ART LEAGUE OF
HENDERSON
COUNTY
MARCH 2017—Meetings held the 2nd Sunday of each month at 1:30 P.M./except Dec.
Come to our second Sunday of each month’s (except Dec.) regular meetings and watch ALHC “Light Your Fire of Creativi-ty!” It’s not just another boring business meeting, rather lovely refreshments from 1:30 to 2 p.m., then a short, to-the- point business meeting, and announcement of Viewer’s Choice winner. While there you can view and vote on the art league members’ beautiful paintings displayed in the hall-ways for the month, as well as view the Artist of the Month’s full wall display on the entry hall 16’ wall.
If that isn’t enough encouragement, then how about the educational demos presented by area artists - most profes-sional - who show their personal techniques honed by years of experience?
On the left, see presentation artwork by March’s meeting Demo presenter, professional, award winning pastel artist Alec Hall. Alec will be making a presentation with John An-derson. Alec’s bio will be on page 5 to get to know him a little better prior to our next meeting on Sunday, March 12.
Al Junek, our demo talent scout sent out the to-date sched-
ule, with more to come! Here’s the next 3 upcoming;
• SUN., APRIL 9 - PAM HADDOCK - She will present in
Watercolor with brayer technique. Her work is amazing!
See photos in following pages.
• SUN., MAY 14 - JIM CARSON - Jim will demo his unique
style in Oils. Photos of his work on following pages.
• SUN., JUNE 11—LENORE BARNETT - Lenore will perform
Critiques and Demo. More detail to come.
Make sure you note the meeting dates in your calendar!
Our vibrant ALHC community brings much to the table here
in Henderson County. If you are a member, please PARTICI-
PATE in any area of service you are comfortable. We still
need a V.P. this year who will step into the role as President
in January 2018 with support of the Jeff Mangum, Pres.
If you are considering joining NOW is the time! Display your
paintings in the Opportunity House and grow in the arts! A
big thanks to Al Junek and Cynthia Mosher for their tireless
efforts on behalf of our membership. ∞

HENDERSON CO. AWARDS ART TEACHERS WITH
ALHC FUNDS FOR ART SUPPLIES
(L-R): 2016 Teachers attending to receive awards were Maureen Rhodes, Rugby Middle School; Kelly King, West Henderson High; Stephen Harrison, Flat Rock Middle School; Martina Zinn, Balfour High School; and Courtney Hoelscher, Hendersonville High School. Those who were unable to attend were Elizabeth Weisel, North Hen-derson High School; Robert Wallace, East Henderson High School; Terry Northrup, Apple Valley Middle School; and Kathryn Beasley, Hendersonville Middle School.
Thanks to Sharon Eng/Publicity/Photo Again this year, nine Henderson County art teachers were awarded gift certificates to Hendersonville art supply store and league sponsor The Starving Artist and the on-line supplier School Specialty Arts and Crafts for the purchase of art supplies for their classrooms. The recipient teachers were acknowledged at the February 12 meeting of the art league at The Opportunity House, 1411 Asheville Highway, Hendersonville, NC.
In addition to its normal fund raising efforts during the year, in 2016, the ALHC created a Go Fund Me page at www.gofundme.com/ALHC-Art-Education. “If Henderson County parents and student relatives donate just a few dollars,” explains ALHC member Sharon Eng, “it wouldn’t take long to reach or exceed our $2000 goal for next year.” Henderson County art teachers often find themselves digging into their own funds to buy supplies for their classrooms. “We typically order all of our supplies for the entire year in the fall,” explained one teacher who preferred to remain anony-mous, “and the budget hasn't changed in probably a decade.” If you can help art students, please chip in for needed sup-plies. Every dollar will help our mission. Thank you!

My husband and I have called North Carolina home since 1987. I am a contributing member and past President of The Art League of Henderson County, an active member of the Arts Council of Henderson County, and The Art League of High-lands, N.C.
My art training began in college. I continue taking classes and workshops with local and nationally known artists to learn and explore new techniques, and to have fun. I am amazed at the many ways there are to express what we see. I'm fascinated with the designs and the wonder of the blending of the colors of nature and I strive to show that in my work. I paint traditionally and semi-abstractly in watercolor, incorporating mixed media into my work. I use acrylics in a bold, contemporary style to depict cityscapes, landscapes and florals. Alternating between mediums keeps my work fresh. The joy of pure color is the catalyst that draws you to look more deeply into my work.
My latest interests include abstract design mini paintings, gold leaf and alcohol inks. I find a freedom in painting abstracts that lets me explore and express my love of color.
I have participated in juried local and regional shows, as well as St. Augustine and W. Palm Beach, FL. I hosted a number of solo shows and received awards for my efforts. My paintings are in many private and corporate collections through out the U.S., and in private collections in Europe, Brazil and Russia.
My work may be seen here: Studios at Flat Rock - 2702A Greenville Highway.

BIO OF MARCH DEMO ARTIST
DR. ALEC HALL, PASTELIST
By Sharon Eng
After many years in the veterinary field, it seemed natural that Alec Hall would choose animals as his primary subject when he took up painting 20 years ago. When he retired from his veterinary practice and turned to art full time, he developed as much of a passion for pastel painting as he has for animals. At the Sunday, March 12th meeting of the Art League of Henderson County, Hall will speak about the history of pastels as an art medium and the similarities and differences between pastels and other fine art media. He will also explain some of the supplies and techniques he uses when working with pastels.
Watercolor artist Pamela Haddock has been drawing all her life, yet four years ago she put down the pencil and picked up new tools. She applies broad strokes of watercolor paint with a print brayer (a type of soft roller), spritzes it with water from a spray bottle, and then uses a subtraction process to remove some of the darker hues with a razor blade. Her luminous paintings aren’t guided by sketches, but reflect Haddock’s evolution toward abstraction. She likens the process to putting together a puzzle of color and shapes.

ARTIST JIM CARSON
ABOUT JIM CARSON, AIS
Jim Carson was the managing partner in the law firm of Chambless, Higdon and Carson, in Macon, Ga., where he practiced law for 31 years.
Although always interested in drawing, even at an early age, Jim’s interest in art was dormant while law school, marriage, raising a family, and build-ing a law practice took precedent.
Jim’s wife gave him a painting course for Christmas in 1989. This art journey culminated in 2003, when Jim retired from law practice, moved to Saluda, N.C., and now paints full time.
Jim paints in a contemporary impressionist style, and is known for his exciting color balance and his bold and spontaneous brushwork. Jim gives both indoor and plein air workshops throughout the USA.
Jim is a Signature Member of The American Impressionist Society, hav-ing been accepted to the 2012, 2014, and 2015 national juried exhibi-tions, a member of Plein Air Painters of the Southeast (PAP-SE), a group of distinguished and nationally known South Eastern artists, and an Associ-ate Member of Oil Painters of America. Jim won the Associate Member Award of Distinction in the 2015 National American Impressionist Society Exhibition, and was recently juried in the Oil Painters of America Salon Show of Traditional Oil Paintings, at Castle Gallery Fine Art, in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

ENG’S “NEW JOURNEY EXHIBIT”
SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 10
When artist Sharon Eng moved to Hendersonville in April two years ago, she thought she and her husband had settled here for good. She should have known better.
In 46 years of marriage, she can’t recall living in any one house longer than five years and living in any area for more than 14 years. Now, almost two years to the day, they are moving again. Although they have lived in several cities in Florida, this time they are relocating to North Port near Fort Myers, where Eng’s husband grew up, but where they have never lived as a couple. Needless to say, Eng’s mother-in-law, a 91-year-old artist and her inspiration, is thrilled to have them nearby.
Eng is an exhibiting artist at Art Mob Studios and Market-place in Hendersonville. To mark her departure, Art Mob is hosting a New Journey Exhibit of Eng’s acrylic mixed media paintings and abstract digital photography now through March 25. The public is invited to a reception at the gallery on Friday, Mar. 10, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All of Eng’s artwork is specially priced during the exhibit.
“I certainly don’t want to pack more than I have to,” Eng said. “If someone has admired a piece, perhaps with a sub-stantial savings, it will motivate them to claim it while it’s still available.”
Before she had even begun looking to move, Eng had sub-mitted some art to the Artscape project in downtown Hen-dersonville. Artscape was to select 40 artworks to be repro-duced on banners to decorate the downtown area. At about the same time that Eng decided to make the move, she was notified that one of paintings had been selected. Unfortunately, since she will no longer be a resident before the banners are produced, she had to withdraw.
“Even though I won’t have my painting on display down-town,” Eng said, “I am so honored that it was considered worthy to be in the inaugural Artscape exhibit.” The painting that was selected, “Mountain Glow,” is on exhibit at Art Mob and is available for purchase.

Pamela Winkler graduated from Miami University (of Ohio) with a BA in Art History and a Masters of Architecture. She worked as a licensed architect in both Ohio and North Caroli-na. In 2009 a course in pastels led to a new passion, and to her painting full time in her studio in Asheville, NC.

took First Place at the VA Art Show at the Asheville

on to the Nationals later this year. Last year there
were over 3800 entries. Jeff donated the painting
