From the Chamber Office

I know I said it last month but it is true again this month—the more things change the more they stay the same. The Executive Team, along with some recruits are starting the process for a new hire for the Executive Director again. I will still be here filling the seat and am so grateful to have Hannah here 3 days a week.

This is setting up to be a busy month and we are kicking things off with some Ribbon Cuttings, GROW Awards and even a Ground Breaking. Things will kick off on Saturday, October 10th with a Ribbon Cutting for Cuzn Eddyz Campground in Merna. Then on the 16th we’ll be welcoming Lt. Governor Mike Foley and our State Representative Matt Williams to town for a GROW Award at

Gary’s Super Foods, Ribbon Cuttings at Christian Life Center, Broken Bow Floral and Plant Studio and Click Family Healthcare as well as a little collaboration with Custer Economic Development Corporation as they break ground on their housing project.

We are so excited to share “The Chamber Meal Deal” with the community. For just $25 you will get 2 flash frozen steaks, 2 potatoes to bake, a can of vegetables and dinner rolls. You could say it is our version of a Meal Kit for 2. If you would like to order a Meal Deal please call us at the Chamber or seek out one of the Chamber Board Members. There is a contest happening amongst the Board Members who can sell the most tickets. Don’t know who the Board Members are? Check out the last page of this newsletter for the complete list!

Another event that we are excited about is the Annual Sidewalk Spooks and Trunk or Treat Around the Square. We are looking forward to seeing the little ghosts. ghouls and goblins as they take over the Downtown Square on Octo-ber 30th from 2:00 to 5:00ish! Of course, there will be a few changes this year—we’ll be asking participants to be aware of their space, wear a mask and some of our businesses will be setting up right in front of the business as a Sidewalk Spook. This will save some of the bottle neck in businesses and hopefully keep things flowing smooth! Also we have added an hour on to the time of the event so those littlest trick or treaters can come earlier! You’ll find ser-vice businesses and off the square businesses set up for the Trunk or Treat portion around the Square. One thing we will need some assistance with is Crossing Guards. Since One Box was moved up to Halloween weekend there may be some extra traffic in town and we want to keep all the participants safe! If you can volunteer an hour, 2 or the full 3 to man a stop sign and protecting the kiddos please give us a call at the Chamber Office.

Also this month we will be sending out the SurveyMonkey link for the Annual Voting for the 2021-2023 Board of Directors positions. We have a great group of nominees so far and can’t wait to see how the Chamber Team votes and what our future looks like. We are appreciative of the Board Members who have given their time and talents to our community.

Looks like I better get busy with the events coming up! So looking forward to being out and about in the community in October celebrating all things Broken Bow and Custer County!

New Administrative Assistant

Hello! My name is Hannah Jones and I am so excited about this opportunity to work at the Broken Bow Chamber with Deb!

I have grown up in Broken Bow my whole life and I have always really loved this small town I call home. I am the daughter of Mike and Amber Evans, owners of Evans Feed Co. here in town! Growing up in a family that owns a small business has definitely given me an appreciation for all local businesses and their hard-work!

I also am married to Zac Jones and we have a son, Callum Jones! We live here in town and we absolutely love this community!

I look forward to meeting you all and getting to work with you all!

Stop in to say ‘Hi” on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays when I will be at the front desk!

Welcome New CAPABLE Director

A committee consisting of Custer County superintendents and business leaders selected Jessi Chandler Mason as the Executive Director for CAPABLE (Custer Alliance for Preparing and Advocating for Business, Labor, and Education) beginning in October 2020.

Jessi Chandler Mason comes to CAPABLE from a diverse social work background. She began her social work career in Lincoln, Nebraska working as a women’s advocate at a domestic violence shelter, and eventually transitioned to working with refugees at Lutheran Family Services where she served as both a Health Care Liaison and a Refugee Job Developer. After her return to the area, Jessi has spent the past 7 years working at Central Plains Center for Services in the Education and Training Voucher program serving current and former state wards attending college.

Custer CAPABLE President, Logan Lightfoot, expressed the organization’s excitement to welcome Mrs. Mason as Executive Director. “We are thrilled to have Jessi join our team. Like all of our member schools and businesses, she is very passionate about the success of Custer County, and committed to the development of area students.”

When asked about the opportunity to serve as the executive director for CAPABLE, she

was very optimistic. “I graciously accept this opportunity and I am beyond thrilled to begin my work

with CAPABLE. This position combines my passion for growing and bettering our rural communities and enhancing learning opportunities for area students. I look forward to getting to know the students and businesses of Custer County and developing meaningful relationships and partnerships.”
