An increased entry of prime cattle this week which met a similar trade and demand to recent markets. Butcher’s type cattle continue to sell to a premium but are in short supply. Top price per kilo and value was 217p (£1,358) for a 626kg Limousin x steer from Mr W.J.P. Julian of Summercourt purchased by Chris Dale for his Helston Butchers shop. Top Heifer also for Mr W.J.P. Top price and value this week was 123p/kg and £1,000 for a big South Devon cow for Messrs H.M. & L.J. Collins of Port Navas purchased by David King of Exeter. Top dairy cow was a Friesian at 104p/kg for Mr T.A. Wills of St. Erme purchased by David Ellis of Lelant. A Limousin cull bull achieved the overall top price of £1,324 at 124p/kg for Messrs R.D. Richards & Son of Ladock purchased by Mr P. George of St. Levan.

With Royal Cornwall Show this week, store cattle numbers, as is usually the case, are light. Trade for the cattle on offer was firm for both steers and heifers. Top price of the day was £1,030 for a trio of Aberdeen Angus x heifers from Messrs A.A. & D.P. Eddy of St. Erth. They also had the top price steers at £990 for an Aberdeen Angus x and a Welsh Black x. A run of smart South Devon cattle from Messrs R.J. & S.J. Rundle saw top prices for steers at £945 and £900 for heifers.

Other notable prices were a young British Blue cow with Aberdeen Angus calf at foot to £910 and Aberdeen Angus cow and young calf to £800.

Trade has been on a downward spiral nationally since the beginning of the week. High numbers being marketed across the country has seen the seasonal dip in the averages. The lighter weights were less sought after, as reflected in the prices. The premium heavy weights were commanding top money selling to £97.50 for a smart pen of 46.7kg lambs from Mr R. Shazell of St. Columb, purchased by McFaddens Butchers.

Three pens topping the averages at 221p/kg, firstly for 42.3kg Beltex lambs from Mr A. Rowland of Prospidnick, Sithney, bought by Peter Morris Butchers of St. Columb, also for 42.1kg were Texel x lambs from Messrs T.F. & D.J. Crapp of Helston, purchased by J.V. Richards Ltd, Perranwell Station, and thirdly, at 42.4kg were Charollais x lambs from Roberts Enterprises of Garras, Helston, bought by Jaspers of South Petherwin.
