A good entry of prime cattle with a better number of butchers’ type cattle which sold extremely well. Deadweight prices have been reducing in recent weeks but Truro Market trade is remaining firm. Top price of the day at 218p/kg and £1,432 was a 657kg Limousin x steer from Messrs. W.T. Bryant & Sons of St. Martin, with a second Limousin x steer at 217p/kg for Mr. A.M.C. Eddy of St. Erth, both bought by Chris Dale for his Helston Butcher’s Shop. Premium heifer another Limousin x from Messrs. Bryant realising 213p/kg to Messrs. K. & D. McFadden Butchers of St. Just. Top value heifer £1,252 for the 677kg biggest from a run of Charolais x from Miss S.P. Gribble of Lanner purchased by David King of Exeter.

A fair entry of cull cows met an overall firm trade. Well-covered cows, both beef and dairy are selling to a premium. Charolais x cows heading the beef section to a top of 131p/kg for Messrs. R.H. & R.D. Richards of Sparnon Gate purchased by David King of Exeter. Friesians selling to a premium of 122p/kg to Messrs. Rapson of Tavistock from a run for Messrs. C.N. Thomas & Son of St. Wenn who sold their heaviest 804kg cow to a top price of £860 to Trevarthens.

A decent entry of store cattle for this time of year which sold very well with plenty of demand around the ring. Leading steer at £1,000 was a 21 month old South Devon x from Mr. D.G.M. Patton of Coverack with a trio of younger 15 month old South Devons for Messrs. W.S. Gay & Son of St. Allen at £920 apiece, and even younger Charolais x and Simmental x steers from Messrs. A.D. & J.A. Bray of St. Martin at £910. A super pair of Charolais x steers at just eight months old for Mr. K. Bottrell of Newbridge realised £700. Highlight of heifers were an entry of four Limousin cross heifers around 15-16 months, again for Messrs. W.S. Gay & Son of St. Allen, making £830.

Bray of St. Martin saw a Limousin x lead at £435 and a pair of British Blues hit £370 with their best three Blue and Limousin x heifers £260-£265. A month-old Friesian bull for Messrs. L. Wherry & Son of Sancreed selling well at £118. The stirk entry included a run of eight Limousin and British Blue crosses for W.E. Nicholls & Co. of Mylor which saw males to £395 and heifers to £345, averaging £343.

A much better than anticipated trade across the board, with deadweight prices and markets earlier in the week quoting a downward trend. Sandbach of St. Breock purchased by J.V. Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station. A firm leading average of 216p/kg for a fresh pen of Texel x handyweights from Mr. J.D.
