About the AuthorM ark Twain was the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens. He was born on 30 November 1835 in Florida, Missouri, but when he was four years old, he moved with his family to Hannibal, Missouri, a town on the Mississippi River.

In 1861, Mark Twain had to leave Hannibal because of the start of the Civil War. Four years later, the writer had his first literary success when several new spapers p u b l ish e d his sh o r t s tory “Jim Smiley and his Ju m p in g F rog .” The story was also in c lu d ed in his first book, The Celebrated Jum ping Frog o f Calaveras County and other Sketches (1867).

In 1870 Mark Twain married Olivia Langdon and a year later the couple moved to Hartford, Connecticut, where they lived for the next twenty years. It was during this period tha t Twain published his best-known

works. These include The Adventures o f Tom Sawyer (1876) and Life on the M ississippi (1883). Both of these novels were in fluenced by the au thors childhood experiences in Missouri. Two other historical novels w e re a lso p u b l i s h e d : T h e P r in c e a n d th e P a u p er ( 1 8 8 1 ) a n d A Connecticut Yankee in King A rthurs Court (1£>89).

Considered by many to be his masterpiece, Adventures o f Huckleberry Finn (1884) was also published during these years. A sequel 1 to The Adventures o f Tom Sawyer, this novel is told from the point of view of its protagonist, Huckleberry Finn. The character of Huckleberry is based on a boy Twain knew du r in g his ch i ld h o o d in H an n ib a l . T he book is extraordinary for its vivid portrayal of H uck and of life on the river during the author s times.

Loved by both young and old, M ark Twain’s novels and short stories reflect the good and the bad in hum an nature. Filled with humor, but also sadness, his works com m unica te both the joy and difficulties of hum an experience.

M ark Twain died on 21 April 1910 in Redding, C onnec t icu t . He was seventy-four years old.

Soon the s team b o a t got close to the island. I saw people I knew on th e boat: Tom Sawyer, his A u n t Polly, my fa th e r and Judge Thatcher. The boat w ent a round Jackson’s Island, then up the river and back to the town. I w aited until I knew I was OK before I decided to ca tch some fish for breakfast.

By the end of the day, I s tarted to feel a little sad because nobody was on the island with me. T hree days and nights passed in the same way. I fished, looked for fruit, and looked a round the island.

Early in the m orning on the fourth day, I w ent into the woods with my gun. I walked on the leaves and, suddenly, my hear t jum ped! O n the ground was a man. He was sleeping and had a b la n k e t1 over his head. It was alm ost daylight. I kept my eyes on him. Soon, he woke up and threw the blanket off his head.

Slavery in North America in the 1800sA slave m u s t w o rk very h a r d fo r someone for no money. Today there are very few countries in the world where slavery is still allowed, but in the past it was very common in many countries in the world. W hen we think of slavery, we o f te n t h i n k o f th e s lav es in th e southern states of the USA during the 1800s.

The colonists who moved to America needed a lot of people to work on their land. O ther colonists did not w ant to do this work, and the owners also did n o t w a n t to pay p e o p le . So s laves , mainly from Africa, were brought to the country.

The slaves traveled on over-crowded 1 ships and many died during the journey. British merchants 2 made a lot of money from selling the slaves to the American colonists. O nce the slaves arrived in America, slave traders took them to markets, where they were bought and sold.

The slaves had to work very hard and were often punished. Many slaves died because of the horrible way they were treated. Another very sa<3 thing was that slaves were often separated from their families. O ften mothers, fathers and children went to different states.

Because of their terrible lives many slaves tried to run away. A secret

system called the Underground Railroad 1 was established by people who were against slavery. These people, called “Abolitionists,” helped runaway slaves by giving them food and places to hide. As a result many slaves escaped to the northern states and Canada.

The differences of opinion about slavery in the North and the South was one of the reasons for the American Civil War, which began in 1861. The war lasted four years and caused many problems even after it ended. The war started because some sou thern states tried to separate from the Union. the war to try to save the Union, but freeing the slaves became important during the war.

In 1863, President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This docum ent stated that all slaves in the southern states were free. Lincoln knew he had to wait until he won the war, but the Proclamation told the South that the end of slavery was near.

The Civil War ended in 1865. The 13th A m endm ent was passed the sam e y ea r th e w ar e n d e d . T h e a m e n d m e n t m a d e s lavery il lega l th ro u g h o u t th e U n ite d S ta te s . This made discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin illegal. A lot of people, especially in the South, protested against this new law and there was a lot of violence. During the 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement with some of the im portant people connected to it, such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, became very important in improving the rights of all African-Americans.
