Jackson native Dr. Heather Harding brings message of hope to the Women of Color ConferenceFebruary 26, 2018
Jackson College invites students and community to a 2018 Women of Color Leadership Conference: Taking It to Another Level and Cultivating Greatness, Saturday, March 31 in Bert Walker Hall on Central Campus.
Keynote speaker for the conference will be Dr. Heather Harding, Jackson native and senior program officer for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Harding’s career has spanned classroom teaching, professional development, non-profit management, and empirical research; her life’s mission is to improve educational opportunities for all children. In her current position with the Gates Foundation, she works on efforts to improve the U.S. education system. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and as an undergraduate attended the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. She is a 1988 graduate of Jackson High School.
”I am deeply humbled that the staff at Jackson College asked me to speak to the young people of my hometown – especially to young women of color,” Harding said. “At this moment in history, women of color have a great opportunity to make change, and we have lots of examples of this so I’m fortunate to carry this message forward. Our society is grappling with many different facets of living up to our American dreams of equality, and I’m hoping that I can provide inspiration for those who need it by sharing my story and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.”
Harding said that, for her, the pathway included formal education and working to build a bridge across differences. “What I hope to illuminate is that there is more than one way to be successful and when we understand our strengths, we can make the best choices for us as individuals,” she added.
Breakout sessionsFollowing Harding’s keynote address, the conference will feature two breakout sessions, including:
Developing the Leader Within, discussing the importance of educational attainment, empowerment and self-esteem, building your personal brand, networking and more for personal success.Essentials of a Successful Relationship, focusing on the importance of communication and developing oneness in romantic relationships, prioritizing relationship, career and family, and finding a partner who is trustworthy and respectful.
This event is hosted by the Jackson College Sisters of Strength. Kelly Crum, assistant director of multicultural affairs, said the event is open to all, students and community.
“I’m looking for women to gain awareness of who they are and that they are worthy. We want to help break down barriers and empower women to be successful,” Crum said. “We want to let women know that they can take it to another level by cultivating greatness.”
Plan to attendThe Women of Color Conference is free. Registration will be held from 8:15-8:45 a.m. Saturday, March 31 in Bert Walker Hall, Rooms 144 & 145. Sam Rhine Genetics Conference to discuss cancer-causing mutations, DNAFebruary 26, 2018
Students and community members are invited to learn the latest advances in genetics research when the noted speaker and educator Sam Rhine presents a Genetics Update Conference Friday, March 9 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Harold Sheffer Music Hall, Potter Center.
Over the years, Rhine has spoken to tens of thousands of students and teachers about genetics research. High school and college students who attend Rhine’s conference are often enrolled in biology or Advanced Placement biology classes, are college bound, in college or in pre-professional tracks like medicine, life sciences or social studies. Every presentation begins with a review of the basics, so less experienced students need not worry about being lost. Students have a unique chance to hear one of the top educators in the country present the most recent genetics information.
Topics this yearThis year’s conference will cover Genes and Cancer, exploring the main sources of mutations that lead to cancer, and CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) update. With the discovery of CRISPR, a bacterial cell organelle can now be controlled in the laboratory to slice and dice the DNA of any biologic creature. This has led to intriguing applications, such as editing the genomes of plants and animals for agricultural and medical purposes; correcting the gene mutation that leads to sickle cell anemia, and modification of the genome of a human embryo, immediately after conception, to correct a harmful, lethal gene.
Sam Rhine has crossed the country for 30-plus years presenting the latest genetic information to students and teachers. Sam has devoted himself to genetics education. He is a gifted speaker with the desire to take biology out of the textbook and see how it works in the real world.
Admission to the Sam Rhine Genetic Update Conference is $20 per person for students, teachers and community guests. Jackson College faculty, staff and students, including dual-enrolled high school students, are free with student ID or class schedule. Please pre-register online at www.samrhine.com.._________________________________
Jefferson Starship brings new energy to rock classicsFebruary 22, 2018
Find your way back to the rock ‘n’ roll you grew up with! Jefferson Starship performs at the Potter Center at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 10.
Jefferson Starship formed in the wake of legendary 1970s band and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Jefferson Airplane. Jefferson Starship brings new energy to their classic songs like, “We Built This City” and “Miracles,” while staying true to the integrity of the music. Founder Paul Kantner (who died in 2016 at age 74) knew that combining powerful creative forces, personalities and talents could create something great. Between 1974 and 1984, Jefferson Starship released eight gold and platinum albums, 20 hit singles, sold out concerts worldwide and lived out legendary rock escapades.
Today’s Jefferson Starship remains dedicated to breathing new life into the musical legacy. The music that defined a generation is alive and well and more relevant than ever in pop culture songs such as “Volunteers,” “White Rabbit,” “Wooden Ships,” “Somebody to Love,” “Today,” “Count on Me,” “Fast Buck Freddie,” “Jane” and “Find Your Way Back” and continue to reverberate throughout the collective consciousness today. They go to the edge, pushing the sonic boundaries while staying true to the original music.

Your Voice: Sexual assault topic of Monday forumFebruary 1, 2018
Sexual assault on college campuses continues to make headlines. Jackson College invites students to come together at 4 p.m. Monday in Bert Walker Hall, Room 145, for a discussion, “Your Voice: Sexual Assault on Campuses.”
Cases at Michigan State University and others across the nation have brought sexual assault on college campuses to the forefront. Sexual violence on campus impacts students of all gender identities. Some estimates show that as many as one in four females will be the victim of sexual assault on campus by the time they finish college. Victims of sexual assault may suffer short- and long-term health problems, such as sexually transmitted diseases, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, chronic illness and post-traumatic stress disorder. Victims’ academic achievement may be impacted.
Students may join in a facilitated discussion with Student Life Director Chas Lietaert about this important topic. “We want to get students together and to give them a space to have a voice on this important topic,” Lietaert said.
The event is free and all students and employees are welcome._________________________________

Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
