SITE AND SITUATION
In the early decades of the 20th century, a group of Chicago professionals united together to recreate in the natural landscapes surrounding their city. They named themselves the Prairie Club after the vast native grasslands that stretched across the upper Midwest. The Indiana Dunes State Park and the Dunes National Lakeshore are the legacy of the club’s efforts to conserve and celebrate this renowned landscape.
A team of twelve students from seven departments collaborated to produce eleven fi lm and animation shorts, eleven poster illustrations advertising each fi lm short, and two children’s books that communicated the contribution of the Prairie Club in conserving the Indiana Dunes.

SITE AND SITUATION
A traditional neighborhood development group has recently acquired a 90 acre suburban infi ll site in Muncie, Indiana. The site is adjacent to Ball State University’s Schidler Apartments and will become a new mixed-use development adhering to the ideologies set forth in LID and TND/New Urbanism principles, as well as additional conservation and “green” design practices. Further, the development will support sustainable stormwater management and energy and food production for its residents.
VISION STATEMENT
Tillotson Place is a precedent community for progressive and sustainable neighborhood design in the city of Muncie. Housing opportunities, including single family and zero lot line homes, townhomes, and cottage clusters, invite people from various socioeconomic backgrounds into the community with open arms. An internal park and recreation network provides connections to public transportation options including the MITS bus and the Cardinal Greenway, Indiana’s longest system of recreational trails.
Eco-restoration is critical at the nearby Schramm Family Wetland, which takes advantage of existing hydrologic processes to provide habitat for Delaware County’s endangered species while managing stormwater on the site.
The Dauphine Commercial Complex includes an organic grocery and farmers market, a coffee house, a restaurant, and plenty of offi ce space. The Garibet Community Campus includes a multi-purpose civic center with a daycare and continuing education space to support the local community. Community gardens allow for convenient on-site food production, while rooftop solar panels and geothermal systems emphasize self-suffi ciency.

Indiana is funding the development of a TOD at an urban infi ll site near downtown Indianapolis. The development shall include a mixed-use program of residential, live-work, and commercial uses, with a strong focus as a transit hub for the Nickel Plate rail line from Downtown Indianapolis to Indiana’s northern suburbs of Fishers and Noblesville.
The development will adhere to the ideologies set forth in TOD, LID, and LEED ND principles, as well as additional conservation and “green” design practices. It will exhibit strong connectivity to existing physical, social, and cultural contexts.
VISION STATEMENT
22nd Street Station, future home of the Indianapolis Arts District is a vibrant community supporting live-work opportunities and home-grown interests. The neighborhood features local business; cafés, restaurants, and retail provide commercial opportunities for residents and visitors alike. The Design Factory, located at 22nd Street and Yandes, serves as a central hub for design and manufacturing at the site. Here, design fi rms fabricate and sell their work in an interactive and creative environment. Single family housing, duplexes, townhomes, apartments, and cohousing support families from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds and foster strong community ties. The newly-renovated Francis W. Parker Elementary School Complex provides safe and educational experiences for children of all ages and their families. Abundant green space encourages community collaboration and celebration.

This project proposes a strategic redevelopment for the Shelby St. corridor in Indianapolis, IN between the University of Indianapolis and Fountain Square. The corridor should provide an enriching experience for visitors and improve residents’ quality of life. Districts identifi ed in the framework plan include Fountain Square, Pleasant Run, Garfi eld Park North, Garfi eld Park South, Shelby Place, and the University of Indianapolis.

SITE AND SITUATION
New York City is hosting a competition for the redesign of Pier 54. The pier is to be a civic, commemorative, and cultural landmark celebrating New York City’s role in the Trans-Atlantic Voyages. Located in the Meatpacking District, it should not only provide an active and passive recreational outlet for visitors, but also serve as a gateway to the Hudson River Park esplanade and the Highline.
VISION STATEMENT
The Maritime Plaza provides programming for pop-up food, art, and retail opportunities, as well as a space for refl ection on the city’s involvement in oceanic travel. The two-story Cunard Pavilion, located adjacent to the Maritime Plaza, serves as a space for educational programming and special events. The upper level of the pavilion is intended to host the pier’s special events, while the lower level of the pavilion will house the Maritime Museum, a collection dedicated to preserving the history of the Cunard and White Star lines.
The pavilion looks out onto the White Star Event Lawn, which provides space for outdoor seasonal event programming, including art and food fairs, fi lm screenings, concerts, and cultural and seasonal festivals. The lawn boasts great views of the Hudson River and the New Jersey palisades at Hoboken.
A transient boat docking area has been provided on the north and south sides of the pier to provide space for non-commuter passenger vessels for commercial, recreational, and private services to and from Pier 54.
Flooding gardens provide an ever-changing ecological art piece. During high tide, the gardens are fl ooded, inviting the Hudson’s wildlife onto its banks.

SITE AND SITUATION
The memorial to the USS Indianapolis will be moved from the northern end of the Indianapolis Canal District to an honorary location on the American Legion Mall. It will become part of the larger Indianapolis Mall National Historic District that embodies the planning principles of the early 20th century “City Beautiful” movement. Located between the American Legion Building and Obelisk Square, the memorial will be highly visible from historic Meridian Street. The memorial pays tribute to the fallen seamen of the USS Indianapolis, provides peace for friends and families, and educates visitors.
VISION STATEMENT
Visitors to the USS Indianapolis Memorial will experience a landscape designed to honor those involved in the 1945 sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Patrons proceed inward along concentric bands set into the landscape which guides them down towards the memorial and through time. Band intervals and vegetation density increase as time to implosion grows shorter. Finally, visitors burst into the central sunken memorial plaza, which features the USS Indianapolis Memorial.
The memorial, set on a fl oor of rough granite and backlit concrete, features stunning maritime and nighttime effects. A water wall surrounding the northern portion of the plaza visually commemorates the lost with a rotating display of photographs behind a translucent veil of water. A fi nal, twisting walkway leads visitors up and out of the sunken plaza. The names of the fallen trail alongside the walkway as visitors meander through a therapeutic garden space.

SITE AND SITUATION
RATIO Architects was chosen by the Porter County Parks and Recreation Department’s Land Acquisition and Development Committee in December 2013 to develop the master plan for a new 63.5 acre park just north of Kouts, Indiana. The park, located between County Roads 650S and 700S, just west of IN 49, will be Porter County’s fi rst venture into active recreation for sports teams (Schultz).
The need for additional parkland has been identifi ed in the community needs assessment found in the Porter County Parks and Recreation 2012 Comprehensive Master Plan. Land for the park was purchased in December 2013, and while the park is still in the planning phases, the goal is to have the property “shovel ready” by spring, according to Parks Planner Ray Joseph.

Park programming was designed to promote local recreation and encourage visitation by traveling sports teams (Wieland).

SITE AND SITUATION
A new state-of-the-art preserve and nature center is to be constructed in northern Indiana. The refuge will provide a safe haven for the interpretation of an endangered or threatened species of Lake, LaPorte, and Porter counties. GIS should be used to help properly identify an appropriate location for the sanctuary.
VISION STATEMENT
The goal of the Northern Harrier Nature Preserve is to protect the Northern Harrier from human development threats. The northern harrier, the only harrier found in North America, is one of only 13 species of harrier worldwide (“Northern Harrier”). Threats to the northern harrier include habitat loss and the decreasing availability of prey.
Nesting sites should be located over 1,300 feet away from human development areas, including roadways, active rail lines, industrial parks, airports, and recreational trails and facilities to minimize species disturbance. Appropriate hunting and nesting habitat should be provided in grassland or wetland sites greater than 20 acres. Access should be provided to educational institutions to increase species awareness. Habitats should be located within a 5 mile radius of schools to satisfy LID (Low Impact Development) driving distance requirements.
KINGSBURY STATE FISH AND WILDIFE AREA
The fi nal site chosen for the Northern Harrier Nature Preserve, is an emergent herbaceous wetland site of 34 acres located in LaPorte County, Indiana. The site, deemed the most suitable for both hunting and nesting habitats for the Northern Harrier, is located in the Grande Marsh sector of the Kingsbury State Fish and Wildlife Area.

SITE AND SITUATION
The Nature Conservancy of Indiana has recently acquired approximately 11.70 acres of land on which their new interpretive center and offi ce building will be constructed to accommodate approximately 30 employees and daily visitors. It is ideally situation for the ecologically sensitive celebration of the natural beauty of Brown County. The site is located atop a prominent ridge surrounded by rolling, moderately steep topography.
VISION STATEMENT
This project package demonstrates functional sustainable development practices in all aspects of site planning and design. The building orientation and site design complies with local building codes and ordinances. The building meets LEED certifi cation and the project shall receive SITES recognition for its site/project design. Environmental stewardship was critical for this project; only context-sensitive solutions were proposed.
BUILDING
The Roberta Fulbright Fayetteville Public Library, designed by Warren Segraves in 1961, is currently located in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The public library, newly renovated to serve as a commercial offi ce space, is a multi-story building with strong horizontal emphasis. The modernist building is well-known for its exposed black steel framing and glass open spaces.

A full engineering package was completed for this project, including an erosion and sediment control plan, a layout plan, road alignment, a grading plan, national stormwater calculations, a drainage plan, drainage details, site construction details, and site sections.
