WARSAW—The 118th annual con-vention of the Virginia Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy, was held last October at the Dulles Marriott.

At the convention, Patricia “Pat” Pugh, a member of Fort Lowry Chap-ter 2695, Warsaw, was presented the Judah P. Benjamin award in recogni-tion of outstanding endeavors and achievements through vision, effective leadership and success with veterans’ activities, civic programs and as a child advocate, reported Gay Packett.

It was further noted that her service to the community shows she has a high

regard for the community. Pugh was presented a certif icate and a pin by award chairman Linda Tyree and past division president Suzanne Townsend.

Pugh is a graduate of Rappahannock High School and Virginia Common-wealth University, said Packett. She is a member of Cobham Park Baptist Church, is a choir member and serves on the welcome committee.

For the past eight years she has served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteer working with vul-nerable children in the surrounding counties, said Packett. She is serving her 10th year representing Richmond

County on the Selective Service Draft Board in the Standby System.

In addition to her school board duties, she represents the county on the Northern Neck Technical Center exec-utive committee. Since 2006 she has served as a vice president of the North-ern Neck Historical Society. Presently she serves as junior vice president of Northern Neck Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 7167 and Fort Lowry Chapter 2695 and serves as scholarship chairman for both.

Pugh also is executive director for the Warsaw-Richmond County Main Street Program. From left are Linda Tyree, Patricia “Pat” Pugh and

JEWELRY FACTS

BY ROSS CHRISTIANSEN

Ross’s Rings and Things, Ltd.

Although gold will not tarnish, decay or corrode with the passage of time, its beauty can be dulled by particles of dust. Pendants and other intricate pieces are especially susceptible. While these accumulations will never damage the gold, they certainly can detract from its beauty. Occasional and effortless cleaning can prevent this. Stop in and let us explain this and clean your jewelry for you. We will also inspect it for any damage.

CALLAO—The Northum-berland County Chapter of the American Red Cross on Febru-ary 4 held a blood drive at the Callao Rescue Squad Building.

“We had a special treat at the drive,” reported Kitty Creeth. “Sarah Bowis, mar-keting director from Farnham Manor, supplied us with soup, tuna salad and egg salad for lunches.”

The ladies of Henderson United Methodist Church made the lunches and provided the coffee, she added.

“I want to thank Elsie New-some, Anne Crowder and Mar-garet Beauchamp for doing such a nice job,” said Creeth. “A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the other volunteers who helped.”

The volunteer roll includes Rick Skelton, Joan Clements, Sandra Ehlert, Ann LeKander, Marge Himler, Rich Landon and Garland Dillard of the Heathsville and Reedville Masons; Sherry Fisher, Julie Pritchard, Northern Neck Bot-tling Co., Sue and Howard Fones of the Callao Rescue Squad, and Creeth.

RICHMOND—According to some environmentalists, fracking for oil and gas is the biggest threat to the drinking water aquifer and the creeks and rivers in Virginia’s Coastal Plain Region.

Virginia Outdoors Foun-

dation (VOF) is the biggest land conservation agency under the Secretary of Natural Resources. VOF’s mission is to conserve land—yet recent policy changes permit frack-ing in some of its Conserva-tion Easements.

Artist visitsArtist Barney Higgins Harris of Zekiah Stained Glass in Farnham recently visited the Women’s Club of Northumberland County. She talked about stained glass and brought an assortment of her stained glass art works. She offers classes in making stained glass masterpieces. From left are Harris and club president Vicki Eggers.

RICHMOND—The Rich-ard Henry Lee Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) recently was awarded a flag banner during the 124th Virginia State annual meeting in Richmond.

The banner was presented to the chapter for recogniz-ing a person or community organization for proper display of the U.S. Flag, reported Bob Denton. The chapter was represented by president Richard Fickling, and member Mike Lyman.

Fickling was accompa-nied by his wife, Jo Ann, a member of the Cobbs Hall chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Lyman is the Virginia Soci-

ety SAR committee chair-man for patriot grave mark-ing.

The weekend-long event concluded with a formal banquet. The new Virginia Society president W. A. Broadus Jr., was sworn into office by national president general Joseph W. Dooley. The speaker was U.S. Army 1st. Lt. Jason L. Church, a wounded veteran, who served in Afghanistan. His comments emphasized the fact that today’s military men and women are doing the same job as patriot ances-tors—fighting for freedom.

To join the SAR, call the chapter registrar at 438-5407.

LANCASTER—Chapter 1406, United Daughters of the Confederacy, on Febru-ary 19 raised $120 and col-lected a variety of paper products, laundry deter-gents, cleaning solutions and snacks for the Haven Shelter and Services.

President Jo Ann Fickling reported she presented two supplemental ancestor cer-tif icates to Susan Beer. Her Confederate ancestors were Samuel L. Barnes and Wil-liam A. Barnes, both of Co. D, 17th Regiment Virginia Infantry.

Fickling also presented Cheryl Brown Davis with a certif icate for Wyatt Titmash who provided Material Aid to the Cause selling hoop poles to a C.S.A. Bakery, said Fickling. Hoop poles are the rings that go around

a barrel. The barrels were used for shipping flour and bread to the soldiers.

Monument chairman Susan Hudson announced that a contractor has been selected for the conservation and restoration of the Con-federate Monuments in Lan-caster and Northumberland counties. Chapter members voted to accept the recom-mendation as presented by the committee.

It was sad to report the chapter’s longtime honorary member Ralph Baylor died. He and his wife, Elinor Joan Ball Baylor, did much to support the chapter, said Fickling. Many members attended the funeral and were honored to serve as honor guards.

The next meeting will be March 19.

Petition opposes fracking in conservation easementsFracking Is Not Conser-

vation recently launched an online petition, at FrackingIs-NotConservation.com, to give voice to the will of the people who oppose VOF’s policy of allowing fracking in conserva-tion easements.

The petition is provided free to the public and is simple to fill out. The website auto-matically sends the petition to the Secretary of Natural Resources and to VOF, and provides contact information for Senate committees on agri-culture, conservation and nat-

ural resources, and finance, as well as House committees on agriculture, Chesapeake and natural resources, and appro-priations.

The website provides links to conservation groups who have opposed fracking, such as Audubon, The Nature Conser-vancy, and US Fish & Wildlife Service. It also provides links to newspaper articles and a U.S. government report that explains how fracking fluid caused “a significant die-off of aquatic life in Acorn Fork” in Kentucky.
