DURING a joint operation, theMountain Rise SAPS arrestedtwo suspects in Cinderella

Park for thepossessionofmarijuana.Captain Gay Ebrahim, communi-

cations officer for the station, saidthat the crime and intelligence unitconductedacordonandsearchoper-ationduringtheirusualtourofduties.

During their foot patrol, they no-ticed two males acting suspiciously.The unit kept observation on themand eventually followed them into ahouse.

Upon entering the house, one ofthe suspects acted as though he wassleeping. The officers proceeded tosearch the premises with both thesuspectsand,atvariousplaces,foundmarijuanawhich, in total, amountedto50kgswithastreetvalueofapprox-imately R30 000.

The suspects were immediatelyarrested. Investigations continue.

This drug bust took place during ajoint operation which involved allunitsfromtheMountainRiseSAPSin-filtrating their entire precinct, check-ing on the compliance certificates ofsecond hand good stores, liquorlicensesof localpubsandtavernsandgeneral monitoring on their hot spotareas. Thiswasthebeginningof theirfestive season crime operation andwill be ongoing throughout the holi-day period.

after talks were held with their employer,Panzascore DPS JV.

Panzascore is the company responsiblefor implementing and managing the city’spay and display parking management sys-tem.

LastweekMondayandTuesday,thepark-ingassistantsabandonedthecitystreetsandwentstraight to thePanzascoreoffices tode-mand answers on grievances, which theysaid had been previously raised with the

company management, regarding a betterpay.

One of the assistants spoke to theMaritz-burg Feverand said that theyweredemand-ingabasicsalaryastheyonlyget40%oftheirdaily takings.

“Parking in the city costs R5 or R6 perhour. If youdoyourcalculations, youcan im-agine how much I take home each workingday.ItisfarlessthenwhatIusedtoearnwhenI was a car guard. We have families to feedand school fees to pay. We also pay for ourown uniform which costs R200.”

The assistants also complained that theyuse theirownairtime tophone theofficeandthe traffic department when they spot vehi-cleswhoseownershavenotpaidtheparking

MORE than 1000 people in the Msun-duzi area registered during the recentvoter registration weekend.

The general elections will takeplace next year. According to a reportfromtheIndependentElectoralCom-mission (IEC), there were 774 womenand 625 males who registered in theMsunduzi area. KZN had the highestnumber of new registrations with 283407. The provinces with the leastnumber of registrations were theNorthern Cape and North West with

22871 and 45006 respectively.In KZN, a total of 4747 voting sta-

tions were opened and about 9500staff were employed to administerand monitor registration of voters.Neliswa Ngcamu (18) from North-dale, said that she is looking forwardto next year’s elections as she will bevoting for the very first time.

“I feel happy that I will be exercis-ing my right to vote. It is my responsi-bility to make sure that my voice isheard and that is why next year, I willbe making my mark on that ballot pa-per,” she said.

The IEC stated that registration

went smoothly and that the turnoutof voters was pleasing.

“KwaZulu–Natal has increasedvoter registration figures from 4.5million before the weekend to, forthe first since our democracy, 4,8 mil-lion,” said KZN electoral officer,Mawethu Mosery.

He encouraged voters to visit theirmunicipal electoral offices to register.

“Those who cannot travel to visittheir municipal offices can write to usstating their reasons and arrange-ments will be made for commissionstaff to visit them at their homes andregister them,” he said.

I was right there during the Mountain Rise SAPS jointoperation which took place last Friday night.

It all began with us visiting some of the local second–hand good stores in Raisethorpe to check their compli-ance certificates. This was followed by a visit to certainbars in the area to ensure that the owners had a validliquor license.

Our first piece of action was at a bar in Northdalewhen the police caught employees loading full cases ofbeer onto a van, which the SAPS believe was being soldto illegal taverns and shebeens. We witnessed much re-sistancefromaggrievedcustomers,and,forlackofabet-ter word, lame excuses from the owner about whatexactly was going on.

While we left the police to sort out that issue, we weretaken back to the Mountain Rise police station to reportonadrugbustthathadtaken placeafewminutesearlier.

When we arrived, the marijuana was spread out onthe table with the members who were involved in theoperation proudly standing by guarding it.

It took us a few minutes to realize that the suspectswere also in the room, sitting uninterested on the benchbehind us. A sight for sore eyes, I assure you. Anotherinteresting part of the ride along for me was the accidentscene which we had to attend to. It happened by chanceas we were on our way to Sobantu to visit the localtaverns. A minibus had rear–ended a van and was caus-ing a backlog of traffic in the pouring rain. It was thenthat our blue lights were switched on and our officersquicklyandefficiently handledtheincidentandescortedboth vehicles back to the station.

Visiting Dark City was also exciting. A dangerousplace situated deep in Sobantu which I never knew exist-ed before this trip. We visited a few of the taverns inSobantu before our ride along had come to an end.

It was quite an experience getting to see how thepolice try to keep their area safe. Not the usual way mostpeople spend their Friday night but what a fantastic ex-perience. Thank–you Mountain Rise.

THE City Hall’s council chamber was split intwo after opposing views from the ExecutiveCommittee (Exco) members surfaced onwhether or not the Msunduzi Municipalityshouldfinanciallysupportagospelmusicfesti-val to the tune of R90 000.

The festival is organized by Big Fish Musicand it is due to take place on 30 November atWoodburn stadium. Big Fish had approachedthe municipality for R90 000 in financial sup-portasitwillrunapublicawarenesscampaignon HIV/AIDS during the event.

RESIDENTSintheClarendonarea took to the streets dur-ing a Red Socks run last

Friday, standing up for their rightto runandwalk freely andwithoutfear in their area.

Following the attack and rapeof a prominent doctor while shewas jogging on Villers Drive lastweek, community members de-cided to takea standagainst an in-cident suchas this repeating itself.

Margie Henderson, togetherwith her husband Clive, called acommunity meeting on Wednes-day night. Speaking to theMaritz-burg Fever, Henderson said themeeting was a great success withover 100 runners, walkers andgeneral community membersattending.

“There were some good ideasthat came from the meeting andmany workable and practicalsolutions that we, as communitymembers, canput intoplace,” saidHenderson.

She said that they arenot out tosolve the problems of the world,

but simply to address the issuesaffecting their community.

“There are many communitymemberswhoareapatheticaboutthe crime in our area and rely onotherpeople to comeupwith solu-tions.Weare saying that if you livein this community, you need to gowiththecommunityspiritandhelpout where you can,” she said.

Aresident fromthearea,TarynHeathcote, said: “It is just not ac-ceptable and we are not going totake it anymore. I have had staffmugged outside my office andclients mugged down theroad. We have had runnersmugged for their takkies –oneguyneeded20stitches.We all need to standtogether against lowlifeswho prey on innocent,hardworking and givingpeople.”

Henderson said that theprotest was a great success,withpeoplecomingoutin numbers tosupport the cause,despite the heavyrain.

“The spirit was

just fantastic and the momentumfrom themeeting and the run con-tinues.”

She said that therehadbeenanappeal to continue the run onFriday’s as a weekly group runwhere anyone can join to ensurethat there is “safety in numbers.”

To this end, Henderson hasstarted a Joggers, Walkersand Runners group(JOGWA).

“We hope thatthis can spread

to all

running groups, not only in ourarea,butalloverPietermaritzburgbecause it seems as though theluxury of running alone is over,”said Henderson.

Sadly, women and children have to bear thebrunt of a society gone mad.

Where and when do we stand up as a nationand say, enough is enough. The police can onlydo so much. I know many policemen out therewho risk their lives daily, but who cares?

I applaud the community who stood uparound Clarendon and have taken measures to

protect their turf. But I still feel it is not enough.When these criminals feel what their victims

enduredat theirhands, thenonlywill theyknowwhat justice is all about.

I have lost faith in our so called governmentwho are all too eager to line their back pocketsand cry foul when they caught out.

data frommorethan9800adultswithcoronaryartery

disease who underwent atreadmill stress test.Theywere also followed for 11

years to see if they suffered a heartattack,hadundergoneaproceduretoopen blocked heart arteries or haddied from any cause.

“We measured exercise capacity,expressed as metabolic equivalents,

orMETs, from the

patients’ stress test re-sults,” study co–investigator

John McEvoy, a cardiology fellowat the Johns Hopkins UniversitySchool ofMedicine, said in aHopkinsnews release.

The researchers found that eachincrease of oneMET in a person’s ex-ercise capacity “was associated witha 13% reduction in risk of death, re-gardless of whether they had previ-ously had a procedure to open ablocked artery,” McEvoy said.

“In our study, the patients whoweremost fit had a 75% lower risk ofdying from any cause compared tothosewhowereleastfit.Thiswastrueregardlessofwhether thepatienthadprevious stenting or bypass surgeryto open up any blocked arteries,”studyauthorRupertHung,aHopkinsmedical student, said in the news

release.Althoughthestudyfound

anassociation betweengreaterexercise capacityand reduced risk of com-plications from heart dis-ease, it did not prove acause–and–effect rela-tionship.

The findings high-light the importance ofexercise and fitness

for people with cor-onary artery dis-

ease, accord-ing to there-search-

ers.“Our results suggest

that increasing physical fit-ness through cardiac

rehabilitationprogramsandexercisemay be an effective supplement tomedications for preventing compli-cations associated with coronary ar-tery disease,” study senior author Dr.Michael Blaha said in the release.

A simple virus that canmake a copy of itselfover and over again is relatively easy to produce. Even such a simplevirus is dangerous because it will quickly use all availablememory andbring the system to a halt. An evenmore dangerous type of virus is onecapable of transmitting itself across networks and bypassing securitysystems. At theendofthis qualify-ing period,the top12fromeachven-uewere in-vited tocompete in theSkytrack Cup atEpic Karting in Pi-etermaritzburg,the first doublelevel indoor karttrack in South Af-rica.

“The 24 racerswere awardedpoints throughtheir qualifyingposition, andwere brokenup into heats,with four driversineachheat.Thetwist was thatthe morepoints youhad,the furtherback in theheat you start-ed, with driv-ers being
