2012 Macadamia Crop Continues Recovery Based on factory receivals by Australian macadamia handlers to the end of May, the mid season forecast for the Australian crop remains at 38,000 tonnes in-shell. Pre-harvest modelling by the Australian Macadamia Society (AMS) and the Department of Agriculture Fisheries & Forestry, Queensland had predicted a crop of 37,070 tonnes in-shell. The Australian Macadamia Handlers Association (AMHA) estimated a crop of around 38,000 tonnes in-shell based on the season and their collective experience. This is a significant improvement on the 2011 crop of 28,500 tonnes in-shell and reflects a recovery towards continued growth. Forecast kernel supply is lower than anticipated with season to date recoveries suggest a kernel yield of around 10,500 tonnes rather than the April forecast of 12,300 tonnes. Quality, however, is excellent with unsound kernel levels the lowest for many years. “Favourable growing conditions and improved on-farm management has seen better consignment quality delivered to handlers” says AMS CEO Jolyon Burnett. “In addition most processors have invested heavily in recent years in improved handling and sorting equipment and this appears to be paying dividends”. A further report will be provided in late August and the final figure for the 2012 crop will be announced by the AMS in late November.
