1) WHAT ARE MAINFRAMES
A very large and expensive computer capable of supporting hundreds, or even thousands, of users
simultaneously. Mainframes are more powerful than supercomputers because they support more
simultaneous programs. But supercomputers can execute a single program faster than a mainframe.
Mainframe is an industry term for a large computer. The name comes from the way the machine is build
up: all units (processing, communication etc.) were hung into a frame. Thus the MainComputer is build
into a frame, therefore the Name : Mainframe.
Its an Ultimate Server in Client/Server Model of Computing.
Their main purpose is to run commercial applications of Fortune 1000 businesses and other large-scale
computing purposes. Think here of banking and insurance businesses where enormous amounts of
data are processed, typically (at least) millions of records, each day.
2) WHY MAINFRAMES
Todays Largest and Most Powerful Global Corporations run their businesses on mainframes.
Mainframes use for both Batch & Online Processing.
They Process millions of transactions and serve terabytes of data with praiseworthy response times.
Statistically, an IBM mainframe goes down only once in 50 years or so.
3) THE VALUE OF MAINFRAMES TODAY
Today, Mainframe computers play a central role in the daily operations of most of the World's Largest
Corporations including many Fortune 1000 companies.
The Mainframe computer continues to form the foundation of modern business.
The Long-Term Success of Mainframe Computers is without precedent in the information technology
(IT)field.
Mainframe generations starting in the 1950s
Many large corporations and government agencies still use their mainframesystems as the base for their web operations and data mining. With their robustprocessing power and unequalled reliability, these organizations rely onmainframes for their mission-critical functions.By porting the information through GUI interfaces, users can still enjoy the bellsand whistles that come with today's web-friendly client/server applications.
However, the computer operations staff sleeps better knowing the back-endis being handled using time-tested, scalable technology that comes fromMainframe Technology. Its now quite clear that corporate customers still like to have centrallycontrolled, very predictable, reliable computing systems exactly the kind ofsystems that IBM MainFrames Specializes in.
