Fresher's fayre - 2012
A very successful fresher's fayre this year, we signed up 37 paid members to the society, and generated a
lot of interest from students on many different courses across the university .
Children in Need bun sale - 2012 After our bun sale in 2011 which swept all SU publications and local press by storm we decided to step it
up a gear this year with an online ordering system to ensure we were able to supply some yummy cup
cakes and treats to as many staff and students as possible. Thanks to the management of Katie King the
ordering system proved a success and we beat last years total by £200 raising a fantastic total of £1000
for Children In Need. Society members were invited to the BBC for the Children in Need party to
celebrate their hard work and dedication to the charity every year and made it into all SU publications
and local press. Something most people don’t know is that the marketing society bun sale is the most
successful bun sale ever to have taken place at the University of Ulster! Go team!
Make a Wish Fashion show - March 2013
For the first time the Marketing Society hosted a Fashion show in the Merchant Hotel, Belfast. The event
was enjoyed by students, lecturers, local businesses, family members and our charity representatives
from Make A Wish. Under the management of Emma Sharkey the event was a great success and reached
national press. Being a charity close to our hearts we were delighted to see Jane’s family at the event and
Miss Northern Ireland even made an appearance on the night. A massive thank you and congratulations
to Emma and her team of organisers who raised over £300 on the night, and we look forward to the
Fashion Show returning in 2014.
Dodge ball - RAG WEEK 2013
The Marketing Society has always been a main
contributor to RAG Week in the university. This
year we had one of our members elected onto
the RAG Committee in Jordanstown, Catherine
Isted - who went on to win ‘RAGer of the Year’
at the Student Union Recognition Awards held
in April 2013. Our RAG event for 2013 was a
Dodge Ball tournament, everyone who took
part had a ‘ball’ - and we were strongly
supported by the Law Society at this event.
Marketing Society Formal - 2013
Another great night for all marketing students took
place in the Europa Hotel, Belfast at our annual
formal. Students from all years joined by lecturers
enjoyed the evening of entertainment and the
lovely meal in the penthouse suite overlooking the
city. A great event to bring the year to a close, and
celebrate the hard work and dedication of
all our staff and students. A big
thank you must go to Mark
Marwood for all his hard work
throughout the year and to
Michaela who supported him
along the way; liaising with the
final year students and
organising the awards for the
night. Well done folks.

At the beginning of the year, we made it our goal to achieve GOLD society status;
with our Events and Students Union Co-Ordinator - Chris Shannon creating strong
links with the SU on Jordanstown campus and ensuring progress throughout the year
to ensure the society achieved the requirements needed for GOLD. At the event held
on Magee campus in April 2013 the Marketing Society were delighted to have received
GOLD, but also to have been awarded ‘Society of the year’ over all four campuses. Not only has
the society been recognised for its successful events and other initiatives for students on the BSc
Marketing course, but some members of the society also received awards on the night. Catherine Isted, a
first year student on the BSc Marketing program and next years Charity and SU Co-Ordinator was
awarded ‘RAGer of the year’ for her contributions during RAG (Raise and Give) week on the Jordanstown
Campus. Chris Shannon our current Events and SU Co-Ordinator and second year Marketing student was
awarded the ‘Outstanding Contribution Award’ for his services to the Students Union through the society
and at national level. A great night for the Marketing Society and the BSc Marketing Program.

Make a Wish - Chosen charity 2012/13
The Make a Wish Foundation was chosen as this year’s nominated charity in memory of Jane Shields, a very inspirational Year 2 student who sadly passed away last year. Touched by the unique experience Jane had with the foundation, the society made it their goal to raise money for this charity in memory of their classmate.
The Make a Wish Foundation grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions. There are 20,000 children and young people living in the UK with a life-threatening condition and it is their aim to grant a wish to every one of them. This global and national based organisation is renowned for its efforts in creating spectacular moments in the lives of children and young adults.
On behalf of The Marketing Society I would like to thank all of the staff and students from the BSc Marketing program for their continuous support throughout the
year. I believe the society has certainly met it’s aim of establishing connections and a sense of community between the different year groups on the BSc Marketing course. I wish the new committee all the best for the year ahead and look forward to the events and successes to come in 2013/14.
Best wishes, Chris Shannon - Event and Students Union Co-Ordinator - 2012/13
