In 2011, we saw a slow and steady rebound ofthe economy, though we're certainly not out ofthe woods in terms of the economy as a whole.U.S. markets continue to face uncertainty overthe European economy and escalating gas pricescould derail the momentum.
Closer to home, The Washington-Baltimore areaseems to be somewhat insulated from thesevere economic turmoil the rest of the countryhas faced. Our local housing market has startedto rebound at a favorable rate compared tonational levels. And the Base Realignment andClosure activities, development in and aroundSilver Spring, and road work and newconstruction are all clear signs of a healthy, vibrant, local economy. One of the main driversfor this recovery remains the stability of federaljobs in the MD, DC and VA areas.
To effectively navigate today's economy, businesses need a savvy financial co-pilot -someone to guide them through rough watersand provide a safe harbor. As the largest publiclytraded banking company headquartered andoperating in Maryland, Sandy Spring Bank iswell positioned to help businesses of all sizessurvive turbulent economic times and emergepositioned for future success.
Our seasoned professionals have access to anarray of commercial banking products andservices that enable clients to simplify theirfinances and spend more time focusing on theirgoals. Sandy Spring bankers are not onlyaccessible, but are committed to turning aroundrequests as expeditiously as possible. Loandecisions are made locally here in Maryland; notfarmed out to other states for consideration bypeople unfamiliar with you and your business.
It is this relationship banking that differentiatesSandy Spring Bank from the competition. Ourbankers have raised the bar when it comes to
personal service. Not only do our bankers workwith businesses to craft cost-cutting and time-saving solutions - such as affordable employee-benefit programs, ebiz online banking, andmerchant services - but they anticipate needs asbusinesses evolve and grow.
Critical to a business' success is the ability tomanage cash flow and finance growth. A line ofcredit from Sandy Spring Bank can help smoothout income fluctuations. During lean times, aline of credit affords the freedom to accessworking capital for things like supplies, employee payroll, and inventory. During times offinancial expansion, excess funds can bedeposited into Sweep Investment Accounts.
Despite headlines to the contrary, many banks -Sandy Spring chief among them - continue tolend to new and existing commercial clients. Wehave also made variety of sales/processimprovements to better serve the small businesscommunity. As an active SBA lender, we arecommitted to supporting the businesses andinstitutions that give this region such vitality andcharacter.
To that end, our employees are active andengaged in their communities. Last year alone,Sandy Spring Bank staff gave over 31,000 hoursin volunteer work and community improvement, such as the bank's Rebuilding Together andHabitat for Humanity teams, which haverenovated low-income homes in three counties. We're working with local elementary schoolswith an In-School Banking Program that teacheschildren about banking and finances in a realworld atmosphere. Students serve as tellers, collecting deposits and settling accounts. Notonly does the program reinforce math skills, itprovides children responsibility for handlingmoney and emphasizes the importance ofsaving.
