  • ASM experience from AIS

    • AIS was developed with focus on the position messages and transfer of static

    and dynamic information

    • Binary and text messages were supported, but content was not fully designed

    • US Coast Guard (USCG) and Army Core of Engineers (ACE) put a lot of effort

    into designing Application Specific Messages (ASM) for AIS 8-10 years ago.

    – More difficult when the structure of AIS was settled

    • Learned from AIS development;

    – The work with services started before the structure of VDES was fully settled

    – When designing the content it is important to be aware that the bandwidth in

    VDE is larger than for AIS, but it is still not large!
