Market Research I recently created a survey on a website called Survey Monkey in which I thought of different questions related to music magazines which I could ask a sample group in order to gather data which would allow me to make my magazine meet the needs of my target audience. I them e-mailed the survey to numerous people and once all the surveys were completed I looked at the data. In this presentation I have created pie-charts to illustrate the answers I received for each question I asked in the survey. The feedback I have received has allowed to me to have a clear idea in my head as to what the audience expects from the magazine and I can bear all the responses in mind when it comes to designing and creating my magazine.

What aspects of a music magazine do you most like? (i.e. Interviews, Reviews, Crosswords etc.)

This was an open question. I found that the vast majority of the sample said that they liked interviews with artists most. Many people also said that they enjoyed reading reviews of songs/albums. A select few also said that they liked the images most.

OverviewI have found the feedback I received very useful and encouraging:

• For my first question, 31% (the majority) of the sample group said that their favourite genre of music magazine was Rock/Alternative Rock which I am very pleased about because that is the genre of music I wished to base my magazine on initially.

• For the second question, 57% of the sample said they would be willing to pay any price for the magazine. However, considering my target audience is mainly teenagers it would be unwise to charge too much. My main rival would be Kerrang! magazine as it is of a similar genre to my proposed magazine and they charge £2.20, therefore I think it would be wise for me to follow the advice of the sample and sell my magazine between £1.51 and £2; I think a good selling price would be £1.75 as it is in between these margins; by selling it at this price, I could have a competitive advantage.

• Seeing as over half of the sample group (57%) said that they would buy the magazine weekly, that is what I have decided to do. I think that when magazines are brand new, it is very important to create brand awareness and the best way I think that I can do this is buy releasing new issues frequently. Also, looking at Kerrang! they are a weekly magazine and they are a top-selling music magazine.

• The majority of the sample group said that images were the main thing that attracted them to a music magazine which means I will have to pay great attention to detail when taking my own photos. It is important they are well-done in order to attract people to the magazine because after all, the front cover is the first thing people see and it needs to be attractive and offer a good impression.

• Finally, I found that the majority of people liked interviews with artists the most and so I need to ensure that my double page spread is a well thought-out interview as people may judge the magazine by it. Many people also said they liked music reviews so if possible I would like to bring in a brief review of my artist on the double page spread; however, I would prefer to focus on the interview rather than a music review.
