Following 9/11, on each Memorial Day Weekend during worship, I began lifting up the names of the men and women from Louisiana who died while serving their country in the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan. Since that Memorial Day Weekend Sunday in 2001 there have been hundreds of names that have been lifted up and hundreds of families and communities around Louisiana that have been prayed for. This Memorial Day Weekend Sunday (May 25 th ) will be no different. My prayer has always been that the list of soldiers, seamen, airmen, Marines, and Coast Guard will become smaller in the next year. My heart breaks when I research these names. I find out their rank, which armed service they were a part of, their age, the date they died, and where they were killed. I pray that this Memorial Day Weekend Sunday you will join me in honoring these brave men and women who died for our freedom. While serving as the Associate Pastor at First United Methodist Church of Bossier City, I would from time to time be called upon to lead the Bible study/devotion at the weekly United Methodist Men’s breakfast. On that morning I read this verse: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13 - NRSV) That morning almost every man at that breakfast had something to say about this verse. Almost every person in the room, accept for me, was a veteran and most of them had served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War or the first Iraq War. The room was brimming with passion and understanding. Men were giving testimonies about their friends who dove on the grenade to save their lives. There were stories from others whose friends selflessly put their own life in harm’s way to save them. Needless to say the study did not end on time that morning. The discussion continued with men sharing stories after stories with tears falling from their eyes. It was an amazing morning. From that day forward I have a different outlook on Memorial Day the day we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we might have freedom. OPALS—Salute the Military Those Older People with Active Life Styles want to recognize the Military for their May meeting. All active and retired military people, and their spouses, are invited to be our guests on Tuesday, May 27, at 11:30 in the Family Life Worship Center. Please bring a picture or some memento of your military career for us to display, and wear (or bring) whatever you still have of your uniform. We are hoping to hear some “life stories” from couples who have shared the military “way of life,” and how it has enriched their lives. There will be special music and patriotic readings to show our appreciation for the men and women who have committed their time and energy to defending our democracy.

Everyone is invited to join us for this special celebration of the military in our congregation. The meal will be prepared as usual by our “kitchen ladies,” at a cost of $5 for those who are not our special guests. You must make a reservation by May 25 by calling Sandra Upshaw at 318-326-5966. The OPALS meet every 4

th

Tuesday for good fun, food and fellowship – come and enjoy it with us!

The Benton United Methodist Women celebrate the month of May by having special meetings. Our two circles (small groups) meet at special times and places for “pot luck” meals. The Nightingales (evening circle) will have a Salad Supper at the home of Pat Mosher on the third Tuesday, May 20, at 6:00 pm. The Morning Glories (morning circle) have been invited by Sandra Upshaw to the “Big House” in Rocky Mount for a salad luncheon on Wednes-day, May 28. We plan to meet at the church at 11:00 am to car pool to Rocky Mount. Of course, anyone is invited to join either circle for this time of fun and fellowship. These will be the final meetings of the circles until September.

Our quarterly General Meeting will be Tuesday, June 3, at 6:30 pm in the Family Life Worship Center.

We have a mission trip to UMCOR scheduled for June 15-20. We will be working at the UMCOR warehouse in Baldwin, LA, and staying on campus. Anyone who can go is invited—the fee is $210 and is due by May 15. Checks can be made payable to Benton UMC.

The Benton United Methodist Women invite everyone to join us. We have two circles (small groups) that meet monthly from Sep-tember through May. The Nightingales meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Eva Smith Room. The Morning Glories meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 9:30 am in the Pairs and Spares Room. You do not have to join a circle to become a member of the Benton United Methodist Women. Just participate in any of our activities.

Several of our Holy Communion cloths have been misplaced. If you have taken them home to wash or mend them, it is greatly appreciated, but please return them as they are greatly needed. All of them are white, one has a beautiful embroidery of grapes and wheat, two are a 36” square which we use to cover the Communion table. If you’ve seen these cloths or have any information, please let Rev. Cheryl know at 965-0178.

NOTICE

In John 15:13 and also in this verse: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. ‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.’” (John 10:10-11), Jesus is foreshadowing his sacrificial death on Calvary. We are still in the fifty days of the Easter Season. Easter season begins on Easter Sunday and concludes on Pentecost Sunday. Our focus in worship will remain on the power of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Through the power of God’s love found ultimately in Jesus, Jesus bled and died for us so that our sin is no longer held against us. Jesus loved us enough to call us friends and he said that greater love have no one than to lay down their life for a friend!

Happy Easter! And Happy Memorial Day!

Grace and peace, Rev. Dr. Danny Gleason Senior Pastor

Coming Wednesday Evenings in June!

Sunday School classes compete against each other using their collective knowledge of the Bible. Each week's champion will compete in the Final Bible Challenge at the end of the month. It is a great time of fellowship, learning and testing our knowledge of God's Word!

My goodness – our Beach BUMS do stay active! We have made many teacher treats for our Footprints in the Sand ministry. We often do this activity on Sunday evenings but have squeezed a few in on Wednesday nights as needed. Our teachers at Legacy, Benton Elementary, and Benton Middle truly appreciate our kind thoughts!

Lent and Easter were also very busy times! During Lent, we did various activities to remind us of the meaning of Lenten season. One particularly exciting and eventful evening included making our own pretzels!

We discussed the following traditions –

According to pretzel maker Snyder’s of Hanover, a young monk in the early 600s in Italy was preparing a special Lenten bread of water, flour and salt. To remind his brother monks that Lent was a time of prayer, he rolled the bread dough in strips and then shaped each strip in the form of crossed arms, mimicking the then popular prayer position of folding one’s arms over each other on the chest. The bread was then baked as a soft bread, just like the big soft pretzels one can find today.(To be fair, some traditions date the story to even the 300s.)

Because these breads were shaped into the form of crossed arms, they were called bracellae, the Latin word for "little arms." From this word, the Germans derived the word bretzel which has since mutated to the familiar word pretzel.

Another possibility for the origins of the word pretzel is that the young monk gave these breads to children as a reward when they could recite their prayers. The Latin word pretiola means "little reward," from which pretzel could also be reasonably derived.

Easter 2014!

Our Easter Egg Hunt was amazing! Over 200 kids and parents joined us for cotton candy, snow cones, an amazing photo booth, hot dogs, cow train rides, face painting, bouncy houses, and of course, over 1000 Easter eggs! We gave away $300 in gift cards over the Easter weekend!

Congrats to Ethan Bamburg ($100 to Walmart) and Ethan Miller’s mom ($100 to Academy Sports).

We were so excited to celebrate

the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Please bring me a copy of your sports schedule so I can come out to one of your games. I know that many of you are playing baseball, softball, and soccer. I can hardly wait to see you starring in your favorite sport!

Until next time, let your BEACH BUMS light shine!

COMING UP IN JUNE! We are looking forward to so many exciting activities as school ends and summer begins! Promotion Sunday is just around the corner! Our third and fourth graders will receive their Bibles. VBS will be here before we know it – and our theme is Weird Animals. From the Nursery Greetings from the nursery! Spring is in the air and warm weather is here to stay! The nursery is available on Sunday mornings for both early and late worship services and Sunday school. It's also available on Wednesday evenings during the bible study hour. The nursery cares for children through 3 years of age. Children ages 4 and older are able to attend children's church on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. During the Sunday school hour, the Early Christian awareness curriculum (ECA) is taught by Holly Doyal. It is a must see! Holly uses the 5 senses plus music, art and crafts to make a positive and secure learning experience for our children. The nursery wouldn't be possible without Ms. Megan and Ms. Jamie who I am forever grateful for. Thank you for your smiling faces and loving hands that care for our babies.

Letters of Love Help us support and encourage our confirmation class by writing letters of love and encouragement to each of our confirmation students. Let these special young people know that their church family loves them and continues to pray for them as they grow in faith. It is one thing to hear someone tell you that he or she cares for you, however, when it is in written word, it can be read repeatedly. At a previous church we attended, we began this project and just last week a former confirmand’s parent told me that she entered her daughter’s room recently after they had received news about her father having cancer and she discovered her daughter surrounded by the letters from her church family that she had received at her confirmation 4 years earlier. She had realized then how much the letters were a source of comfort and strength for her daughter. There is a bag for each confirmation student in the prayer room upstairs in the Family Life Worship Center. Please place your letters in each student’s assigned bag during the month of May. Our students will be confirmed on Pentecost Sunday – June 8th.

Confirmation students include: Caitlin Bamburg, Ethan Crites, Emily Cox, Cade Gaydon,

Avery Hine, Trey Nichols, Abbie Rutledge, Colton Sessions, Anna Clare Toms, Connor Toms, and Walker Wise

Aaron Matthew Owens Baptism

Aaron Matthew Owens was baptized Sunday, April 27, 2014. Aaron was born October 22, 2013 at Highland Hospital, Shreveport, LA. His proud parents are Anna Lauren and Matthew James Owens. Aaron Matthew has a four-year-old brother named Caiden Joel. Grandparents are Chris and Dana Cherry and Aunt Hannah Cherry.

Congratulations on the baptism of your son and we welcome him into our flock and looking

forward to watching him grow in his faith.

Something to Think About...

Trust me and don't be afraid. Many things feel out of

control. Your routines are not running smoothly. You tend

to feel more secure when your life is predictable. Let Me lead

you to the rock that is higher than you and your

circumstances. Take refuge in the shelter of My wings,

where you are absolutely secure.

When you are shaken out of your comfortable routines, grip

My hand tightly and look for growth opportunities. Instead

of bemoaning the loss of your comfort, accept the challenge

of something new. I lead you on from glory to glory, making

you fit for My kingdom. Say yes to the ways I work in your

life. Trust Me and don't be afraid.

TALKING WITH GOD IN OLD AGE by Missy Buchanan THIS IS A SMALL BOOK OF MEDITATIONS AND PSALMS WRITTEN BY MISSY BUCHANAN WHO BECAME INVOLVED WITH OLDER ADULTS AFTER BEING A CAREGIVER FOR HER PARENTS IN THEIR LAST YEARS.

THIS BOOK SPEAKS TO SENIORS ABOUT THE MANY PROBLEMS OF AGING AND ALSO TO CAREGIVERS TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THE THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS OF THE ELDERLY. THERE ARE 94 ONE OR TWO PAGE STORIES FROM OLDER ADULTS THAT SHARE THE TOUGH PROBLEMS OF AGING AND THEIR NEED TO CONNECT WITH THE WISDOM FOUND IN THE PSALMS.

ONE OF THE PROBLEMS THE AUTHOR ADDRESSES IS FRUGALITY AND WONDERING IF YOU WILL OUTLAST YOUR MONEY—HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD? YOU DON’T WANT TO BE A BURDEN ON OTHERS. SHE ASKS GOD TO HELP HER BE WISE AND NOT OBSESSED WITH MONEY. PSALM 39:4-5 REMINDS HER THAT ONLY GOD KNOWS THE LENGTH OF HER LIFE AND HE ALONE IS TRUSTWORTHY.

ANOTHER CHAPTER DEALS WITH UNENDING PAIN AND WONDERING IF GOD HAS FORGOTTEN YOU. SHE ASKS HIM TO COMFORT AND HAVE MERCY ON HER BRITTLE OLD BONES THAT ROB HER OF JOY. THE ANSWER IS FOUND IN PSALM 6:2-4. GOD WILL DELIVER AND SAVE HER BECAUSE OF HIS UNFAILING LOVE.

SOME OF THE CHAPTERS ARE HUMOROUS SUCH AS: “THICK ANKLES AND VARICOSE VEINS” AND “REAL PERSONS ON THE PHONE” WHICH MOST OF US CAN RELATE TO. SHE REMINDS US IN PSALM 18:24: THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HAS MADE; LET US REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT.

WE ALL GET FRUSTRATED AT TIMES ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO DO THE THINGS WE ONCE COULD WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER. THE PSALMS GIVE US CLEAR MESSAGES OF FAITH, LOVE, AND GRACE THAT OFFER US COMFORT AND COMPASSION. THESE MEDITATIONS GIVE US INSIGHTS INTO HOW WE CAN USE THEM TO BETTER COPE WITH THIS PERIOD OF OUR LIFE.

THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN IN LARGE PRINT AND CAN BE EASILY READ AND ENJOYED.

Rita Crosby is the servant of the month for Benton United Methodist Church! What a blessing she is to our congregation. Whether she is singing in the 8:30 am Chancel Choir or leading weekly worship for the Benton United Methodist Daycare, Rita loves what she is doing. Rita serves alongside her husband Mark as they deliver soup to homebound elderly with our Souper Saturday program on the last Sunday of every month. Rita teaches our Kindergarten-First Grade Sunday School with the help of Mark as well. Rita is a prayer warrior and is constantly sharing prayers and prayer updates with our Prayer Ministry that meets on Tuesday mornings at 9:00 am. Rita’s heart is for the Lord and everything that she does flows out of her love for Christ. Several years ago when Mark and Rita’s son Mark David was tragically killed by a drunk driver, Rita could not rest until she was able to let the young man who was the drunk driver know that she forgave him. The mission trailer that sits behind the Family Life Worship Center was given by Mark and Rita in memory of their “Little Drummer Boy” Mark David. The trailer is used jointly by the church and the Benton High School Band. Pastor Danny says, “If we had more people like Rita Crosby, the world would be a much better place!” Amen to that!
