New City Leaders

May is ‘Better Speech and Hearing Month’

MCP has 15 speech-language pathologists on-staff who work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat communication and swallowing disorders in infants, adolescents, and adults.

Our SLPs perform their work in the NICU, as well as in inpatient rehab, acute care, and outpatient services.

Patients tend to be most excited to see an SLP when their swal-lowing function is being reassessed, to see whether it is possible to safely resume eating after an illness, injury, neurological issue, or intubation.

SLPs also work with patients who have undergone tracheosto-mies or laryngectomies, to assist them in learning how to communi-cate using alternative or augmentative devices.

The work of a speech-language pathologist is extremely reward-ing, as it involves helping patients get back to normal life—eating, speaking, and socializing as they did before their hospitalization.

Med-Surg Director Brings Record of AccomplishmentPlease welcome A.J. Stephens, who has taken up the reins as our new Director of Med-Surg and Oncolo-gy Services.

A.J. comes to us from Methodist Healthcare System, where he served as the Cardiology nurse-manager. Under his leadership, signifi cant gains were made in patient experience and employee engagement, and the department became one of Methodist’s top performers on both of those metrics. It also reported some of the strongest quality outcomes in the organization.

A.J. is board-certifi ed by the American Nurse Credentialing Center in Med-Surg Nursing, and as an Advanced Nurse-Executive. He holds a doctorate in Nursing Practice with an Executive Leadership specialization from Texas Tech University. A.J. also earned an MBA from Ashford University. His BSN is from Eastern New Mexico University.

A native of Hobbs, N.M., A.J. now makes his home in Dallas. His recreational interests include hiking, traveling, and karaoke.

Veteran Leader Expands RoleWendy Davis-Cooper, Director of Revenue Integrity and a 31-year veteran of MCP, has added to her portfolio of responsibilities. She has been named Co-Ethics and Compliance Offi cer and Privacy Offi cer for both Medical City Plano and Medical City Frisco.

Originally from Horsehead, N.Y., Wendy resides in Frisco with husband, Ron. Together, they have four children and 10 grandchildren. They enjoy traveling, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Refer any questions regarding patient privacy, ethics, or compliance, to Wendy at 972-519-1152 or [email protected].

Laboratory Manager Continues to Climb Career LadderCongratulations to William Lin, who has been promoted to Laboratory Manager.

William fi rst came to work at Medical City Plano in 2009. His introduction to MCP had come the pre-vious year, when he served a clinical rotation here while still an undergraduate at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Since then, William has served the Laboratory in a number of capacities, including night-shift technolo-gist, evening-shift supervisor, and chemistry-section supervisor, and supervisor at Medical City Frisco.

Last year, William was awarded a master’s degree in Clinical Practice Management from Texas Tech University. In 2015, he completed the HCA North Texas Division Emerging Leadership Program. He has also served as a member of the Employee Advisory Group, and as his department’s champion for the Hope Fund.

A native of Singapore, William now lives in Lewisville. For relaxation, he enjoys reading about the latest developments in areas ranging from medicine, robotics, and environmental science, to education, business, and management. He also enjoys cooking, baking, gardening, and likes tackling home-improvement projects.

Prayer

MAY 4 IS THE NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER. It’s a day set aside each year for prayer that seeks the welfare of our nation and our world.

But what is prayer, really? It is a conversation with God. It can be formal with fl owery words selected especially for the occasion, or it can be informal, spoken from the heart as it would be between two friends.

To really understand what prayer is, however, we must fi rst know a little about God. Biblically speaking, God is a personal being. This is critical, because it means that God is a person with whom we can we interact. There are some who see God as an impersonal force, and others who see Him as uncaring and distant. That is not how the Bible describes Him, though.

In the Bible, God is described as omnibenevolent (all-loving). As it relates to prayer, this means that God always desires the best for us because He loves us. God is also all-powerful (omnipotent), meaning that no prayer is beyond His ability to answer (Luke 1:37). He is all-knowing (omniscient). The Bible makes it clear that God knows everything (Psalm 139:2-4; Psalm 147: 4-5; Isaiah 46:10).

God is also wise and holy. He knows what is best for us, as well as what will lead us to holiness rather than sin. God is sovereignty. God is supremely in charge of ev-erything that happens in His universe. Nothing takes Him by surprise and nothing happens in our lives without the knowledge of God, even though we may not always understand His actions or agree with them.

In hearing and responding to our prayers, then, we are assured that God will do so on the basis of the attributes just listed. His personal nature and his love, power, knowledge, wisdom, holiness, and sovereignty all factor into how we will relate to God in prayer, and how He will relate to us.

It is important for us to know what prayer is not. It is not magic. We cannot sum-mon God as though He were a genie, waiting to grant our wishes without regard for our circumstances or the consequences.

Prayer does not make demands. While we can make requests of God in prayer, we dare not make demands. God is the Creator of the universe and does not take orders from us.

Prayer is not a guarantee against suff ering. So what is prayer? Prayer is the language of a relationship with the sovereign Cre-

ator of the Universe. Using it, we humbly communicate, worship, and sincerely seek God’s face, knowing that He hears us, loves us and will respond, though not always in a manner we may expect or desire.

Blessings,Chaplain Garry

Stop the Bleed: May is National Trauma Awareness Month

IN A SPLIT-SECOND, lives can change, whether the cause be a car crash, a tornado, or someone with a gun. Seldom,

if ever, do any of us plan to witness a life-threatening trauma incident, let alone be the victim of one. However, a little basic knowledge, combined with immediate action on the part of a bystander, can determine whether the victim lives or dies.

Why is bleeding a fi nding to which you should pay especially close attention in an emergency? Simply because blood loss can cause death in as little as fi ve minutes. Someone standing or sitting nearby may be the only one capable of making a diff erence. Bystanders with little or no medical training can become lifesavers, thanks to a new program called “Stop the Bleed.”

The “Stop the Bleed” campaign was initiated by a federal interagency workgroup convened by the Department of Homeland Security and The White House. The campaign’s purpose is to empower ordinary citizens to save lives by rais-ing their awareness of simple actions they can take to stop life-threatening bleeding associated with everyday emergencies. The initiative draws on advances made by military medicine, as well as recent breakthroughs in hemorrhage-control research.

In much the same way CPR and automatic defi brillators lowered the incidence of death due to cardiac arrest, increasing numbers of lives are being saved through improved aware-ness of how to stop severe bleeding, together with expanded access to bleeding-control kits.

Please take a moment to get the information and equip yourself with the tools needed to help save lives in the precious moments immediately following an emergency. For more information on “Stop the Bleed” classes, please contact Trauma Outreach Coordinator Jinnifi r Gauerke at Jinnifi [email protected].

The only thing more tragic than a death from bleeding, is a death that could have been prevented.

Vietnamese Nurses Pay Visit to MCP

ON APRIL 5, Medical City Plano welcomed nursing students from Vietnam for a day of

observation and learning. The delegation from Nam Dinh

University of Nursing consisted of the

three students and their instructor. The opportunity to spend a day shadowing MCP nurse-executives was one of the highlights of their week-plus trip to the United States.

The hospital’s objective in hosting the Vietnamese visitors, said Chief Nursing Executive Sandy Haire, was to help ad-vance sharing and cooperation among healthcare providers worldwide. The three visiting nurses are shown with MCP nursing leaders.

May Standard of the Month

Kristen Ulsh (Quality-Sepsis Coordinator) gets an “A” in accountability. Challenged to improve our early sepsis

recognition, she tackled the assignment by training up a cadre of “Sepsis Champions.” Kristen is an amazing resource with a can-do attitude. She is friendly, professional, and organized. You might call her a sepsis “guru.” She has helped us make amazing strides in the reduction of sepsis mortality, with a

corresponding increase in our bundle compliance.

Laura Asbill (ICU Stepdown) has a reputation for setting high standards

and putting her patients fi rst, no matter what it takes. She is also known for her

meticulous follow-through—a practice for which her patients frequently praise her.

When it comes to accountability for the care provided, Laura is a great role model.

“Accountability”

THIS NEW SPOTLIGHT

shines the light on one sta¢ member who is frequently complimented on patient comment cards or letters.

What Does Right Look Like?

Bonny Glenn, RN consistently receives more compliments from patients than any other member of the 5th Floor/Ortho-Trauma staff . She is so genuine at the bedside and really gets to know the people for

whom she cares. Here’s a sampling of recent comments:“Bonny took care of my special-needs brother. She was so understanding of

his needs and has such a big heart.”“Bonny is extremely pleasant. She always goes the extra mile.”“Bonny was my favorite nurse. From the minute she walked into my room,

she talked to me like she had known me forever.”“Bonny was great! She listened and really cared about me as person.”

The 10-Foot Rule

HOSPITALIST SERVICES MANAGER Larry Mager and other MCP staff members helped demonstrate the “10-Foot Rule” in last month’s “Communication Matters” podcast.

Simply making it a rule to smile and greet any person within a 10-foot radius is a great way to ensure we make a positive impression and extend hospitality to patients, visitors, and each other.

Thank you for making “Excellence Always” a daily commitment.

Guardians of the Culture

FOR OUR RECENT EMPLOYEE FORUMS, we adopted the theme “Guardians of the Culture” as one that communicates how important it is to nurture

and protect the things that make Medical City Plano and Medical City Frisco great places to work.

Our workplace culture is a mix of many factors which combine to create an environ-ment that is progressive, supportive, and always striving for excellence.

One of the examples shared during the sessions was our most recent “A” grade for pa-tient safety from The Leapfrog Group. It is largely the result of the steady improvement we continue to make on our quality indicators and core measures. Congratulations to everyone who helped make it possible.

To recap the highlights of the forums, let me review again our three priorities for the near future.

Employee Engagement SurveyYour voice matters. For MCP and MCF to excel as workplaces, we need you to tell us about areas where improvements are needed. Please take the survey, which launches on May 15, to help us find out where we’re doing well and where we could do better. From the survey findings, we’ll create an action plan for the coming year.

See page 6 for a condensed list of hospital-wide actions that were taken as a result of last year’s survey. As you review the list, bear in mind that it doesn’t include the many de-partment-specific action plans that also were implemented throughout the organization.

While you’re at it, check out page 5 to see the array of prizes that await lucky partici-pants in this year’s survey. The earlier you fill out the survey, the better your chances of winning cash and other great giveaways. Here’s hoping it’s you!

Patient ExperiencePatient satisfaction continues to rise, thanks to consistent execution of our “Must Haves”—Hourly Rounding, Post-Discharge Phone Calls, and Nurse-Leader Rounding.

However, it’s important to remember the ‘why’ behind the Must Haves, including in-creased patient safety, better efficiency, and an enhanced personal connection with our patients. Be engaged in your units and departments, to ensure that each patient receives an “Excellence Always” experience.

For examples of this, study this month’s Standard-of-the-Month role models on page 11, and put into practice the 10-Foot Rule—an easy way for all of us to be more consis-tent about extending hospitality and making a positive impression.

GrowthWe are blessed to be in healthcare and to be situated within zip codes that are experienc-ing explosive growth. Recognizing this, HCA has made an extraordinary commitment to capital investment in the coming months and years at both Medical City Plano and Medical City Frisco.

Our good fortune can also be attributed to the hard work of dedicated staff members, and to an exceptional leadership team that continues to raise the bar for excellence and expertise. I hope you agree that it’s an exciting time to be where we are, doing what we do so well.

As we progress through the remainder of 2017, let’s continue to lean in and lift each other up as we act as guardians of our culture. When we do this, we all win. And isn’t it fun to be on a winning team?
