Market dynamics – European market

Markets are calm following the general economic trend; stocks for the autumn winter season are being built but the switch between summer and winter season is not complete yet. Market operators are working in a very mixed context as temperatures have been high in Southern Europe (where local season products were still in stock) and relatively low in central Europe. Avocado – The supply is historically low as the season from Peru and RSA is over and Chilean volumes (expected to be far above average) are increasing slowly. In a growing demand context, prices have considerably increased in the hass segment (50% over the last 2 years average) while, with the Israeli ettinger season in full development, tended down in the green segment but maintained a considerable level. Berries – Blueberries from Argentina, Chile (104.000 tons, +40% over last year to all markets), Uruguay (2.500 tons in comparison to last year when 1.700 tons were exported) and Peru (4.000 tons this year, 30% to Europe) are on the market; Chilean frosts are reported to have hit one area only and will probably affect no more than 10-15% of the product volumes. Grapes - High prices for the first grapes from Brazil (15,00-20,00 Euro/ctn in comparison to 11,50-12,50 Euro/ctn last year); according to the initial estimates South Africa’s table grape crop for the 2014-15 season is shaping up between 4-7% in comparison to the last campaign while Peru should see a 15% increase in production. Kiwi – Early end of the New Zealandese campaign; polemics are ongoing about the anticipated fruit collection in Italy where the

kiwifruit production will slightly rise (2%) and overseas exports started in week 43. Ginger – Ginger from Peru is on the market; prices for all origins continue strongly above the average.

Lime – The market is overstocked with low prices for all origins, slightly higher for Mexico; the price range has been enormous (2,50-6,50 Euro/ctn) with better quotations only for sizes 48-54’; prices are picking up in week 43 because the supply from Brazil is small and expected to decrease further in the coming weeks due to the droughts.

Mango – High prices for mango in a traditionally small-supply period context: the Israeli season closed earlier than usual because big volumes have been sent to Russia following the ban and the supply from Brazil (cold snaps in June-July) and Spain (firm prices above 2 Euro/kg) is not sufficient. Prices are considerably above the average (10,00 Euro/ctn) and rocketed for air-freighted fruits (30,00 Euro for the 6 kg carton). Peru and Ecuador will enter the market in week 47 with smaller quantities in comparison to last year (-30/40% and -20/30% respectively) due to alternate bearing and unfavourable weather conditions (El Nino). Melons – Good start for the Brazilian season, with exports 3% above the same period last year and good market prices (particularly in the United Kingdom) over last year level. Nashi – High prices for nashi pears: the market is undersupplied as China is selling big volumes to Russia pending the ban.

the market are not big, the prices effectively obtained are rarely close those proposed by importers and distributors. The market is very sensible to available volumes and multiple’s promotions, depending on the country considered; small sizes have been missing and obtained prices above the average.

Pomegranate – The season is developing for pomwonderful from Israel, preferred to the Turkish fruit (which presented residues problems in some cases) and the Spanish one (whose season has just started).

Passion fruit – The shortage is almost over in some countries (Belgium and the Netherlands) and still perceived in others (Germany) and prices are getting back to normal in practically all markets; volumes, which have been near to zero especially for Zimbabwe, are increasing for all origins with

quality problems for the products from Colombia (mrls).

Stone fruits – Air-freighted stone fruits from RSA are on the market; export volumes are forecasted to be record year-on year (+15% over last year volumes for nectarines and +10% for peaches and plums, while apricots should see a -1% drop) but if it has to be considered that last year volumes weren’t large. With the season for local products ended and new season crops not fully available, the small supply produced high prices for some products (e.g. avocado and mango) but low prices have been registered for most products especially vegetables (following to the Russian ban) as well as the last Southern Hemisphere apples, and pears.
