Family and friends are important to most people. For

Marlborough Newcomers’ Network members that includes

a larger extended family – our newcomers – the changing faces and ethnic backgrounds of

people who make up the local community.

Historically the arrival of new migrants to Marlborough was

minimal and generally support and introductions happened at

neighbourhood level. Today, the face of Marlborough

has changed significantly. We are now a very multicultural

community with an increasing number of newcomers from

around the world and other parts of New Zealand settling here.

I believe the Marlborough

community is enriched by the culture and customs our

Christmas

For most ‘kiwis’ Christmas is a special time to be together with family and friends. For Christians it is time to celebrate the birth of

Christ. For others it means different things. For many it brings extra pressures and sadness, particularly those living far away from

family. Whatever our beliefs and traditions are around Christmas I think we

would all agree that Christmas is for children. It is not as much about opening presents as opening our hearts and perhaps a day to view the world through the eyes of a precious child.

newcomers bring however for some people adjusting to a new

and often very different environment can be difficult.

The Marlborough Newcomers’ Network can help. The Group

whose objective is to provide friendship and support to people

new to a region is one of 21 Groups operating throughout New Zealand under the umbrella of the

NZ Newcomers’ Network offers friendship, social events and

International Women’s Night

A special night to remember took place recently when

over fifty migrant women living in Marlborough joined together for an evening of

friendship and celebration of the multicultural faces of

women now visible in the Marlborough community.

It was also an opportunity

to hear the inspiring stories of two migrant women;

one from Papua New Guinea (pictured top right with her two daughters) the other a

woman from a middle eastern background who

gave inspiring and thought provoking insights into their life stories.

“Building Great Dads”

A Parenting Course for Marlborough Dads

This relaxed parenting course is designed for

21st century Dads who want to parent in a positive and caring manner that does not

rely on power, control, authority or physical discipline.

The course is free and will increase your skills, knowledge and confidence, and give

you a model to shape your relationship with your children. The goal is to help Dads to

parenting with a lot less stress, and a lot more fun.
