Market dynamics – European market, week 3

Markets have been very calm, following the general economic trend which is slowly and hardly recovering. Sales proved quite satisfactory during the festivities and low, as usual, afterwards confirming the trend registered in the past years. The prices of many products, notably grapes, beans, berries and stone fruits decreased at the beginning of the New Year, while a reduced number of items in stocks, in a context of lower concurrence, lead to price increases for other less common tropical fruits. Cold temperatures have further contributed to keep the demand at very low levels. Markets are now favourable for avocado and pineapple but only because of small supply volumes and not for a particularly active demand.

Avocado – Available volumes are limited and prices stand above average: while the arrivals from Chile are tending down remaining above last year level and Mexico is concentrating on the US market, the supply from Israel and Spain have been relatively small because of the weather conditions (vessels delays) and since the harvest was postponed during the festivity period. Promotions at very low prices at the retail level and small production volumes in the Mediterranean area have further diminished stocks. Prices could further increase in both the hass and green segment.

Ginger – New arrivals from China are on the market, with considerable price difference between the old and the new crop; the first arrivals from Peru obtain higher prices in comparison to other origins.

Grapes – The market is under pressure as the supply is heavy, particularly from South Africa and Namibia which are also experiencing quality problems. The demand is nevertheless good and allowed maintaining good prices which tended to decrease after the New Year but are now satisfactory again even though with large price range and the necessity to re-pack because of the quality problems in some cases.

Lime – Prices have been very low falling to 4,00 Euro/ctn and below because of low demand and big availabilities. While the arrivals from Brazil are stable, the volumes supplied from Mexico are tending to decrease due to the rains which affected 20-30% of the orchards in the Colima state delaying harvest considerably. The price difference between the Brazilian and Mexican fruits has increased and the quotations for small sizes in general are considerably low.

Lychees – Prices decreased after the festivities but showed firmer in comparison to last year

remaining in most cases above 2,00 Euro/kg; this might be explained by an increasingly rational distribution of the export volumes, which says much about the efforts put in place at the sector level in the last years.

Melons – The first arrivals from Central America (Costa Rica and Honduras) are on the market and fetch higher prices in comparison to the Brazilian fruits.

Mango – With Brazil, Ecuador and Peru on the market at the same time and a steady demand prices are very low: quotations stand just on average for all origins and varieties, below average for small sizes. Kent from Peru obtains slightly higher prices as well as air-freighted kent whose volumes are, nevertheless, small.

Pineapple – Prices decreased straight after Christmas as the fruit has been promoted in view of clearing stocks, generating low quotations and very large price ranges. The market showed quite irregular, with lots of old fruits available and very flexible prices outside the programs. With small supply volumes in the first weeks of the year, nevertheless, prices have subsequently considerably increased and stand now above average. The market might remain undersupplied in the coming weeks.

The temperatures above average registered in the last part of 2015 (October-December) turned heavy the market for season fruits (apples, oranges, kiwi and pears) which may in part contribute to explain the low demand for tropical and off-season fruits.

The market operators are now preparing for the Fruit Logistic Fair in Berlin which will as usual provide the guidelines for the horticultural sector in Europe along the year.
