The new Alfa Laval Separation Unit is a fully integrated, modularised oil cleaning system that has the lowest installa-tion costs and operating costs. It is a small and very compactsystem and has the highest separation efficiency onthe market.

ApplicationThe Alfa Laval Separation Unit is specifically designed forcleaning a wide range of fuel oils and lubricating oils for alltypes of diesel engines found in the marine and power industries.

• Heavy Fuel Oils with high densities up to 1010 kg/m3

and viscosity up to 700 cSt/50°C. (Higher viscosities onrequest.)

• Lubricating oils for all slow, medium and high speed dieselengines.

• Distillate and light diesel oils (MDO).

The Separation Unit is suitable for shipbuilders and ship operators in newbuilding applications; power plant builders

and operators; diesel engine builders and in retrofitapplications to replace or supplement existing cleaningsystems.

The Separation Unit range has seven sizes to suit all capacityrequirements.

ConceptThe Separation Unit is a totally new approach to cleaningfuels and lubes. It combines a new separator and its ancillarycomponents, together with control system and starter box, ina fully integrated modular design on its own base plate.

In laboratory tests, it has been measured as having thehighest separating efficiency on the market. It can be furthercombined with a unit for heating and pumping to form aSystem Module.

More combinations of system modules are also available, together with several more options to suit the installation oroperators requirements:

• Single System ModuleComprising a heater (steam, electric, hot water or thermal oil) and a threescrew pump connected to theSeparation Unit.

• Double System ModuleTwo complete separation systems, with their own heaters and pumpsand interconnecting pipework, on amodule base.

• Sludge Removal KitA unique sludge handling system, which takes care of the dischargedsludge and water with its own smalltank and pump set.

• Remote ControlThe Separation Unit can be operatedremotely from a control room usingREMIND™ software.

Operating principleUntreated oil, heated to the correcttemperature, is fed continuously to theseparator for cleaning of impurities. After centrifugal separation, cleaned oilis continuously pumped away and sepa-rated sludge and water accumulate atthe bowl periphery.

The system operates on the ALCAPprinciple, therefore a water transducerin the clean oil outlet measures thecapacitive resistance, and signalschanges to the control unit EPC 50.Water is then removed either by open-ing of the drain valve or through the discharge ports in the bowl during asludge discharge. The EPC 50 auto-matically controls the method of waterremoval depending on the water

content. The total losses of sludge, oiland water during the discharge processis considerably less than any previousseparator model due to bowl size, longer discharge interval and accuratecontrols. The CentriShoot dischargeprocess incorporates a patented flexibledischarge slide.

The separator is driven by an electricmotor via a friction clutch and belt. Theseparator bowl is fixed at the top of aspindle, which is supported by bearingsand special composite springs. Theseparator design incorporates a sludgeevacuation which is absorbed by thecasing and allows the sludge volume tobe discharged to a sludge tank. As anoption a small intermediate sludge tank isavailable. This means that the conven-

tional sludge tank under the separatorcan be avoided, and the associatedvent pipe and heating coil are not needed. The Sludge Removal Kit takes care of thesludge by pumping automatically to themain sludge holding tank.

No adjustments are necessary in the bowl. No gravity discs are fitted. A patented paring tube adapts itself to remove the water from the bowl and a paring disc pumps away thecleaned oil.

The EPC 50 control system master-minds the entire operation of theSeparation Unit, with monitoring of control and alarm functions. Specialtext messages indicate process parameters and alarms on the LED

Features & Benefits• Small footprint and compactness

gives flexibility in positioning in theengine room and saves space.

• Installation ease as all componentsand hardware are pre-installed. Thissaves significant costs, installationmanhours, design and materialscompared with loose components.

• Longer service intervals mean thatplanned maintenance is performedless often and spare parts consump-tion is reduced to give low operatingcosts.

• Separation efficiency of over 85% for 5 micron particles tested in thelaboratory ensures the best removalof harmful contaminants.

• No water tank needed to supplyoperating water, saving materialsand installtion costs.

• Same design for fuels and lube oil!Operators have one type of systemfor operation, maintenance and spareparts.

• Pre-tested system means that allfunctions are tested and approved atthe factory, giving quicker commis-sioning.

• CentriLock™ non-threaded lock ringmeans quick opening of the bowl and no heavy lock ring spanner andhammer!

• Sludge Removal Kit, optional for lubeand diesel oil, avoiding the need for asludge tank under the separatorresults in considerable savings inmaterial and installation costs.

• Remote control is available in severaloptions. REMIND software is includedwith every delivery. Network solutionsusing REMIND and SATTBUS com-munication or PROFIBUS and ownsoftware allow remote operation froma control room.

Separation Unit and System ModulesThe Separation Unit can be manu-factured with heaters and pumps toform system modules in differentcombinations to suit machine roomlayouts.
