Margaret Thatcher and Britain Margaret Thatcher became leader of the Conservative Party in 1975. In 1979 she became British Prime Minister and went on to win a further 2 general elections until she was ousted by plotters in 1990. Unlike some sections of women working in British business today, Margaret Thatcher was not one to complain about the mythical "glass ceiling" or try to introduce new laws to make it easier for women to succeed in the British workplace. Margaret Thatcher succeeded through her own effort, self will, intelligence and determination. She was hated and still is by the left wing BBC for her anti state, pro private enterprise agenda, and her alliance with President Reagan that later led to the downfall of Socialism in Russia and eastern Europe. It was the wreckage that was Britain in 1978 that swept Margaret Thatcher to power in 1979. Britain was then on the verge of bankruptcy, militant left wing unions were holding the country to ransom demanding higher wages, strikes were called often after rigged ballots, rotting rubbish piled up on the streets, and the state owned British Steel factory was losing millions of pounds each day. This was just a glimpse of how bad Britain had sunk under the socialist agenda of the Labour Party. One of the first policies of Margaret Thatcher was to reduce government spending, promote private businesses, promote a culture of incentives, enterprise and a reduction in taxation. Margaret Thatcher's monetarism plan involved controlling inflation. This required control of the money supply through the reduction of government debt. Interest rates were raised, and government spending slashed. This had the desired effect of reducing inflation. New laws were introduced to stop the dinosaurs of militant leftist unions. Intimidation by flying pickets was banned. Secret ballots of union members became compulsory. One of Margaret Thatcher's greatest triumphs was the decision to win back the Falkland islands after they were invaded by Argentinian soldiers in April 1982. There has been a British presence living peacefully on the Falklands since 1833. All the people are of British heritage. Despite this, some British ministers especially those in the Labour Party wanted to negotiate and surrender to Argentina and then present the loss and humiliation of the Falklands as a victory for diplomacy. It was also later revealed in secret transcripts from the National Security Council that President Ronald Reagan tried to push Mrs Thatcher into a "diplomatic initiative". The so called Brazilian peace plan involved a so called "ceasefire". In the recorded conversation which took place on May 31 1982, the British Prime Minister had the spine and strength of mind to reject President Reagan's proposal that would basically would have amounted to a British surrender. Mrs Thatcher did not cave in to weak ministers at home, or Argentinian bully boy tactics. She ordered a naval task force 8, 000 miles to take back the islands. British losses amounted to 258 killed and over 700 wounded. Argentina soldiers killed were 649 with over 1000 wounded. Victory for Britain in June 1982 was welcomed with great relief. Margaret Thatcher played her decisive role achieving a famous victory ensuring that Britain could call itself great once more.
