Fort DerussyFort DeRussy, an earthen fort built to defend the Red River from naval intrusions during the Civil War, is located in Avoyelles Parish, about 3 miles north of the city of Marksville. The fort was named after Colonel Lewis G. DeRussy of Natchitoches, the oldest West Point graduate to serve in the Confederate Army and a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Mexican War. DeRussy, a prominent engineer in civilian life, was engineering officer in charge of the construction of the first fortifications at that site. Construction of the fort began in November of 1862.

Fort DeRussy was the site of three major Civil War engagements and numerous minor skirmishes, including the Red River Campaign. Fort DeRussy was never re-manned after the Red River Campaign, but it was used as a campsite by troops passing through the area and as a signal station. Although eroded by time, weather, and a destructive occupying army, a substantial portion of the earthworks are still in existence, and the main redoubt was purchased by La Commission des Avoyelles in March 1996. The property (about 70 acres) became a State Historic Site in 1999. Although not open to the public at this time, work is ongoing at the fort with the purpose of making the area accessible to visitors in the near future.

The site's Cultural & Educational Resource Center (CERC) features arti-facts with exhibits and interpretation of this culture. While visiting the CERC, take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the natural beauty of the Tunica-Biloxi Nature Trail. The 1-mile tree-covered boardwalk includes crossing points over the Coulee Des Grues waterway with access to Paragon Casino Resort and the RV Resort. Located on the Tunica Biloxi Reservation.

Historical state siteLocated east of LA Hwy. 1, this site is of archaeological significance due to buried evidence of a Native American culture that flourished approximately 2,000 years ago.

spring Bayou WilDliFe ManageMent area Spring Bayou covers 12,506 acres. The area, owned by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, is located in the low-lying Red River backwater system in north-central Avoyelles Parish, 2 miles east of Marksville, off LA Hwys. 115 and 452. Approximately 40 percent of the area is covered by water, including various open lakes, bayous, bays, and sloughs. Spring Bayou offers three concrete boat ramps, and the area is great for hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and now offers kayaking. Visitors to the bayou can view alligators, birds, and 500-year-old cypress trees.


Hypolite-BorDelon HoMe & tourist centerThe Hypolite Bordelon home is a Creole house typical of the dwellings of early Avoyelles families. The Bordelon family who built the house was one of the parish’s pioneer families. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

courtHouse squareThe Avoyelles Parish Courthouse is located in the center of downtown Marksville and is a major focal point of the city of Marksville. Besides being a historical site of the freeing of Solomon Northrop, it is currently often the setting or backdrop for many other festive events, such as the annual Lighting of the Courthouse (Decem-ber),the Marksville Farmers’ Market (June), Halloween on the Square (October), and First Thursdays on the Square (monthly).

tHe tunica Biloxi poW WoW Held annually in May, the Tunica-Biloxi Pow Wow provides a great opportunity for the community to celebrate its native heritage with an event that includes craft displays, cultural exhibits, and delicious traditional food. For centuries, neighboring nations have gathered for sport, singing, dancing, and feasting. Like any other good neighbor, Indian nations have also shared their crafts, music, and stories. The modern pow wow, as we know it, came into existence in the late 19th century especially as tribes moved closer together in the Ameri-can West. No other event captures the American Indian spirit like the pow wow. Dancers in colorful dress move gracefully around the ring, a steady drum beat directing their movements. Tradition is passed from one genera-tion to the next. The Native attire worn and the dances, songs, and drum rhythms performed express traditions that began over 20,000 years ago. Today's pow wows of-ten feature competitions in categories such as tradition-al, fancy, grass, shawl, and jingle-dress dancing.

cHristMas extraVaganzaThe Annual Christmas Extravaganza, held by the Marksville Chamber of Commerce, is the largest holiday shopping event in a multi-parish area. With more than 90 ven-dors, the Extravaganza provides a wide variety of unique handmade goods, including quilts, dolls, ornaments, jewelry, soaps, wooden bowls, toys, holiday wreaths, and more. Avoyelles Public Charter School is a public, charter, alternative school in Mansura, Louisiana, serving 697 students in grades K–12. According to state standards, 92% of students at this school are considered proficient in math and/or reading.

HistoryLocal lore suggests that the town of Marksville was named after Marc Eliche, an Italian trader moving through the area who was forced to stop when one of his wagon wheels broke down. While coping with the problem of repairing his wagon, the adventurer found what the Native Americans had known for centu-ries — with its green prairies and the moss-hung shade trees lining the bayous and lakes, this was such beautiful country that he couldn’t bear to leave it. He was also im-pressed with the friendliness of the Native Americans.

Marc Eliche never traveled any farther. In 1796, he married Julie Carmouche

of nearby Pointe Coupee, and they established a

trading post just south of the current Marksville City Hall site. He also obtained a land grant from obliging Spanish officials upon which to locate his home. Naturally, the location

became associated with the name of the trading

post owner, and “Marc’s Ville” (also known as “Marc’s

Village” or “Marc’s Farm”) in the old French was an easy tran-

sition by Americans to the name “Marksville.”

The site was recognized on United States survey maps as early as 1809, and the date has been pinpointed by twentieth-century Marksville with festivals celebrating the event. By 1810, the population of the area was recorded as 783 Caucasians, 404 slaves, and 22 free African Americans. At the time of the 2010 Census, Marksville had a population of 5,702.

The old Avoyelles Parish Courthouse is a landmark that houses parish records dating back to the eighteenth century. The atmosphere around the courthouse is no less influenced by neighborly visits of old men sitting under the shade trees on the lawn and by the prevailing Victorian trim on downtown businesses. On the courthouse square are two historic markers that attest to two significant events in Avoyelles — the Bowie Knife Marker documenting the mak-ing of the Bowie Knife in Avoyelles as the first, and the reference marker to nearby Fort De Russey, which saw significant military action during the Civil War.

Also of great importance to the area was the national interest focused on the Avoyelles Native American tribe and the stream of visitors who came to confer with Bob “Stu” Neitzel on archeological digs. It was Neitzel who appropriately enough left the story that delineates the area.
