Yard Maintenance in a DroughtDrought. Not a word we want to hear. Unfortunately, based on computer models, forecasters are saying prepare for another year of drought.

Colorado Springs Utilities is proposing to City Council that watering of lawns be restricted to two days a week starting in April. Plus, there will probably be an increase in the rate for excessive use by the customer.

What is the proper way to take care of our lawn, plants and trees if we do have another drought? Soil throughout our area varies, as does the types of grass, plants and trees. To find out what is best for landscaping in your area, contact a landscaper with a proven track record and/or a trusted garden center.

Mike Estes of Rick’s Garden Center shares some general things to think about before you start working on your yard:

What kind of fertilizer should you use? Organic balanced fertilizer is best because it encourages root growth. Organic fertilizer feeds the soil and slowly releases nutrients to the grass, while synthetic fertilizer causes fast growth and a need for more water.

How tall should you keep the grass? Taller grass, such as 3 inches, will shade the root system, store carbohydrates and maximize photosynthesis.

What amount of water is needed? If it hasn’t rained, water about ½ inch. Colorado Springs Utilities is planning on pro-viding its customers with the ability to monitor the amount of water they are using. Using such a tool could help prevent you from being charged the higher rate. This could be a big money-saver. Also, the application of soil activators will maxi-mize the water applied because it helps the soil hold moisture.

When should you water? Set your sprinkler system timer to go on at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. This will lessen the amount of evapo-ration. The sun usually comes out shortly thereafter to warm the grass. Watering at night can chill the blades and make them more susceptible to fungus.

Does your lawn mower have a mulching capacity? The finely chopped clippings can go deep inside the soil surface, return-ing a high percentage of the fertilizer, if you are not cutting a lot off the blades at one time. It is recommended to cut 1/3 of the height of the blade at a time. Cutting off too much at one time might build up thatch. Plus, keep the blades sharp so they do not tear the grass.

Does your yard need aerating? Yes. Loosening up the com-pacted soil helps hold moisture. Aerate in March or April. At that time, over seed areas that need it.

Water will continue to be precious. Now is the time to start maintenance on your lawn. Don’t wait to see how bad the drought will be.

Building Self-Con-fidence in Children, One Humongous Grin at a Time Want to give your child the best start in life? That extra edge that will help them become well-rounded, well-adjusted adults? Research suggests that creative physical activity may be the key to fostering confident, successful kids. In other words, Serious Fun provides some serious benefits.

At The Little Gym of Colorado Springs, we take a holistic “Three-Dimensional Learning” approach to skill development. This philosophy is based on three core tenets: “Get Moving” to foster flexibility, strength, balance and coordination; “Brain Boost” to nurture lis-tening skills, concentration and decision making; and “Citizen Kid” to promote sharing, teamwork, coopera-tion and leadership abilities.

We’re not the only ones who see the value of this approach. Major studies note the benefits of a whole child approach to physical activity. Research has shown that:

• Children make judgments about their motor skill abilities at an early age, which may affect their willingness to take on new physical challenges as they get older.

• Structured and repetitive physical activities can improve a child’s processing speed, working memory, self-control and strategic decision-making ability.

• Early participation in structured group activities that allow children to cultivate skills such as initia-tive, teamwork, and emotional regulation, can help children more effectively take on leadership roles in childhood and later life.

The Little Gym is Fun, Seriously. Our classes are designed to bring out loads of giggles and grins. But make no mistake, there is some serious development going on. It all adds up to a promise of confidence you can feel confident in.

Most recently, my musings around friendships, career, and family have brought im-ages of my personal stories dancing through life. Our experiences are our stories to be shared or kept tucked away in our memories.

Dinner with a long time friend spurred my memory of our being pregnant at the same time. As newlyweds, we shared many commonalities. But at dinner the other night, I realized how long ago our mutual stories occurred and how little we had in common today. Our sons, now nearly forty years old, are busy generating their own stories while this friend and I can only reflect on the past. Like many young married couples, we shared dinners, played cards while the kids slept on the floor, babysat for each other, and occasionally shared an event together without the kids. Although our friendship has sustained time and distance, we have precious little time together and our story in the future will be limited.

Another friend, also a mother of twin sons, said something very poignant to me – “Make new friends but keep the old; one is silver, the other gold.” Harkening back to being a Girl Scout is another part of my story of who I am today. This friend (also a Girl Scout) grew up as an only child. She once shared with me the memories of her child-hood were of many friends and activities; but, once she entered her home, she knew it would be quiet and orderly.

I grew up with an older sister and brother as well as a younger sister. Our home was always full and noisy. Four children with their assorted friends and unusual pets can make for chaos. In reflection on those growing up years, I believe they prepared me for having twins followed by a singleton in two years – all boys! My home was also filled with activity, boys, pets, music, and fun.

When I moved to Colorado Springs and learned to play bridge, I enjoyed hosting lun-cheons for friends with card tables in various rooms. At one of these parties, our cat had just had kittens. What I thought was adorable – baby kitties underfoot – appalled one woman. Her quiet life with one adult son (and no pets) did not prepare her for an experience in my household.

How I grew up, who I married, how our boys were raised and the work I did along the way have all become chapters in my story. This life, where I have played many roles – daughter, granddaughter, sister, mother, aunt, and friend – are my historical docu-mentation of a life. And life, lives actually, would not be vibrant without joy and sorrow; laughter and tears; love and hate; and some messiness along the way.

My story is not finished. I am still learning, loving, and writing. I am a grandmother now and sharing my stories with a new audience. The telling of our stories becomes a legacy for the generations to follow. Whether factual or embellished, our memories cre-ate the threads to quilt our lives together and be cherished by those who come after us.

Kathy Allen continues to live, work, and love in Colorado Springs. She can be reached at [email protected].

My Life is a Stage

“All the world‘s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts.” - William Shakespeare

Ask the DentistBy dr. andrew hall

Q: My 3-year-old child sucks his thumb. I’ve heard that this can affect his teeth. Should I be concerned?

A: Most children begin sucking their thumb or finger from a very young age. Sucking is a natural reflex for infants, providing a sense of security and contentment. Accord-ing to the American Dental Association, most children stop thumb-sucking on their own between the ages of 2-4. They simply grow out of the habit that is no longer useful to them. If your child continues to suck his thumb when his permanent teeth erupt, it may be time to take action to break the habit.

Q: I recently lost a few teeth and now need to con-sider replacing them. Is it necessary to replace them?

A: There are several problems that can arise from missing some or all of your teeth. First, missing teeth affect your face. Not only is your smile affected, but if you are miss-ing too many teeth, the skin around your mouth won’t be properly supported and can start to sag, aging your appear-ance. Second, missing teeth makes it more difficult to chew food and can even affect your speech. Call my office today to schedule a complimentary implant consultation.
