Last year we started a very exciting programme here at the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis.

It’s called R&D by the Sea.

R&D by the Sea is the Marine Theatre’s nurturing programme for new and developing work.

We all need space to think. Lyme Regis, set in the heart of England’s ONLY natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by 95 miles of truly stunning coastline with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth’s history, has just that.

It’s not often ideas come fully formed. We need time to delight, surprise, scare and confuse ourselves. To give ourselves fertile ground on which to develop. To invest in hours of research and then to forget all about it. This is where R&D by the Sea comes in.

R&D by the Sea gives artists use of the theatre and its facilities, normally for a 5-day period, to develop their work. We’ve invited writers, actors, theatre makers and practitioners of all kinds to come to Lyme Regis. Unfold, unlock and explore a vision, a feeling, a thought. Draw from our landscapes, history, communities and people.

And at the end of their week-long stay, we’ve invited these artists to share what they’ve found.

With you.

We’re very excited to be welcoming three artists to Lyme Regis this autumn under the R&D by the Sea umbrella. Each sharing will be entirely different. It may last 10 minutes. It may last an hour. We can’t tell you much about the sharings, as they haven’t been made yet. All we ask is that you come along with a warm heart and an open mind. You’ll get a chance to chat to the company afterwards and fill out a feedback form with your thoughts. We’d love to hear what you think.

Previous companies who have used the R&D by the Sea programme have gone on to tour the work both at home and abroad. We are very proud that RemoteControl had their piece La Donna è Mobile nominated for a Total Theatre Award at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

For details of the artists involved this spring and their sharings, keep an eye on www.marinetheatre.com.

If you’re an artist interested in applying for a place on the R&D by the Sea programme, please visit www.marinetheatre.com/rd-by-the-sea.

Vin GarbuttSaturday 18th January

Powerful, hugely moving, warm, humane, inspired, funny and gut-wrenchingly honest. These are just some of the superlatives used to describe Vin Garbutt’s performance. An elder statesman of folk, Vin’s career has spanned over 40 years of constant worldwide touring. His songs are inspired by the folk tradition, but have transformed into gritty social comment and life observations. He is renowned for his hilarious intros, but for him his song lyrics are the crux of his performance. A perfect winter warmer this January at the Marine!

Winner of BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards “Best Live Act” Award 2001.

“Vin cuts through the bull, grasping those he meets firmly by the hand and shaking them up with a dose of laughter and tears. It’s a true gift to be able to make us laugh and squirm at the same time, but Vin does both. He should be prescribed on the National Health.”English Folk Dance & Song Society

It has appeared twice at the Royal National Theatre under Sir Peter Hall as well as playing the Swan at Stratford upon Avon for the RSC, being broadcast on BBC Radio 4, and touring America raising funds for Sam Wanamaker’s rebuilding of the Globe Theatre on the South Bank.

Phil BeerThursday 6th March

Phil Beer is the multi-instrumentalist half of England’s foremost acoustic duo Show of Hands. His instrumental wizardry is well documented and has been used by countless artists over the years, among the most notable being The Rolling Stones, Mike Oldfield and Steve Harley. He was for many years lead guitarist and singer with the Albion Band and co-wrote many of their songs. He has also made many forays into film and television music as well as finding time to produce and record albums for other artists. The band plays a unique blend of folk ‘n’ roll which is quite unlike any other band currently on the circuit. They cannot be pigeonholed as Folk Rock! Award-winning fiddle player and singer Tom McConville returns to the Marine with his distinct brand of internationally renowned fiery, heart-stopping performances. Bookends presents

Simon & Garfunkel Through the YearsThursday 20th March

A powerful and moving live performance and multimedia show, Through the Years takes audiences on a chronological journey through the friendship and career of Simon & Garfunkel.

Simon and Garfunkel met as youngsters in a school production of Alice in Wonderland. At this time neither Paul Simon nor Art Garfunkel could have imagined the career that lay before them. Although their time together as recording artists was short, their impact on the music industry worldwide was great and their music would live on for decades.

Opening at the start of their career and ending at the much publicised breakup, Through the Years uses video clips, audio snippets, and imagery and features hits such as The Sound of Silence, Mrs Robinson, The Boxer and the unforgettable Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Untied Theatre presents

For Their Own GoodThursday 27th March

Fringe First Award Winner 2013.

Two knackermen, a horse, a gun and a tiny metropolis full of death. Can the way we kill animals teach us anything about our own demise?

With unflinching honesty and an eerily detached workmanship, two knackermen investigate the pitfalls of being high up the evolutionary chain. While dispatching the sick, lame or just plain old their own mortality is suddenly and sharply brought into focus.

Combining beautiful puppetry, new writing and documentary material, this show visits the Marine fresh from winning a Fringe First at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival. It tells a moving and darkly comic tale about the only certainty in life – Death. How it’s become removed from us as a process. How maybe we should reclaim it.

“Astonishingly poignant…a rare energy and power.” Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman

For Their Own Good is a Bitesize commission supported by Warwick Arts Centre, mac Birmingham, Bristol Ferment, China Plate Theatre, The British Council and Arts Council England.

Al GoodwinFriday 28th March

Sparks of hope fly from each one of Al Goodwin’s songs as he takes you on a journey through the pivotal moments in his life. A warm, honest Yorkshireman, Al is no stranger to the hard grind of life and is clearly not afraid to bare his soul. But his sincere lyrics and fully charged acoustic guitar playing are laced with a strength, compassion and humour that verges on intoxicating. Experiencing a live performance with Al is like hanging out with an old friend with some great songs thrown in. A richly rewarding experience that comes with a lingering afterglow.

Working in a building with a 119-year history can sometimes be a problem, and when that building is right next to the sea things can be even trickier. An extensive survey has revealed that in order to preserve the Marine, its two roofs are in desperate need of repair, with the pitch roof needing re-insulating, re-pitching and re-slating. Work to re-gutter, repair mortaring, paint the walls and treat the sea-facing timbers, along with the addition of solar panels, will add to the longevity and the economic and environmental sustainability of the theatre. The total cost of this work is estimated to be somewhere in the region of £95,000.

The building has survived for generations through the support of the community. With your help we want to guarantee the people of Lyme Regis a theatre at the heart of the Jurassic Coast for another 119 years. We’ve got a great history of fantastic performance here in Lyme. Whether it’s one of the local societies (who date back to the 1920s), Lyme Youth Theatre or one of the dozens of world famous acts that have appeared here over the years (including Jimmy Cagney, Michael McIntyre, Status Quo and Jo Brand) there has always been excellent, affordable nights out in Lyme. Unless we can fix the roof, that tradition is under threat. If you feel you’re able to make a contribution, however small, please visit www.marinetheatre.com. If you’d rather not donate online, please pop in to the theatre or send a cheque in the post made payable to LymeArts Community Trust. Any help is very, very gratefully received. Thank you.

Tim, Harry, Nigel and all of the Marine Theatre Team.

Berkavitch

ShameSaturday 26th April

‘Everyone has something they are ashamed of. A moment in their lives when they knew they were doing the wrong thing. A bad choice, a wasted chance, that thing you wish you hadn’t done. That thing you will always regret. These moments add up and it is the mistakes of our past that make us who we are today.’

In this new work of spoken-word hip-hop theatre, John Berkavitch explores the feeling of shame through a combination of narrative spoken-word, hip-hop and contemporary dance, illustration, animation and music.

Starring John Berkavitch with choreography by Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere and an original music score by Jamie Woon and Royce Wood Junior.

Concerts in the West

Aoyama DuoWednesday 30th April

The flute and the harp have long been recognised by composers as a sublime combination with a strong visual and aural impact. Flautist Katherine Bicknell and concert harpist Keziah Thomas are both section principals from the Royal College of Music who have been playing together since 1998 as the Aoyama Duo. They have performed at numerous prestigious venues, including the National Gallery, the Tower of London and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Now, thanks to Concerts in the West, the Aoyama Duo will be playing an exquisite repertoire consisting of:

Harp Concerto in Bb Major, Op. 4 No. 6 (G. F. Handel 1685-1759)

Naiades Fantasy-Sonata (William Alwyn 1905-1985)
