Margaret Bourke-White: The Early Years

"I feel that utter truth is essential," Bourke-White said of her work, "and to get that truth may take a lot of searching and long hours." "The camera is a remarkable instrument. Saturate yourself with your subject and the camera will all but take you by the hand.“

Her father was an inventor, engineer, and an amateur photographer who introduced her to machines of all types - including the camera. Her mother was considered a very forward thinking woman for the early 1900s.Margaret and her sister Ruth were taught at home by their mother, who was reportedly quite strict at monitoring all outside influences on their life.

Margaret Bourke-White Goes to War

Bourke-White was the first female war correspondent and the first woman to be allowed to work in combat zones during World War II. In 1941, she travelled to the Soviet Union just as Germany broke its pact of non-aggression. She was the only foreign photographer in Moscow when German forces invaded. Taking refuge in the U.S. Embassy, she then captured the ensuing firestorms on camera.

HOW THIS RELATES TO OUR WORK

• Most of Margaret’s work is documented of journalism photographs. However, her work portrays the still life of the ongoing reality and she depicts this by using different kind of camera shots such as close, up, long shot, Camera angle, Dolly zoom, The two shot, Tracking shot, Dutch shot, Dutch tilt, The rule of thirds, and Cutaway. She uses this methods to represent the harsh reality. This is going to help us with out own project as our performance require taking still pictures, we need to understand and learn how to use these different camera shots.

• This will be valuable as it is going to facilitate us with the different shots we need to do in order to make our performance a winning project.
