Marital Conflict Management Skills, Parenting Style, and Early-onsetConduct Problems: Processes and Pathways

Inaddition, the linkage between negative marital conflict management and children’s

interactions with parents and peers was found to be mediated by both mothers’ and fathers’critical parenting and low emotional responsivity, thereby supporting the indirect as well asthe direct model of negative family interactions. The findings are discussed in relation to theimplications for treatment.

Introduction

There is convincing evidence that poor general maritalsatisfaction has a low-to-moderate correlation with awide range of negative child outcomes, in particular forchild conduct problems (e.g. Emery & O’Leary, 1982;Grych & Fincham, 1990; Jouriles, Bourg, & Farris, 1991;Kazdin, 1987 ; Reid & Crisafulli, 1990). Recently, re-search in this area has shifted away from the globalconstruct of marital adjustment to look at the specificaspects of marital functioning that are linked to childoutcomes. In particular, the role played by parents’ open

conflict, such as the expression of spousal physicalviolence (Jouriles, Murphy, Farris, & Smith, 1991;Jouriles, Murphy, & O’Leary, 1989), frequent verbalaggression (Grych & Fincham, 1990; Porter & O’Leary,1980), and intense child-rearing disagreements (Dadds,Schwartz, & Sanders, 1987) has been repeatedly impli-cated as a key component associated with children’saggressive behavior and emotional problems. But whatare the effects of less extreme marital conflict on children’ssocial adjustment? This is important to understand sinceconflict and anger are inevitable aspects of most mar-riages.

Researchers have begun to develop more detailedmicroanalytic observations of couples’ interactions inorder to specify the underlying processes within themarital relationship that are linked with children’s con-duct problems. For example, Katz and Gottman (1994)have reported that marriages characterized as high inmutual contempt and belligerence—nonverbal negativeaffect—have been associated with angry, physically ag-gressive, and noncompliant children. It appears thatchildren are as sensitive to nonverbal anger or todistressed emotions or to the affective quality of theirparent’s relationships as they are to overt or verballyexpressed anger (E. M. Cummings, Ballard, & El-Sheikh,

1991a). These studies indicate the importance of movingbeyond the study of individual and global risk indicators(such as global reports of marital dissatisfaction) to thestudy of risk mechanisms—that is, understanding thespecific underlying processes within the risk factor (i.e.how the conflict is managed or expressed) that play a rolein the causal chain leading to children’s conductproblems. The important question then becomes, what

aspect of the marital conflict carries the risk?We hypothesize that a couple’s negative conflict man-

agement skills (defined as the inability to collaborateand problem-solve, to communicate positively aboutproblems, and to regulate negative affect) is a key variablein marital relationships contributing to the developmentof conduct problems and to the way children learn tocommunicate and manage conflict with their parents andpeers. We find support for this theory from the work of Cummings and colleagues (E. M. Cummings, Ballard,El-Sheikh, & Lake, 1991b; E. M. Cummings & Davies,1994), who indicate that resolution of conflict betweencouples and providing children with explanations of theirconflict (absolving children from blame) is helpful for

children’s emotional adjustment. These researchers con-clude that adult resolution of conflict results in signifi-cantly reduced children’s anger and negativity.

Although these latest observational studies have pro-vided a great deal more provision in assessing specificaspects of marital interactions, they have not necessarilyprovided comparable precision in assessing children’soutcomes. Invariably, effects of marital conflict haveoften relied on mother reports of child behaviorproblems, which may be biased due to effects of maritaldistress and depression on their perceptions of their child.Studies utilizing father reports of children’s behaviorproblems and observations of father–child parentinginteractions as well as mother–child parenting inter-

actions are scarce. Comparatively little attention hasbeen paid to assessing the more subtle disruptions in thechild’s social adjustment, such as how particular patternsof marital interactions influence children’s communi-cation, play interaction styles, and affect when observedinteracting with peers as well as with their mothers andfathers. It is important to understand more precisely howyoung children’s relationships with peers and parents areaffected by particular styles of marital interactions. Forexample, do children with parents whose marital conflictmanagement style is characterized as noncollaborativeand negative in affect and content have more peerrelationship and parent interaction difficulties than chil-dren whose parents successfully collaborate, problem-

solve, and manage conflict? Although less is knownabout the effect of specific aspects of marital interactionson children’s peer relationships, there is, however, sub-stantial evidence suggesting that the quality of the maritalrelationship affects the quality of the sibling relationship(e.g. Brody, Stoneman, & McCoy, 1994). One of thepurposes of this study is to evaluate whether similareffects emerge for influencing interactions with peers andparents.

In addition to understanding the precise mechanismsof how a particular style of marital conflict managementinfluences children’s interactions with peers and parents,another purpose of this study is to understand how

distress in one family subsystem (i.e. couple) affects thefunctioning of another family subsystem (i.e. parenting).How is poor marital conflict management skill related toparent management skill? Poor parenting managementstyle, such as negative or critical discipline approachesand lack of emotional responsiveness, is certainly a well-known risk factor related to the development of conductproblems (Patterson, 1982; Webster-Stratton, 1985), but

what is less clear is how this risk factor (i.e. poor parentmanagement) is related to marital interactions. It wouldseem that family risk factors would be interrelated, withdisturbances in one family subsystem influencing thedevelopment and form of other family processes. Un-fortunately many prior studies have looked at these riskfactors (parenting and marital interactions) indepen-dently from each other (e.g. Jouriles, Murphy, et al.,1991 ; Mahoney, Jouriles, & Scavone, 1997) and notwithin the same model. Recent research indicates that theexamination of marital processes in isolation fromparenting processes cannot fully account for children’srelationship quality.

Most researchers agree that the marital relationship,

parent–child relationship, and children’s social adjust-ment are intercorrelated; however, there is controversyand conflicting evidence as to whether the marital re-lationship influences child behavior directly (E. M.Cummings et al., 1991b; Emery, Fincham, & Cummings,1992; Fincham, 1994) or whether the relationship is in-direct, that is, it is mediated by the parent–child relation-ship (Brody et al., 1994; Erel, Margolin, & John, 1998;Fauber, Forehand, Thomas, & Wierson, 1990; Mann &MacKenzie, 1996). In the indirect relationship model, it isproposed that the marital relationship influences childbehavior indirectly by compromising some aspect of theparenting relationship and consequently the parentingrelationship functions as a mediator in the association

between the marital relationship and child behavior.Some researchers have found evidence for both direct andindirect effects of the marital relationship on childbehavior (Gottman & Katz, 1989). None of these studiesspecifically examined marital conflict management skills,nor did they use an index of child adjustment thatinvolved observations of peer interactions in addition tochildren’s affect and behavioral interactions with parents.

We hypothesize that a couple’s low confidence in theirability to solve problems and their lack of observedconflict management skills or effective collaboration leadsto increasing negative affect and unresolved issues thatcontribute to escalating negativity in parenting inter-actions. We further theorize that the couples’ preoccu-

pation with their marital difficulties will lead to lessemotionally responsive parenting. These poor parentingskills will contribute to the development and maintenanceof child conduct problems. Thus, marital style will beassociated with the style of parenting; marital style willindirectly influence children’s conduct problems andconflict resolution skills with peers and parents. We alsohypothesize that marital conflict management style willhave a direct effect on children’s conduct problemsindependent from parenting style. This hypothesis isbased on the social learning model, which would suggestthat children model their parents’ hostile or ineffectualconflict management skills with each other. By under-

standing the underlying mechanisms that may be com-mon to several risk factors, we can then design inter-ventions that are more effective in addressing multiplefamily risk factors at the same time. We can buildtherapeutic programs for distressed couples and minimizethe negative consequences for children.

The present study examines the direct effects of overtmarital conflict management style as well as couple’s

perceptions of their ability to solve problems on children’sconduct problems in interactions with their peers andparents. In addition, we examine the indirect or medi-ational role of two dimensions of parenting (a) overtcritical parenting and (b) parental emotional responsivityon the linkage between marital conflict management andchildren’s conduct problems. We examine these modelsfor fathers and mothers separately, using reports andobservational data from both parents, as there has beensome suggestion in the literature that fathering may bemore disrupted than mothering by marital conflict (Coiro& Emery, 1998).

Method

Subjects

The sample consisted of 120 children aged 4–7 years. In orderto get a heterogeneous sample in terms of child conductproblems and marital and parenting behaviors, we recruitedhalf the subjects from the community and half from 60consecutivereferrals to a University Parenting Clinic recognizedin the community as a facility specializing in the evaluation andtreatment of young children with conduct problems. Theadvantage of a heterogeneous sample is that there is greatervariability in construct scores, thus more power for prediction.

Criteria for study entry for the clinic sample were that (a) thechild was between 4 and 7 years old; (b) the child had nodebilitating physical impairment, intellectual deficit, or historyof psychosis; (c) the primary referral problem was child

misconduct (e.g. noncompliance, aggression, oppositional be-haviors) that had been occurring for more than 6 months; (d)parents’ reports of their child’s behavior on the Eyberg ChildBehavior Inventory (ECBI; Robinson, Eyberg, & Ross, 1980)showed a clinically significant number of behavior problems(greater than two standard deviations above the norm for theage) ; (e) thechild metDSM-IV criteria forOppositional DefiantDisorder (ODD) and\or Conduct Disorder (CD) based on astructured diagnostic interview of parents and laboratoryobservation by highly experienced, reliably trained psychol-ogists and social workers; and (f) neither the family nor childwas currently receiving any treatment.

The community sample of 60 families of children withoutdiagnosed conduct problems were recruited through generaladvertisements placed in day care centers, schools, and news-

papers. Scores in the clinical range on parent and teacherquestionnaires served as exclusionary criteria. To avoid thegathering of a ‘‘ supernormal’’ group, we accepted children whospanned the range from problem-free to the clinical cutoffs onparent-rating scales. Our community sample was derived aftermatching with the clinic sample according to child’s sex, age,ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Also, children in both theclinic and community samples had to have two married parentsin the home in order to be eligible for the study. Table 1 presentskey demographic information.

Study children included 32 (26n7%) girls and 88 (73n3 %)boys, with a mean age of 5n66 years (SDl 1n33). Study parentsincluded 120 mothers and 120 fathers who had been married anaverage of 10n2 years (SDl 3n92). There were 6 ethnic minorityand 54 Caucasian children in each group. There were no

significant differences between the clinic and communitysamples in terms of parents’ age, education, social class,income,number of children in the family, or number of years married.

Procedures

Mothers and fathers independently completed the followingquestionnaires in the clinic setting: (a) demographic ques-tionnaire; (b) Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL ; Achenbach &Edelbrock, 1991); (c) Family Crisis Oriented Personal Scales(F-COPES; McCubbin & Thompson, 1987).

Following completion of the questionnaires, couples werevideotaped engaging in a 15-minute discussion of two self-identified problem areas. They were asked to try to resolve thetwo problems in the time period. The length of time has been

found to be adequate in Gottman’s previous research, whichhas varied discussions from 15 minutes to several hours(Gottman, 1979). In addition, each child was videotaped for 20minutes in our clinic playroom playing with his\her best friend.The friend needed to be within 2 years of the target child’s ageand of the same gender. After an initial warm-up play period,the children were asked, to, ‘‘Make the best thing you cantogether,’’ with the emphasis placed on the cooperative aspectof their play activity. They were given one Etch-a-Sketch and abox of Lincoln Logs and were told to decide on something theycould make together and that afterwards someone would cometo take a picture of their ‘‘joint project’’ after they hadcompleted it.

A home visit was conducted in the late afternoon or earlyevening to observe mother–child and father–child interactions.

Each dyad was observed for 30 minutes. The order of themother or father observation was counterbalanced. Obser-vations were conducted when all family members (otherchildren in the family or boyfriends and partners) were in viewof the observer; no telephone calls could be made and novisitors could be present. Aside from these changes in familyroutine, parents were told to do what they would normally do atthat time.

Measures

Marital reports and observational interactions of conflict man-agement. We assessed marital conflict management skills bymeans of mother and father reports of their confidence insolving problems, observations of low collaboration or poor

problem-solving skills and negative communication duringvideotaped laboratory observations of marital discussionsconcerning family problems, as well as by observations of negative marital affect during home observations.

(1) F -COPES . The F-COPES (McCubbin & Thompson,1987) consists of 30 items comprising 3 scales that assessinternal family coping patterns. Only the first subscale was usedin this study, which consisted of four items reflecting thecouple’s feelings of confidence in their ability to solve their

problems and their sense of mastery in dealing with unexpectedevents (e.g. strength in family to solve major problems, faceproblems head on, believe we can handle our own problems).The scale has good internal consistency (alphaln70), testreliability (rln71), and validity. In this study the confidencesubscale correlated n36 with the marital dyadic adjustment scale(DAS; Spanier, 1989), suggesting its modest relationship toreports of general marital satisfaction.

(2) Problem-Solving—Interaction Communication—AffectRating—Engagement Coding Systems (PS -I CARE ). The PS-ICARE was developed by Webster-Stratton, King, and Hollins-worth (1991) to code marital conflict management skills, whichwere coded from the videotapes of the marital problem-solvingdiscussions in the clinic. The coding system consisted of threecomponents: collaborative problem solving, affect, and com-

munication style. The collaborative problem solving includes: (a)problem definition (agreement about problem); (b) solutiongeneration; and (c) evaluation, agreement, and planning aboutsolutions. After coding these problem-solving items, the codersrate couples’ collaboration skills. The collaboration scaleranged from ‘‘low collaboration’’ (1–abrasive, dismissive,stonewalling, blaming) to ‘‘high collaboration’’ (5–cooperative,mutually reinforcing, joint ownership of problem, acceptsresponsibility, defines problem). A high score on this scaleindicates a high degree of effective problem solving. A highscore also indicates positive affect and a responsive attitudetoward the problem-solving process. Intraclass correlationscoefficients as a measure of interrater reliability for thecollaboration summary scores for mothers and fathers weresatisfactory (n64).

The communication style and affect components were de-veloped as a derivative of a global rapid marital coding system(RCISS) and the detailed Specific Affect Coding System(SPAFF) developed by Gottman (Gottman, McCoy, Coan, &Collier, 1996). We revised and adapted these coding systems inorder to develop a system that would be able to detect some of the more subtle aspects of positive and negative communicationstyles. The communication system included 15 communicationskills leading to 2 summary scores, 1 for total positivecommunication (5 items) (e.g. validate, express positive feelings,praise\appreciate, make positive request, humor) and one fortotal negative communication (10 items), (e.g. coerce\threaten,escalate\negative affect, masked meanness, deny responsibility,ignore\no acknowledgement, withdraw\retreat, disagree-closed, fault finding, complain\whine, command\moralize).Only the negative communication variable was used as anindicator of negative conflict management style in this study.

Training procedures for the 6 coders took approximately 3months of training (30–45 hours of practice with videotapes)and established 80% reliability with at least 2 precodedvideotapes before being considered a reliable marital coder.During the coding phase we randomly selected 30% of themarital videotapes to be recoded by a second coder in order toestablish interrater reliabilities. Coders were blind to whetherthe families were in the clinicor community conditions and wereassigned equally to observe families representing both con-ditions. Intraclass correlations coefficients as a measure of interrater reliability for the communication summary scoreswere satisfactory, ranging from n80 for total positive com-munication to n93 for total negative communication.

(3) Home observations of marital affect valence (DyadicParent–Child Interactive Coding System-Revised; DPICS-R).In adding to coding parent–child interactions during homeobservations (described below), coders also rated marital affect.Every 5 minutes observers paused to code the marital affectvalence on a scale ranging from ‘‘exuberant affect’’ (1) to‘‘unrestrained negative affect’’ (5). Affect valence describes theemotional quality of the content behaviors and is coded on thebases of nonverbal gestures, body posture, facial expressions,

and tone of voice and\or inflections. Behaviors are rated as (5)when father or mother expresses clear and pronounced anger,threats, hostility, or demeaning affect in relation to the spouse(not in relation to anyone else in the family). Descriptiveadjectives we used for this category included belligerent,enraged, inflamed, vindictive, screaming, violent, and abusive.Negative affect (4) was less pronounced and indicated mildirritation and slight hostility. On the other hand, exuberantaffect was defined as pronounced expression of intense hap-piness, warmth, affection, or supportivenesstowards the spouse.Intraclass correlation coefficients as a measure of interraterreliability were n92. (See below for discussion of DPICS-R as ameasure of parent–child interactions.)

(4) Marital constructs. From the measures described abovethere were two marital constructs defined for each parent. The

first marital construct, termed ‘‘negative marital conflict man-agement,’’ includes the total negative communication score (PS-I CARE), noncollaboration score (PS-I CARE), and negativeaffect valence (DPICS-R). For each parent, a composite scorefor this construct was computed by first converting thecomponent variables into z-scores and then summing them. Formothers, the Cronbach alpha for this construct was n71, withcorrelations among the component variables ranging from n34to n50 ( pn001). For fathers, the Cronbach alpha for thisconstruct was n60, with correlations among the componentvariables ranging from n19 to n43 ( pn05 to pn001). Thesecond marital construct, ‘‘ marital powerlessness,’’ includes thesingle global measure of low confidence in problem-solving (F-COPES). The correlation between the two marital constructswas n17 ( pln07) for mothers and n19 ( pn05) for fathers.

Parenting reports and interactions. We measured parentingvariables by means of observing mother and father parentinginteractions with their child during home observations.

Independent observations of parent–child interactions.(1) DPICS -R. The DPICS, originally developed by Robinson

and Eyberg (1981) and revised by Webster-Stratton (1989) toinclude affect dimensions, is a widely researched observationalmeasure for recording behaviors of parent–child interactions inthe home. This study used three separate parent summaryvariables: (a) positive affect (nonverbal expression of enjoy-ment, warmth, or enthusiasm directed at child); (b) total criticalstatements (which includes critical and rejecting statements andnegative commands directed at child); and (c) negative affectdimension (valence). Every 5 minutes observers paused to codethe parent valence on a scale ranging from ‘‘exuberant affect’’(1) to ‘‘unrestrained negative affect’’ (5). Definitions fornegative affect have been defined above. The only differencehere in the definition is that the negative affect must be directedtoward the child, not the spouse. (See below for discussion of DPICS-R as a measure of child behavior.)

Our highly trained staff observers (N l 8) had extensiveexperience using the DPICS-R system for approximately 3years before starting this project. To become ‘‘reliable,’’ theobserver must have achieved an interobserver agreement rate of at least 75% with a reliable observer on 2 consecutiveobservations. To count as agreement, events must be codedcorrectly by subject matter and coding categories and  in theproper sequence. Reliability checks with standardized video-tapes were done on a weekly basis and checked during weeklyobserver meetings as well as for 20% of home observations.

Reliability checks for home observations were randomly selec-ted from both the clinic and community conditions. Observerswere blind to whether the families were in the clinic orcommunity conditions and were assigned equally to observefamilies representing both conditions. Intraclass correlationsfor these parenting variables were n70 for positive affect, n77 forcriticals, and n91 for negative affect valence.

(2) Parenting constructs. Two parenting constructs weredefined for each parent. The first parenting construct, termed

‘‘critical parenting,’’ consisted of the single measure of overtcritical statements (DPICS-R) directed at the children. Thesecond parenting construct, termed ‘‘low emotional respons-ivity,’’ included low positive affect (DPICS-R) and negativeaffect valence (DPICS-R). For each parent, a composite scorefor this construct was computed using the z-scores for the twocomponent scores and then summing them. The Cronbachalpha for this construct score was n58 ( pn001) for mothersand n62 ( pn001) for fathers. The correlation between the twoparenting constructs was n23 ( pn05) for mothers and n27 ( pn01) for fathers.

Child conduct problems and conflict management skills. Childoutcome was assessed by means of mother and father reports of child externalizing behaviors, home observations of childnegative behaviorsand negative affect with mothers andfathers,

and laboratory observations of children’s conflict managementand collaboration skills while playing with a friend.

(1) CBCL. The parent form of the CBCL (Achenbach &Edelbrock, 1991) consists of 20 items dealing with socialcompetence and118 dealing with behavior problems.It hasbeenshownto discriminate clinic-referred from nonreferred children.The items constitute multiple behavior-problem scales derivedseparately for boys and girls in different age groups. The scalesform two broad-band groupings in all sex\age groups: Exter-nalizing Behavior (aggressive, antisocial, and undercontrolled)and Internalizing Behavior (fearful, inhibited, and overcon-trolled). For this study we were only interested in mother andfatherreports of theExternalizing score as a measure of conductproblems.The CBCL has established norms; publishedPearsoncorrelations were n80 for interparent reliability and n93 for

test–retest reliability for the Externalizing score. Interparentcorrelations in this study were n82, pn001.(2) Peer Problem-Solving—Interaction Communication— -

Affect Rating Coding System (PPS -I CARE ). The PPS-I CAREcoding system (Webster-Stratton, Hollinsworth, & Rogers,1991), a derivative of Gottman’s MACRO and MICROfriendship observations measures (Gottman, 1983, 1986), wasdeveloped specifically to evaluate children’s social skills andconflict management strategies. The variable used from thiscomplex coding system (including communication style andsocial skills) to encompass negative peer interactions consistedof a global rating by coders on a 5-point scale from non-collaborative\nonreciprocal play to highly reciprocal\collaborative play. Reciprocal\collaborative peer play wasdefined as each child being as equally involved as the other ingiving commands, disagreeing, giving suggestions, asking andgranting permission, and in complying to one another’srequests, suggestions, or ideas. In a noncollaborative relation-ship one child dominates the other, gives lots of commands, andrejects or refuses to comply with the other’s ideas or feedback.In other words, such a child is highly oppositional with his peer.We theorized that high negative interactions and conductproblems would be reflected in a high score on the non-reciprocal\noncollaborative scale. This rating scale was com-pleted forthe cooperative play segment, where thechildren werespecifically instructed by the examiner to cooperate together tomake a joint project. Thus to be noncompliant and oppositionalwith peers in response to the examiner’s instructions illustratesparticularly defiant behavior with peers. (See earlier descriptionin Procedures.)

It took approximately 6 months of weekly training andpractice for observers to become reliable. To assess reliability, asecond coder analyzed 30% of all videotapes, randomlyselected. The percentage agreement reliability was calculatedfor each 5-minute segment. The intraclass correlationcalculatedbetween observers for the summary variable was n68 forreciprocality\collaboration.

Training procedures for this coding system are identical tothose described above for the parent–child and marital in-

teraction coding systems.(3) DPICS -R. The DPICS, as described earlier in regard to

parenting skills, also assesses the child’s social interactions athome. For this study we were interested in two summary scoresreflecting the target child’s conflict management skills andconduct problems: total child deviance (sum of frequency of whinejyelljcryjphysical negativejsmart talkjaggression)and negative affect valence. The negative affect valence wasdescribed earlier, and the only difference here is that the child’snegative affect must be directed toward the parent beingobserved.

Intraclass correlations calculated between observers were n85(for deviance) and n79 for negative affect valence.

(4) Child construct. The child construct termed ‘‘child con-duct problems’’ was computed separately for (a) child conduct

with mother and peers and (b) child conduct with father andwith peers. These two versions of the child construct are usedseparately in subsequent tests of the mother and father models,respectively. The child conduct with mother and peers versionof the child construct includes total deviance with mother(DPICS-R), child negative affect valence with mother (DPICS-R), mother report of externalizing behaviors (CBCL), andnoncollaborative or oppositional play with peers (PPS-ICARE). The child conduct with father and peers version of thechild construct includes total deviance with father (DPICS-R),child negative affect valence with father (DPICS-R), fatherreport of externalizing behaviors (CBCL), and noncollaborativeplay with peers (PPS-I CARE). Note that the variable relatingto peers is identical in both versions of the child construct. Eachversion of the child construct was computed by summing the z-

scores for the four component items. For child conduct withmother and peers, the Cronbach alpha for the child constructwas n63, with correlations among the four component itemsranging from n19 to n46 ( pn05 to pn001). For child conductwith father and peers, the Cronbach alpha for the childconstruct was n66, with correlations among the four componentitems ranging from n25 to n50 ( pn01 to pn001).

Table 2 shows the means and standard deviations of thecomponent items in each of the construct scores describedabove. Note that means and standard deviations for theconstruct scores themselves are not presented because they arebased on z-scores and so are not meaningful.

Results

Preliminary Analysis

Correlational analyses were carried out to determinewhether any of the demographic variables (i.e. child’sage, child’s gender, family social position, and number of years married) were significantly related to the marital,parenting, and child construct scores. No statisticallysignificant relations were found, and demographic vari-ables were not included in further analyses. TheKolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality of the dis-tributions of the construct scores (5 for mothers and 5 forfathers) were nonsignificant (alphaln05) indicatingthese scores are normally distributed. correlations among the construct scores included in thepath analyses are shown in Table 3. Correlations amongconstructs in the mother–child analyses are above thediagonal and correlations among constructs in thefather–child analyses are below the diagonal.

Path Analysis

Path analysis was used to test the direct effects of 

marital conflict management and marital powerlessnesson child conduct problems and the indirect effects asmediated by parenting behaviors (critical and low emo-tional responsiveness). Separate path analytic modelswere tested for mothers and fathers. Specifically, onemodel tested the relationships among mother’s maritalconflict management, mother’s parenting behaviors, andchild conduct problems with mothers and peers ; theother model tested the relationships among father’smarital conflict management, father’s parenting be-haviors, and child conduct problems with fathers andpeers. Structural equation modeling was not used becauseof the limited sample size and difficulty finding at least

three intercorrelated variables per construct within themodel (Biddle & Martin, 1987).

Figure 1 depicts the full path model initially tested.This path diagram specifies both direct paths linkingmarital negative conflict management to child conductproblems and indirect paths that operate throughparenting behaviors. In the initial testing of the full pathanalytic model, a series of multiple regression analyseswere performed using simultaneous entry of predictors

for each consequent variable (Asher, 1983). Each box inthe path diagram that has arrows pointing to it representsone multiple regression equation. After estimating thefull model, paths that were not significant were eliminatedand the reduced model was estimated. In the reducedpath models (Figs. 2 and 3), the numbers on the paths arethe standardized regression coefficients (betas) and thenumbers in parentheses are the standard errors.

The results from the reduced path model for mothersare shown in Fig. 2. For mothers, marital powerlessnessshowed a significant direct path to child conductproblems, but did not show significant indirect pathsthrough either aspect of mothers’ parenting behaviors.

Marital negative conflict management showed both asignificant direct path to child conduct problems and asignificant indirect path through unresponsive parenting.The indirect path indicates that marital negative conflict

management affects low emotionally responsive par-enting, which then affects child conduct problems. Mari-tal negative conflict management also showed a signifi-cant direct path to critical parenting but the path did notcontinue to child conduct problems. The reduced modelfor mothers accounted for 44% of the variance in childconduct problems; multiple Rln66, F (3,116)l30n06, pn001.

Results from the reduced path model for fathers areshown in Fig. 3. For fathers, marital powerlessness didnot show either direct or indirect paths to child conductproblems. Fathers’ marital negative conflict managementstyle showed a significant direct path to child conduct

problems as well as two significant indirect paths to childconduct problems through both aspects of parentingbehaviors. Specifically, an indirect path indicates thatmarital negative conflict management directly affects

critical parenting, which then affects child conductproblems; the other indirect path suggests that maritalnegative conflict management directly affects low emo-tional responsivity in parenting, which then affects childconduct problems. The reduced model for fathers ac-counted for 47% of the variance in child conductproblems; multiple Rln68, F (3,116)l32n45, pn001.

Discussion

The results of this study provide support for ourhypotheses based on the social learning model, whichwould predict that marital interactional patterns would

show a direct linkage with child interactional patterns.This study showed that strong consistent paths emergedfrom a negative marital conflict management style asobserved in both mothers’ and fathers’ interactions witheach other to children’s negative conflict managementinteractions with parents and peers. The models weresimilar for both fathers and mothers and both confirmand expand the findings of those who have argued for thedirect effect relationship model (Emery et al., 1992) andE. M. Cummings (1994), who has indicated that couples’ability or inability to resolve conflict and manage theiremotional negativity is central to its potential impact on

children’s adjustment and ability to manage conflict.The results also confirmed an indirect relationship

model or what has been termed a ‘‘ spillover’’ hypothesis(Kerig, Cowan, & Cowan, 1993), in which negativeconflict management in the marital relationship is ex-pressed in the parenting relationship as well. For mothers,the influence of a negative marital conflict managementstyle was linked to a parenting style that was low inemotional responsivity (low positive affect and highnegative affect valence) and critical, but only low emo-tional responsivity was, in turn, linked to children’sconduct problems. For fathers, the effects of negativemarital conflict management style on child conflictmanagement style and conduct problems was linked to

both parenting constructs—low emotional responsivityas well as critical discipline—and both were linked tochildren’s conduct problems.

In terms of mothers’ and fathers’ self-efficacy in termsof their perceived ability to solve family problems, onlymothers’ sense of powerlessness had a direct effect onchildren’s conduct problems. There were no indirecteffects for mothers’ sense of powerlessness throughparenting. For fathers, their sense of marital power-lessness had no direct or indirect effects on children’sconduct problems.

In prior studies there has been inconsistency in regardto determining direct links from marital interactions to

child interactions, with the majority of studies that havetested both direct and indirect models finding support forthe indirect relationship model through parenting but notfor the direct relationship model (Brody et al., 1994; Erelet al., 1998; Fauber et al., 1990; Mann & MacKenzie,1996). We suggest that the inconsistency in these findingsin the past may have been due to the lack of precision inthe marital variables studied and reliance on global self-report measures either for marital satisfaction or for childadjustment. As we can see in this study, our maritalconstruct that utilized global self-reports of confidence inproblem solving (which are correlated with marital

satisfaction) had more inconsistent findings and weakercorrelations than our marital construct that used preciseobservable marital interaction variables. We believe thatthe increased precision in this study of the specific maritaland child interactional processes of interest has led to ourability to propose a model that accounts for considerablymore variance in the children’s behavior over and abovewhat has typically been found for global measures of marital functioning. Consistent with this view are tworecent studies utilizing more precise and detailed oper-ationalizations of marital processes, which also founddirect links from marital relations to child adjustment(Davies & Cummings, 1998 ; Davis, Hops, Alpert, &Sheeber, 1998).

The findings supporting the indirect link are interestingas they suggest that effects of mothers’ negative maritalconflict management on children’s behaviors are medi-ated by mothers’ lack of emotional responsivity inparenting rather than their overt critical parenting. As forthe father model, the effects of fathers’ negative maritalconflict management are mediated by both fathers’critical parenting and lack of emotional responsivity.These data are consistent with Patterson’s theory(Patterson, DeBaryshe, & Ramsey, 1989) that maritalconflict will disrupt mothers’ parenting skills and expandtheir work in showing that fathers’ parenting is disruptedas well as mothers’ parenting. Furthermore these

parenting variables that are linked to marital conflict arealso shown to be important linkages to children’s conflictmanagement style. These data offer no support for theargument that marital conflict disrupts fathering morethan mothering, but rather suggest that the parenting of both mothers and fathers is negatively associated withmarital conflict.

The findings suggesting both direct and indirect routes

provide a model of the family system as a whole, takinginto account several family variables and clarifying theprocess through which marital conflict affects children. Itsuggests that the crucial role of parenting is due not onlyto the already known effects of parenting on children butalso to the ‘‘spillover’’ process (Erel et al., 1998) andunderlying conflict management difficulties common toboth marital and parent–child relationships.

These theoretical findings have clinical implications fortreatment of families with young children with conductproblems. For example, proponents of the indirectrelationship model have suggested that even if theimmediate effects of children’s exposure to maritalconflict become more stable, patterns of aggressive

behavior depend on whether the marital problems com-promise parenting behaviors. It has been suggested thathigh levels of affection and positive discipline with thechild may buffer the effects of marital conflict onchildren’s behavior problems. However, these datasuggest that negative parenting and negative maritalconflict management are highly intertwined and that evenif parents do maintain positive parenting relations withtheir children despite high levels of marital conflict,children will still be affected directly by the negativeconflict management style of the marriage. Thus, it wouldseem that interventions need to be broadened to includetraining in effective marital problem solving, communi-cation, and anger management skills as well as parenting

skills and affect regulation. Indeed, several studies havealready shown that parent training programs that focusedexclusively on parenting skills were more likely to fail forthose families who had conflicted or distressed marriages(Dadds et al., 1987 ; Webster-Stratton, 1994). Daddsfound that marital conflict was predictive of poortreatment outcome assessed at 6-month follow-up(Dadds & McHugh, 1992). In Webster-Stratton andHammond’s study (1990), marital status and maritalconflict (for mothers and fathers respectively) werefactors that made the greatest contribution to theprediction of child behavior problems immediately post-treatment. Moreover, Webster-Stratton (1990) foundthat marital conflict did not improve as a result of 

training focused solely on parenting skills, unlikemothers’ depression. Consequently it appears that whiletraditional parent training can improve parent–childinteractions, it has little impact on marital satisfaction orconflict; conversely, marital conflict and marital sat-isfaction do appear to have an impact on the outcome of parent training in terms of children’s adjustment. All of these findings taken together suggest that parent trainingprograms need to be broadened to emphasize partnerinvolvement, parent support, marital communication,problem solving, and coping skills. When fathers orpartners are left out of the training there is a much greaterchance that, although the mother may have learned more

effective ways of parenting and problem solving, herpartner will still be modeling ineffective problem solving,negative affect, and communication, which counteractsthe mothers’ efforts and contributes to increased maritalconflict. A view of parent training that requires mothersand their partners (be these the father, grandparent,teacher, or close adult friend of the child) to be involvedin training, and that deals with broader family and

interpersonal issues than parenting per se, will moreaccurately reflect the more complex model concerning theetiology of conduct problems. This hypothesis is sup-ported by a recent study evaluating a traditional parenttraining approach with a broader parent training in-tervention, which also focused on marital communi-cation, problem solving, and anger management. Resultsshowed significantly improved marital functioning andchild problem-solving skills in the combined interventioncompared with parents and children who received onlythe parent intervention (Webster-Stratton, 1994).

There are several limitations of this study that deservecomment. The first concerns the relatively homogeneousand nonrandom sample. Our results cannot be gener-

alized to families with differing demographic and racialcharacteristics. The second limitation concerns the role of gender differences in our findings. For example, doesmother or father marital negativism impact boys and girlsdifferently? Since our sample of girls in this study wassmall we did not feel confident in making generalizationsbased on such a small sample size. Future research withlarger samples is necessary to determine whether there areindeed different outcomes for boys versus girls dependingon whether the mother or the father or both aredemonstrating negative conflict management styles intheir marriage. It is possible that the linkages betweenmarital conflict and parenting vary according to genderof the child. Third, we can’t determine from this analysis

the nature of the directions of the causal relationshipsbetween marital interactions, parenting, and child con-duct problems. In our model we have hypothesized thatthe difficulties that such parents have are not due to theirlack of parenting skills per se, but rather because theylack conflict management skills. Parents who have moredifficulties with affect regulation, conflict resolution, andcommunication find it harder to cope with life stressors,marital disagreements, and parenting issues. As a result,not only do they fall into the negative reinforcement trapwhen parenting, but they also model in their marriagestheir negative affect patterns, troubled communication,and ineffective conflict management strategies for theirchildren, thereby further contributing to their children’s

difficulties with peer relationships including poor com-munication and poor problem solving, as well asescalating anger and aggression. Conversely, it could beargued that it is children’s negative interactions andbehaviors that lead to critical and unresponsiveparenting, which in turn leads to marital problem-solvingdifficulties. At this point we can only test the extent towhich observed associations among variables can bepredicted from our hypothesized model without respectto the direction of the effects. Finally, this model is notmeant to be exhaustive and undoubtedly a unidirectionalmodel is too simplistic. Current conceptualizations mustemphasize the reciprocal effects between children and

their parents. For example, a model that also includeschildren’s temperament, attributions, emotional reac-tivity, and level of cognitive development will undoubt-edly explain even more of the variance in children’s socialadjustment. Future analysis with a larger sample usingmore powerful statistical procedures (e.g. structuralequation modeling) will allow for testing a more com-prehensive model that includes child factors as well as

family factors and will give greater precision to our abilityto predict child adjustment.
