Aid at the Murphy Homes, and Junior Carnivals; they all were a great success, and this was largely due to the volunteers who gave up their time to assist, you do a great service to our Club.

Our beach was one of the venues for the QLD State Surf Lifesaving Titles in March. Over the three days First Aid Volunteers were provided from a number of Clubs. Our Club was required to provide two Volunteers for two days, Amanda and Dale Massie put their hands up for both days, my thanks to you both.

In closing, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Board of Life Saving members, for their dedication and support, also a big thanks to our Administration Staff.

I wish you all a safe and happy off-season and look forward to seeing you on the beach.

Wow, another season cooked and cleaned and what a season it was in the Kiosk.

There was lots of hard work, fun, laughter (not too many tears and tantrums) and plenty of willing Volunteers when the call out were made.

For that I say a “massive thank you” to all who volunteered their time this season (too many to mention), without the volunteers we would have had no Kiosk service, meaning no additional funds raised for extra equipment and not to mention many hungry little (and big) Nippers on Sunday mornings.

However, I am going to take this opportunity to thank just a few very special volunteers who have made my life so much easier running the kiosk week in week out and on carnivals weekends. For that matter at ANY kiosk events Nicky Flynn, Bob Orr and Randal Hardy have been invaluable.

Oh, and I can’t forget the man of many talents Andrew Patrick who stepped into my apron for the Senior States and by all accounts did a bloody awesome job in my absence - you’re a legend. Our Kiosk windows were open for Nipper Sundays and 3 carnivals this season not to mention Club Breakfasts and Nipper Breakup events, all of which were hugely successful in raising additional funds.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the boost to those funds in part was thanks to the Supporters Club for donating our very own coffee machine, a life saver in its own right. Thanks also to our much-loved Barista Ashley Moore. To that end, I hope you will all drop by the kiosk next season to volunteer some time and enjoy our tasty offerings where we can continue to raise funds for Surf Sports.

One weekday morning early in 2018 the Masters Ski paddlers of Maroochydore SLSC arrived at the club to be greeted by large, challenging surf conditions.

Dale Massie had been out on his new surf ski, doing ‘ins-and-outs’ near the surf club building. Warren ‘Bluey’ Lee launched his own ski and set about the daunting task of getting through the wide break and ‘out the back’. ‘Bluey’ made several unsuccessful attempts at penetrating the break, all the while being pushed north by the sweep.

Upon coming to shore during his own workout, Dale saw ‘Bluey’ still trying to get out the back, but by now he was, to Dale’s observation, alarmingly close to the river mouth on an outgoing low tide. Dale made the fateful decision to paddle down to assess the situation and assist if needed. By the time he got there, ‘Bluey’ was in the water and clearly needed assistance. Dale’s craft itself was in the river mouth. He paddled alongside ‘Bluey’ and yelled at him to hold on to the back of his (Dale’s) Ski.

Dale had made the assessment that the only way to get to relative safety was to paddle both of them through the last remaining waves, get out the back and assess the situation. The way Dale told it, he and ‘Bluey’ were ‘nailed’ by the last big wave in the set. Dale’s ski was destroyed by the impact. ‘Bluey’s’ Ski was long gone - they were now both in the water, in the river mouth, without a flotation device.

Dale’s assessment soon was that their situation was dire. He could get himself to shore, but he had to look after ‘Bluey’. This was the first point at which Dale feared for his own life and that of his ‘patient’.

Meanwhile another Masters ski paddler and former ‘Boatie’, Paul O’Brien, arrived at the clubhouse and assessed the

conditions for his paddle. As he looked seawards, he spied the action unfolding near the river mouth. Paul immediately saw the danger that both fellow-members were in. He too began to assess the available means of rescue.

In another fateful twist, Nipper Chairman Kirk Jarrott - former Australian Champion on Ski and Board - appeared beside him, asking what was going on. After a brief discussion between O’Brien and Jarrott about the poor likelihood of success from launching the IRB - which would use up precious time - Kirk, the younger of the two men by a considerable margin - selflessly grabbed a rescue board and set out to rescue both members.

Out at sea, Dale had been in fear of his and ‘Bluey’s’ life for what seemed to him to be about 15 minutes. The hopelessness of their situation was in danger of overwhelming him, but he remained as calm as he could, thinking about ways in which they could both get to shore in the raging sea. ‘Bluey’ appeared to be exhausted and Dale began wondering when his own limits of endurance would be reached.

Then Kirk appeared, punching through the massive waves on the board. He grabbed ‘Bluey’ and set off for the shore. Profoundly relieved, without the responsibility of his patient, Dale was also able to make his way to shore.

A possible single fatality was avoided by the selfless courage and skill of Dale Massie; an almost certain double fatality, in a dangerous river mouth, was averted by the quick thinking, skill and courage of Kirk Jarrott.

Dale Massie and Kirk Jarrott carried out the rescue in the very best Lifesaving traditions. They have the congratulations and thanks of their fellow members.

This year`s Aussie`s has made up for last year’s disappointment after Cyclone Debbie. Maroochydore performed astoundingly, winning for the first time the U17 Aussie Title Point score and coming a creditable 4th overall toppling age-old rivals Alexandra Headlands and Currumbin.

My highlights were watching our youth make us all proud, Ruben Zikarsky winning the U17 Champion Lifesaver his first year competing in this event, also winning the State and Branch. Tiarnee Massie winning the U17 Surf Race sprinting up the beach after being neck and neck on a wave with a dozen other girls. Hayden Cotter competing in U17 Finals winning 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze.

Our Club had another exceptional year in the team’s events also, competing in 26 finals across the range of disciplines collecting 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze.

I would like to personally thank our team that help make this come together every year.

The volunteers that assist the above with Water Safety, Transport, Carnival Officials and the parents who look after these amazing young competitors go to morning training, school and back to training week in week out.

Our depth in young competitors is something we have not seen for many years; the future is looking exciting. A final thank you to the Boards for your support throughout the year and everyone else who contributes to this awesome club.

achievement nounA thing done successfully with effort, skill, or courage.

This single word from The Oxford dictionary can be used to simply define the Maroochydore Surf Sports Program and the results this extraordinary group of individuals working together as a team have been able to achieve in the last season.

The vast array of results that can be found throughout this Annual Report is testament to the commitment of athletes, coaches, support staff and parents, countless early mornings, muscle aches and pains and the often-large distances travelled. The Black Swan’s persistence is now consistently pushing the strengths of many of the major clubs on a regular basis.

The past year we have seen our growth continue to strengthen in numbers, ability and diversity. The increased participation in more traditional events like Champion Lifesaver, Belt Racing, Rescue Tube Rescue and Pool Rescue has provided further outlets for many to achieve memorable results and explore new avenues of competition alongside the standard surf disciplines.

Again this year we have also had numerous representatives on State, National and International teams across many different sporting fields including, Kayaking, Open Water Swimming and Surf Lifesaving. A result along with all others this season I am sure every Member of Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club are proud to be associated with.

To all of you involved this season in some way either large or small, thank you for your continued support, you are the glue that binds the Black Swan Team and without you the pages don’t turn. You are all very much an integral and appreciated part of the team. I would like to thank you all for allowing me to also be a part of this great team. It has been an honour and a pleasure to be a part of your successes.

A final thank you must go to the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Supporters Club who without, none of these incredible achievements would be possible.

I will leave you with the current word of the year “Youthquake”.

A fitting conclusion to the path of 2018!

Just love watching Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club go from strength to strength.

This season has seen the U15-U17 age group swell to above 60 fully active and highly participatory members across all disciplines. From Nipper mentors and water safety, to providing first aid and IRB crews at Nipper carnivals along with their normal patrolling contribution. This group of highly capable and responsible young people have ensured Maroochydore is in an enviable position.

What about the Surf Sports side? Holy Wow! First Aid, Champion Life Saver and Surf Sports……. look at all the Bling, #1 for U17 at Aussies! It takes a community to make Maroochydore great so at the end of the season, we should all reflect and celebrate US.

Can’t wait for next season…. with another large group of amazing youth entering the U15-U17 age group.

    JUNIOR ACTIVITIES

The Youth of Maroochydore continue to develop and shine as a competitive, skilful group who manage to hold their own against the best athletes in the State and Australia.

This season Maroochydore finished 2nd in the Sunshine Coast Branch and 3rd in the Queensland State Titles Overall Club Point Scores. This is the 10th year running that we have managed to finish in the top 3 (point score) at the Queensland State Titles. No other club has managed this feat over this period, proving we are providing a great environment to develop our own athletes and Lifesavers.

As always, our Annual Boot Camp to Stradbroke Island set the tone for the season and laid a foundation for us to build on throughout the year. Thankyou to all the parents who gave up their time to help make the camp a life-long memory for the kids.

Beau Farrell and Jake Dale continued to increase their coaching capacity. The boys have done a fantastic job passing on their knowledge and moulding the group. The young athletes have really responded to Beau and Jake as they learn their craft.

Thank you to Kirk Jarrott and the Nipper Committee for the fantastic effort that they bestowed over the years. Your time and guidance has been appreciated.

    YOUTH TITLES

This season we took the group to Western Australia for the Aussie Titles. For some it was their first taste of “Aussies’’ racing and atmosphere, and for others the focus was about looking for redemption from last season. It was pleasing for all that there was a real team spirit amongst the group.

In reflection of last season, the decision was made to hold a weekend camp for the group just prior to Aussies. Danny Short enlisted the help of Maroochydore legends Kerri Thomas, Clint Irwin and Miranda Bell who passed on their knowledge and experiences of competing at the highest level. This gave the group an opportunity to bond and discuss their thoughts, assisting us to be prepared for the main event.

    We had a fantastic weekend of results;

    Gold

    • U15 Board Race - Dominique Stitt • U15 Male Surf Teams - Joseph McMenamin, Sam Short, Oliver Monaghan, Sunny Williams

Silver• U15 Female Surf Race - Isabella Shipp • U14 Female Beach Sprint - Kiara Rychvalsky • U15 Female Surf Teams - Dominique Stitt, Issabella Shipp, Ella Shuttleworth, Matilida Jarrot • U15 Male Board Relay - Oliver Monaghan, Jack Newton, Joseph McMenamin • U15 Female Cameron Relay - Isabella Shipp, Olivia Lomas, Dominique Stitt, Kiara Rychvalsky

    OPEN AUSSIES U17 – OPEN

The Open Section of the club had a massive Aussies, finishing a close 4th in the overall Club Point Score. For the first 3 days of competition we were virtually unstoppable as the U17 section racked up win after win.

Hayden Cotter, Ruben Zikarsky and Tiarnee Massie won 3 Gold each! With each athlete obtaining individual and team golds. This is the first time in our history that we have experienced three, triple Gold medallist from one Aussies.

The U17 Age Group went on to win Maroochydore’s first ever U17 Point Score at an Australian Titles. This is a very tight-nit group and the desire to “put in” for each other and take on “the best” Australia has to offer, was on display all week.

Our Open Female Taplin Team consisted of competitors from each of the age groups Tiarnee Massie (U17), Alexandra Clarke (U19) and Brianna Massie (Open). The girls went agonisingly close to the Gold medal before ultimately finishing second. This was an outstanding performance and typified the spirit shown over the week. A big thankyou to Chelsea Gillett who put the club first and swam the heat and semi of the Taplin.

Hayden Cotter had the whole beach talking after winning the U17 2km Swim with a time that beat the Open winner by 1 minute. Hayden then went on to win the U17 Male Surf Race and finished 3rd (run up beach for Gold) in the Open Men’s Race. Hayden’s ability to back up race after race and perform at a continual high level is astounding.

We had four U17 Girls in the Ski Final with 3 of the Girls on the winning wave. Alicia Fay ultimately prevailed in the sprint for the line to take out her first ever individual Title. Jenaya Massie finished a close 3rd with Tiarnee Massie 5th and Phoebe Wills – Grace on the wave behind.

Everyone who attend, experienced a fantastic week of racing and a real team atmosphere from the group. We sat in 3rd place on the Point Score from the Wednesday through to the last event Sunday (Open Male and Female Beach Flags). It was here, on the hill that I witnessed Maroochydore’s next “special generation” emerge. The whole competitive team stayed back and watched the Flags finals hoping/ praying that we could hang onto an 8-point lead over Kurrawa. This was real team spirit, it was unscripted and unprompted. As the group grew so did the excitement and a belief began to emerge form a group of friends/mates that anything was possible. This moment was a turning point for our club, this was the beginning of something special.

Gold• U17 Male Champion Lifesaver – Ruben Zikarsky• U17 Male Surf Race – Hayden Cotter • U17 Male 2km Ocean Swim – Hayden Cotter • U17 Female Surf Race – Tiarnee Massie • U17 Female Single Ski – Alicia Fay• U17 Female Surf Team – Tiarnee Massie, Sarah McGrath, Summer Short, Phoebe Wills-Grace • U17 Female Ski Relay – Alicia Fay, Tiarnee Massie, Jenaya Massie• U17 Male Surf Team – Hayden Cotter, Ethan Irvine, Adam Palmer, Ruben Zikarsky • U17 Male Board Relay – Adam Palmer, Kieran Webb, Ruben Zikarsky

    OCEANS 6 – NUTRI GRAIN

The Nutri Grain series took on a different format this season with qualifying for the Iron finals occurring on the Saturday of the Oceans 6 rounds. A small group of Maroochydore athletes chased the series around the east coast of Australia, racing the best in the country.

Tiarnee Massie (17yrs) qualified for Sundays finals on 3 occasions, with her best performance an outstanding 8th place. Tiarnee finished 19th in the overall standings and proved time and again she can “take it to” the older competitors.

Tiarnee will be a year older and a year wiser next season. Having come to understand the racing (through experience) will only assist her to improve her overall standing. I’m predicting big things for this girl next season and along with the Palmer brothers and Hayden Cotter, Maroochydore will continue to rise.

    CONCLUSION

Last season’s Aussies may have been a washout, but we still managed a swag of team Gold, this year we got the chance to finish the job and everyone performed. We have now strung together a few solid seasons of racing at this level and next season looks to be even better.

Again, I stress the importance of working together and in one direction. We all have a role to play in creating an environment, that allows these athletes and lifesavers to flourish. The athletes really “put in” over the season, they worked hard together and they “grew together”. We are at the beginning of something special, let’s make sure we (as a club) get it right.

Thank you to Rhys Drury, Michael Brooks, Glen Wilson, Jake Dale, Beau Farrell, Lenore Grice, Madd
