Page 2: Market research

Through using a primary research technique I carried out a survey by asking 10 people 10 different questions to help me in finding my target audience for my music video, finding whether the people enjoy to see much content in their music video and to see if they are interested in the genre of music I have chosen to carry out for my music video. This will also help me to find out whether to create a narrative music video as people may find that more appealing for the video. My results and analysis of them will be shown in this PowerPoint.

The results of my survey came to find that I had a mix of 17/18 year olds. This is likely to the fact that I sent my survey to people in my class so the results came back to be my age group. This is useful as it has enabled me to find that my target audience will be set around the age teens, from this survey I have found I will likely aim towards the 17/18 age group. The use of this primary research technique has been useful for me in finding the age of those I sent the survey to.

The results of my survey have found that the majority of those who answered it are male. This doesn’t necessarily mean that I will focus my music video to just males as that would not be successful, despite these results my music video will be most likely aimed towards a mixed gender as then it will be a much stronger impact especially saying it is more of a mainstream song, it is within the pop genre in many aspects as well as it being dance, therefore aiming for a mixed target audience it is important to bring in as much audience as possible.

The results of question three finding out the repliers employment status is very important to the way I sell my product. The fact that the majority who participated in this survey aren’t employed and only 30% have a job helps a lot as it gives off the thought that the majority won’t be willing to go out and spend their money on CD’s or singles with the song on, this is useful as it will mean that a lot of people will use websites such as YouTube to view music, this will contain the music video and hopefully appeal to the listener a lot more as the video that they see may persuade them to go out and actually buy the single or the album so this response helps me in the way I design the music video.

My survey results show that the majority of people who I asked about their favourite music genre replied with the answer pop. This is a very useful finding as the song that I and my partner have chosen to create a music video for is in the pop genre as well as the dance genre; Avicii’s Hey Brother. This has been useful as it has made it clear that the song and the video will appeal as people enjoy that genre of music. Secondly the other two genres that people said is their favourite is Rock and Rap, this is useful as the secondary song we were going to choose was in fact Eminem, so this has also been useful in the case that the backup song to do would have been a hit as well with the people that answered this survey so this was therefore a very useful discovery whilst carrying out my survey.

This questions result from my survey have been very useful, as finding out what style of music video that people enjoy is actually very significant to creating the video for the song that I and my partner have chosen to go through with. The results found that 40% of the people who answered actually prefer a narrative music video which is in fact exactly the style that we have chosen to do so it is very useful to find that it will be the most enjoyed from the 3 choices. The rest of the results found that both other choices were favoured by the rest of the respondents; these were of course conceptual and performance. It is very typical now of mainstream music videos to use narrative styled videos and create a story in them for the audience to get attached to and make them watch it over and over again, this is useful as in my own opinion I much prefer a narrative styled music video as it makes me like the song more and actually be interested in it.

My research has found that the majority of people would much rather watch music videos on their laptop/computer. This is useful as the studies have actually shown that only 10%of the people who answered prefer to watch music videos on the TV, this is effective for the music video as it means that more people will likely view my piece on YouTube, share it with their friends on sites such as Facebook or Twitter. Meaning that my music video will be viewed a lot more as in my own opinion I will pay more attention to a music video if I am listening to the song on my laptop/computer or my tablet or phone as it makes me watch the video to listen to the song. This will mean that the music video will be viewed a lot more by teens in modern society as they use technology a lot more now and will be more likely to view it on the internet.

Question 7’s results are quite useful to me as I have found that the majority of the people I asked are into the mainstream artists and only a few were less mainstream artists. This is useful as the music video I am doing is on the song made by the artist Avicii who are a mainstream group in the music industry so this questions result has come very useful as it means that the music video I am creating will suit well to the artist that I have chosen.

The results from question 8 on my survey is another vital one, this is because I have found that %80 of the respondents said that they do like to see much content in the music videos they watch. This has come useful to my creation of a music video as me and my partner were planning a narrative music video that contains a lot of content and gives the spectator a story to follow. Therefore the results of this question from my survey have allowed me to focus on making sure that in the music video that I create there is a lot of content for those who are watching it.

Question 9’s results have been very useful to me when deciding how I should produce my music video, as the results show that %50 of those who answered the survey do not actually purchase music in digital format and that only %10 purchase it regularly. These results are useful as it will show that a music video will be more likely to be shown more as people aren’t just going out and buying the music, so this therefore encourages me to make my music video at a much better standard.

Question 10’s results are some of the most useful as they provide evidence that %80 of the people who answered my survey stream music online quite a lot and the other %20 moderately stream it. This was therefore a very useful piece of evidence as it gives the conclusion that people listen to their music on the internet so on websites such as YouTube where the majority of the time you have to watch the music video to actually listen to the song so this means that my music video would be viewed by people looking for the song.

To conclude, my results have come very useful from the survey that people answered and have enabled me to look for things to change in the planning of my music video and add things into it such as more content and keep the narrative interesting as I found that the majority of people preferred a music video with one. Therefore the results that I have received have influenced me to create a greater and more successful music video.
