CINCINNATI REDS (38-44) RHP Michael Lorenzen (3-3, 3.58) vs. MIAMI MARLINS (35-50) RHP Jose Fernandez (1-0, 4.50) MARLINS PARK, MIAMI, FL Thursday, July 9, 2015 – 7:10 P.M. FISH BITES The Marlins kick off their final homestand of the first half tonight at 7:10 p.m. with the first of four against Cincinnati. Miami will send right-hander Jose Fernandez (1-0, 4.50) to the bump for his second start of the season; he is 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA (11.0 ip/7 er) in two career starts against the Reds. Cincinnati, which was rained out in Washington, D.C. last night, will counter with righty Michael Lorenzen (3-3, 3.58), who is making the 12 th start (14 th appearance) of his rookie season. Lorenzen’s most recent win came against the Fish in the Queen City on June 21, when he tossed 7.0 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits (one home run) and one walk (intentional), with five strikeouts, in a 5-2 contest. Mi- ami is coming off a 1-4 road trip against the Cubs (1-2) and Red Sox (0-2). Following next week’s All-Star break, the Fish hit the road for 10 games, visiting Philadelphia (July 17-19), Arizona (July 20-22), and San Diego (July 23-26). Tonight’s National Anthem will be performed by Miss YaYa, and the ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out by season ticket holder Ken Strauss. VS. THE REDS Cincinnati leads the season series after taking two of three from the Marlins at Great American Ball Park from June 19-21. The Clubs have split their last eight meetings overall; if Miami breaks that stalemate in this series, it will earn its first season-series victory over the Reds since 2005 (4-2). Since 2006, the Fish are 0-6-3 in season series against Cincinnati, which has a 40-23 record against Miami in that time. The Reds are 46-38 all-time in South Florida (7-3 at Marlins Park), and lead the all-time series, 103-74. LAST NIGHT The Marlins could not avoid a brief two-game sweep at Fenway Park, falling to the Red Sox, 6-3. The Marlins surrendered five unearned runs in the contest thanks to three errors, the first a throwing error by starting pitcher Tom Koehler that led to a four-run third inning for Boston. Miami cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth thanks to five consecutive singles with one out. J.T. Realmuto and Cole Gillespie drove in runs with their knocks, and Ichiro Suzuki snapped a career-long 0x29 skid with the final hit of the rally. The Red Sox added single runs in the sixth and seventh to cushion their lead. Derek Dietrich had a career-high three hits on the night. LOOKING FOR A FIRST (AT) HOME Jose Fernandez and Montreal’s David Palmer are currently tied for the most consecutive home starts without a loss to open a career since 1914, according to Stats LLC. Fernandez has a career record of 13-0 with a 1.23 ERA (138.2 ip/19 er) in 21 starts at Marlins Park. Since 2013, when Fernandez made his Major League debut, Michael Wacha has the next- closest home winning percentage (min. 21 GS), at .846 (11-2). Fernandez’s home ERA is the best in the Majors over that span, ahead of Clayton Kershaw (1.67) and Johnny Cueto (1.72), as is his .167 average against, ahead of Cueto (.176) and Jake Arrieta (.189). HIT & RUN Dee Gordon last night recorded his 117 th hit and 30 th stolen base of the season. He became just the second player in Marlins’ history to reach at least 117 hits and 30 steals prior to the All-Star break, joining Juan Pierre, who had 117 & 44 at the break in 2003. Gordon and Pierre are two of just six players (seven times) in the last 25 years to reach those plateaus prior to the All-Star break. The others were: Kenny Lofton in 1994 (129 & 45), Jose Reyes in 2008 (119 & 32) and 2011 (124 & 30), Ichiro Suzuki in 2008 (119 & 34), and Jose Altuve in 2014 (127 & 41). SPEED ON DECK Cincinnati’s Billy Hamilton (42) and Miami’s Dee Gordon (30) rank 1-2 in the Majors in stolen bases this season. They also rank 1-2 in the Majors since 2014, with Hamilton holding a smaller advantage of 98-94 in that time. Hamilton’s success rate over the last two seasons is 77.2 percent (98-for-127), slightly ahead of Gordon’s 75.8 percent (94-for-124). However, Hamilton has been successful on 87.5 percent of his 48 attempts this season, while Gordon currently checks in at 73.2 percent in his 41 attempts. ALL-STAR SEND-OFF PRESENTATION The Marlins, along with Majestic Athletic, the Official Uniform Provider of MLB, will be recognizing Dee Gordon with a special pre-game ceremony on the field prior to tomorrow’s game. Gordon will be presented with his official All-Star jerseys that will be worn during Gatorade All-Star Workout Day. COLE IS HOT Cole Gillespie, hitting .318 in nine games since being selected on June 27, started his Marlins career with three hitless pinch-hit appearances. He has started in six games since then, batting .368 (7x19) with three runs scored, four doubles, two RBI, and a stolen base. Gillespie is also 2x4 with runners in scoring position in that time, with a single and an RBI in each of his last two at-bats with RISP. TURNING A CORNER Christian Yelich had a nine-game hitting streak snapped last night, going 0x3 with a walk. Yelich has reached base in 10 straight games, tied for his longest streak of the season (also, June 26-July 7). He is batting .485 (16x33) with a .585 on-base percentage during his current on-base streak. Since the start of June, Yelich is batting .308 (36x117) in 33 games, compared to .220 (27x123) in 32 games combined between April and May. Yelich is hitting .309 (25x81) in 22 games in the second spot in the order. At Marlins Park, Yelich is hitting .315 (35x111) this season, compared to .217 (28x129) on the road; he enters this series with a five-game hitting streak at home (.643/9x14). HIT PARADE Dee Gordon was 1x5 last night in Boston, notching his 117 th hit of the season with a single in the third inning. That knock tied him with Juan Pierre (2003) and Hanley Ramirez (2007) for the most first-half hits in Club history. According to Stats LLC, Gordon is tied for the fourth-most singles (96) all-time by a second baseman prior to the All-Star break, behind Florida’s Luis Castillo (103 in 2002), the Cubs’ Glenn Beckert (101 in 1971), and Philadelphia’s Dave Cash in 1974 (97) and 1975 (96). Last season, Casey McGehee and Andrew McCutchen led the NL in hits at the All-Star break with 115. MARLINS VS. The three runs allowed in debut snapped streak of 20 straight home starts allowing fewer than three earned runs, which fell one short of Major League record. San Diego’s Andrew Cashner allowed fewer than three earned runs in 21 consecutive home starts from June 2013 to April 2015. One other pitcher did it in 20 straight home starts: Orel Hershiser (April 1985 to April 1986). - Elias

His last Major League start prior to surgery was on May 9, 2014 at San Diego, when he took loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits (two home runs) and a walk while striking out five in 5.0 innings.

Owns lifetime mark of 13-0 in 21 career starts at home. Holds Club record for consecutive home starts without a loss to begin a career. Is just second pitcher in Modern Era to go undefeated in first 21 career starts at home, equaling Modern Day record set by David Palmer from 1979-84. - Stats LLC and Elias

In 16 career road starts, has gone 4-8 with 3.93 ERA (91.2/40), yet has held opponents to .214 average. Has gone 7.0+ innings in five of 16 road starts, allowing three-or-more runs seven times.

Earned National League Pitcher of the Month for April 2014, going 4-1 with 1.59 ERA (39.2 IP/3 ER). Award marked first career POM award. Held opponents to .174 average and struck out 55, with just eight walks (6.88 so/bb ratio). Averaged 12.48 strikeouts-per-9, second among NL starters, behind Stephen Strasburg (14.03).
