Knowing the Truth: Six Evidences of a Believer’s Salvation 1 John 4:7-21

1 John 4:7-21, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”

1. A believer loves one another. (7,8) 1 John 4:7, John says “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.”

John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

1 John 1:8, “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

Matthew 22:37-39, “ And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”

• How are you doing with loving others in general? ______________________________ • How are you at loving others with that AGAPE, sacrificial, love? __________________ • Is there a person you are struggling to love? If so, what can you do to overcome this

struggle and love them? _________________________________________________

2. A believer accepts the sacrifice of Jesus. (9,10) 1 John 4:9, “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.”

Romans 5:8, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

1 John 4:10, “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

• Have you truly accepted the sacrifice of Jesus for taking away all of your sins? If not, what’s keeping you from doing so? _________________________________________

3. A believer confesses that Jesus is the Son of God. (14,15)

1 John 4:14,15, “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.”

• Is Christmas just a day about presents or do you celebrate that Jesus did come to this earth to save you? ______________________________________________________

• Do you confess that Jesus is the Son of God to others? If not, why not? ____________ ______________________________________________________________________

4. A believer demonstrates love by actions. (11) 1 John 4:11, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.”

• Do you only show love and encouragement at Christmas time or is it all through the year? ________________________________________________________________

• Who is God calling you to love and encourage right now? _______________________ • Do you demonstrate to others by your actions that you are a believer? _____________ • Are you one of the “others” in the story of the man in the pit or are you like Jesus, by

being willing to help the person out of the pit? ________________________________

5. A believer shows perfected love by the Holy Spirit. (12-13; 17-18) 1 John 4:12-13, “No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.”

Romans 8:16, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,”.

Galatians 5:22, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love…”

1 John 4:17-18, “By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”

• Does the Holy Spirit bear witness that you are a child of God? ___________________ • What are you fearful of? _________________________________________________ • Is God’s love being perfected in you so that you are not fearful? If not, what needs to

happen in your life? _____________________________________________________ • Are you afraid of the Day of Judgement? If so, what needs to happen for this to

change? ______________________________________________________________

6. A believer loves others because of God’s love. (19-21) 1 John 4:19, “We love because he first loved us.”

1 John 4:20-21, “If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”

• Is there someone that you hate? If so, take time to ask God to remove that hate and to help you to love that person. If the hate doesn’t go away, you probably are not saved, but you can be if you repent of your sins and trust in Christ by faith. _______________

Think About It: • After looking at these six evidences are they actually evident in your life to confirm that

you are a believer? If not, what needs to happen? _____________________________ • Because of your love for others, who are some people you plan to invite to church this

month and to our Christmas Eve service at 5pm? ______________________________
