INTRODUCTION

Jordan is located in Asia. The capital city is Amman The languages that are spoken in Jordan are Arabic and also English.

GEOGRAPHY

Two major bodies of water in Jordan are: The Dead Sea which 203 cm deep, 46 miles long and ten miles wide. Another water body is Azraq Oasis which is 46,000 square miles. Major cities in Jordan are Amman, Zarqa, and Irbid. Petra is one of Jordan’s landmarks. The Jordan River is one of Jordan’s landforms. It is the lowest river in the world.

HISTORYJordan came into existence in 1200 BC. Jordan wasn’t independent until it gained it in 1946. Former leaders of Jordan were King Hussein and King Abdullah. In 1958, King Abdullah was assassinated and his son, Talal is crowned King. In 1967, a 6- day war began between Jordan and Israel. In the Roman city ruins of Petra, the treasure tomb is very large. In 1952, king Talal was uncrowned and his son, Hussein, became King. In 1999, King Hussein died of cancer and his son, King Abdullah is crowned king.

ECONOMY

Jordan had a hard time during the late 1960s when the PLO’s guerillas took over. They called it the Black September. Natural resources in Jordan are Phosphates, Potash, and Shale.

CULTUREMuslims in Jordan accept and respect Christmas Season. Jesus was baptized in Jordan. That is why many Muslims in Jordan celebrate Christmas. Weddings in Jordan are celebrated differently depending if they are Muslim or Christian Traditional Muslims usually celebrate before the wedding. The men, if they do not have much money, celebrate on the streets. The women celebrate at home. Many Jordanian men wear a hattah. It’s a red and white checkered cloth that they wear on their heads. The hattah frequently has decorative tassels on it. The hattah traditionally protected the person wearing it from sand and sun in the hot, dry deserts.

INTERESTING FACTS

The population in Jordan is 6.48 million! Did you know that Jordan has the lowest suicide rate? It runs at 0.04 per 1,000 people. The Jordanian flag has three stripes. White, black, and green. Each color represents an Islamic Caliphate. (Or a family that has had power for a long time.) The seven pointed star
