MARDI GRAS

Mardi Gras is the

name of the carnival

that takes place in

New Orleans ,

Louisiana and Mobile,

Alabama ( USA ) .

Its name derives from French , which

translates directly into Spanish as " fat

Tuesday" , ( like the Spanish Maundy

Thursday ) but is traditionally known as "

Mardi Gras ". Held the day before Ash

Wednesday.

Mardi Gras is

properly the parade

that takes place on

the last day, but

often, it is associated

with the season.

The so-called " Fat Tuesday " means

that it was the last day to enjoy the

culinary delights as much flesh

before the withdrawal period that

marks the beginning of Holy Week

and Lent .

WHEN DOES THIS CELEBRATION

TAKE PLACE?

The celebration take place 46 days before

Easter and it is always the days before Ash

Wednesday

WHAT IS A PARADE?

The parade consist of

anywhere from 10 to 40 floats carrying krewe

members, marching bands,

dance groups and costumed

characters

WHAT ARE THE THEMES OF THE

PARADE

Every parade has a theme,

usually borrowed from

mythology, history or

Hollywood.

WHAT IS A KREWE?

A term applied to the people who belong to your

“Club.” or parade. Your membership dues pay for

your, costumes, throws, and float.

WHAT ARE FLOATS?

The floats are movable platform for

carrying Carnival maskers

WHAT ARE THE COSTUMES AND

MASK FOR?

Costumes and masks are a long

time tradition on Mardi Gras

Day.

People spend all year making

costumes that glorify heroes,

ridicule public figures, or

poke fun at customs,

traditions, or current events.

Masking is permitted only on

Mardi Gras Day, and masks

must be removed at dark.

The colors of mardi gras are purple, green and gold. The purple represent the justice, the green represent the faith and the gold represent the

power.
