Polite Notice Please can we remind members of the village that the bins at the rear of the

school are not for use by anyone other than the school or persons hiring the

community centre. School were unable to discard of rubbish due to someone

disposing their carpet in our main bin.

The exercising of dogs is not permitted on the playing field or play area.

Eric McConkey I would like to thank the residents of Marden for their help and support

following the death of Eric after he lost his long battle with Cancer. Thank

you for all the cards, messages and offers of help, it has been a great comfort

at this sad time. The attendance at the funeral was overwhelming and with

donations from that day and others received by post I am delighted to be

handing over £1000 plus to St Michael’s Hospice. They were so caring and

supportive which made Eric’s last few months there comfortable and

peaceful.

Michael Parkes Our Parish Council has been given a double blow with the

resignation of both Rob Bartup and Michael Parkes. Although

Michael had not been with us as long as Rob who was co-

opted in 2008. He was our first chairman of our Parish Plan

and like Rob was a very valued member and contributed in

many useful ways and so I have offered to collect from

anyone who may wish to give a contribution to a presentation.

I will close this at the end of October and hopefully make the

presentation in November.

Village Communion We have started Village Communion again and Rev

Alison Leigh will be the officiant. Our next

communion is on Tuesday October 17th at 2pm and

there after on the third Tuesday of each month, it will

be in news and views.

Litter Pick Once again we are doing a litter pick around our

village and would welcome any help to tidy up before

winter. We will be meeting at the community centre

car park at 10 am on Saturday 14th October. It takes

about an hour if we can get enough people to cover all

roads into our village. Gloves, bags, high vis vests and

litter pickers provided so come along to help our

village keep a tidy appearance.

Pet Service October 8th 11.15 at Marden Church.

This popular service for anyone of any age who has

pets from stick insects to large dogs, tortoises, cats

and rabbits are welcome. Singing dogs and cats are

welcome to join the choir. If anyone hasn’t got a live

pet but has a soft toy which has become their pet bring

that too! It’s a FUN service for all. We follow it with

suitable refreshments for all pets and their owners.

VILLAGE CLUB NEWS MARDEN WI At our September meeting Vic Harnett gave us a fascinating illustrated talk about a trip which he and his wife recently took

to Uganda. They travelled across wide area by car, boat and on foot visiting three national parks. Part of the trip was taken up

with gorilla trekking and they were able to see several of these amazing creatures quite close to. The lush equatorial forests of

the country are home to an extraordinary number of animals including elephants, hippos, chimpanzees, a wide variety of

types of antelope and some beautiful birds including a rare blue spoonbill. They were also lucky enough to see a leopard

which lay down in front of the car for about an hour. Vic also spoke about how the tourist industry helps local people who

have had to give up their agricultural way of life in order to preserve the gorillas. He was thanked by Wendy Steadman.

Our speaker on Thursday 12th October is Rhys Griffith who will be speaking on the subject of Lugwardine Tiles and the

decorative floor tile manufacturers William Godwin and Sons who were based at Lugwardine between 1860 and 1912.

This month’s competition is An Autumn Poem (maximum of 10 lines) so why not try your hand at some poetry writing?

Who knows you could be another John Keats!

Members are reminded to start planning their pieces for the Christmas Extravaganza which will provide the entertainment for

the Christmas party meeting in December.

If you have not been to a WI meeting before why not come along as a visitor. You will be made very welcome.

Guides News 1st Marden Guides & Senior Section are looking forward to an exciting term. We are trying out some new activities from

Girlguiding’s new programme, which will be launched next year. After a suggestion from Stan Gyford, we are now raising

money for Hereford Visual Links, which is a local charity supporting visually impaired people in Herefordshire. We are

looking forward to a visit from a guide dog, trying out special glasses to see what it is like to have a visual impairment, and

learning some Braille. Later in the term we will be supporting Parliament week by having an election, and doing lots of

Christmas crafts!

New members are always welcome in Brownies, Guides and Senior Section. Why not come along to a meeting to find out

more about us?

MARDEN GARDENERS We held our annual Autumn Show on 2nd September, entries were slightly down on last year but there was a good turnout of

visitors.

Sue Price won the Top Tray prize for her vegetables, Anne Simpson won the Top Vase prize. Floral Art was won by Fiona

Shutler, Cookery and Preserves by Sue Price and Handicrafts by Louisa Ash.

Childrens Classes were won by Milo Williams and Sophie Dickinson. Well done to everyone who took part and many thanks

to those who helped on the day and, of course, everyone who came along to admire the entries and enjoy the refreshments.

We met back in the Community Centre on 12th September when Robin Pearce came to talk about Late Summer Colour with

Herbaceous Plants. His inspiring talk was illustrated with slides of beautiful plants which all are at their best at this time of

the year and gave us lots of ideas for different ways to use them and how to plant in different combinations

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 10th October When Nicholas Clarke will be talking about “Spring in Texas”. Mr Clarke

has visited us before and his talks are always illustrated with beautiful slides and amusing anecdotes about his travels. He

also raises money for St Richards Hospice by collecting foreign currency, either current or obsolete. If you have any foreign

coins or notes that you would like to donate please bring them along on the evening or pass to a member of the committee in

advance.

Visitors are most welcome for just £2.00 each, which includes refreshments after the talk.

MARDEN ARTS & CRAFTS In October we welcome Garry Jones who will be demonstrating the ceramic items he makes. Many of the titles of his pieces

are based on puns which will certainly bring a smile to your face. He is an innovative ceramicist and an amusing speaker so it

will be an entertaining evening.

Join us in the Community Centre on Monday 23rd October at 7.45pm. We look forward to seeing you and if you have not

been to a MACS meeting before, you are very welcome to come as a visitor.

MARDEN HISTORY SOCIETY We have had our AGM and are now looking forward to planning our programme for 2018. To help us with this we have our

copy of the 2018 History Society Calendar which is now available to buy at a bargain price of just £5. This calendar is built

around Brian Skinner’s photographs of some of the beautiful listed buildings in the parish, a reminder of the heritage of the

area ideal for sharing with friends and family.

As we continue with this year’s programme, we are looking forward to a visit from Jess Tidball on Monday, October 16 th to

tell us about the local flora and fauna, the natural history that shapes our lives in so many ways.

Looking further forward there are two things I need to let you know about in advance.

Firstly, our Annual Quiz Night this year will be held on Saturday, November 18th. rather than the Monday night we have held

it in the past. This will be in the Community Lounge starting at 7.30pm, further details in next month’s News and Views.

Secondly, our December Social Gathering is scheduled for lunch time on Wednesday 13th December at the Amberley Arms,

advance booking is required so fuller details will be available at our October meeting.

I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting at 7.45 on October 16th.

CHAPEL CHAT

For the first time in its seventeen year history we held a meeting in August. When the Friendship Hour was formed a number

of members had school age children and so were busy during the summer holidays. The decision to skip this month also kept

it in line with other clubs and societies in the village; however, in a break with tradition we organised a strawberry tea and

fifteen of us enjoyed an informal get together. As it was voted a success we shall probably do something similar next year.

Meanwhile, our programme of guest speakers, slide shows and "at home" afternoons is now under way.

If you care to join us in Marden Chapel at 2.15 on the last Thursday in each month (December excepted) you will be made

most welcome.

MOTHERS’ UNION

Rev Alison Leigh will celebrate Holy Communion with the branch on Tuesday 10 October 2017 at 2.30 pm in St Ethelbert's

Room, Marden Church. Please note that this is the second Tuesday of the month. Anyone who would like to join us is very

welcome. Thank you to Rhoda Woodcock for organising our September Harvest Thanksgiving. Gifts of fresh produce and

tinned food were taken to Hope Scott House in Hereford after the meeting.

The New Community Facility Group and The Marden Village Trust AGM: 2nd October 7.30pm Community Lounge: Please come along and support your Community Centre. The Centre is for

your benefit, not so that a few people, i.e. the Trustees can spend their time running a facility. The Community Centre must

be supported by the community. That does not mean just booking it for events and then turning up for them, it means that the

community must be involved in the running of the facility. We need at least four more Trustees. Meetings are currently

monthly in the evening. Due to the progress we have made over the last year we want to try to have them every other month.

So please remember that the Community Centre does not run itself. If none of the groups who use it are willing to help run it

well the sentence does not need finishing does it?

The grant money from the Parish Council is being spent. The new flooring is down and the Village Trust have received many

positive comments about it. Can I ask you not to drag the chairs and tables over it. I know they are heavy but they are what

we have so please try to carry them. We have bought a new broom and long handled dustpan and brush. At the end of your

session, the flooring should just need sweeping. Best not to start mopping it unless you really have to in which case there are

cleaning instructions up in the kitchen.

Installing the internet has got a little more complicated because it transpires that the telephone line in the Community Centre

is still registered with Hereford County Council although the Village Trust pays the bills! It’s getting sorted ...slowly ! Once

the internet is up and running, Fastershire would be interested in running a session on ‘Introduction to Computers and the

Internet’. They provide the computers. Anyone interested?

The final project your Community facility was awarded grant money for, is to redecorate the Community Lounge. As I

explained last month we had hoped to do this during the summer holiday but the grant had not come through so it is looking

as though it might not be able to be done until next summer. Now, not wanting to wait that long, the Trustees wondered

whether there would be any willingness to organise a few weekend working parties and do it ourselves. Let me know if you

would be willing to help…… If cake and tea were to be provided of course that would be a great incentive!

In order to make the handing out and collection of keys more efficient and in response to a request from our insurers, a key

safe, a bit like the ones that some of our more vulnerable residents have installed so carers can access their homes in an

emergency, is going to be fitted to the brick pillar by the front door. We will write to all regular users of the Community

Facility about this and organise an afternoon / evening session to explain how the new system will work.

Finally, over the last few months there have been a couple of instances of the toilets, both gents and ladies being left in a

disgusting state. The cleaners do clean the toilets. I’m not sure they should be expected to clean the pans after people have

used them and not flushed them. However, they do not necessarily get cleaned between one hiring and the next. So please

leave the toilets in a state in which you would like to use them.

Please come along and even more importantly, please put yourself forward as a Trustee and help run your Community

MARDEN PARISH COUNCIL

The last parish council meeting was on 11 September when matters including the following were considered: purchase of a Speed

Indicator Device jointly with Sutton St Nicholas; 12 parish council meetings a year so that extra meetings are less likely to be

called to deal with planning applications; issues with walking footpaths when livestock are in the fields – Cllr Mike Darley

offered to show people how to move stock on, please contact him on 07859 917534 if you’re interested. Cllr Kate Ryan was

elected as Vice Chair and Paula Barrett was welcomed as the new councillor elected following the resignation of Rob Bartup.

Next Parish Council Meeting – Monday 9 October 2017 at 7:30 pm in the Community Centre – All welcome.

Vacancy on the Parish Council

Following the resignation of Michael Parkes, 10 members of the electorate have asked for an election for a replacement

councillor. The notice of poll will be published early October and if more than one person is nominated, the election is likely to

be on 9 November. Please check the parish website and noticeboards, the Clerk will put notices up as soon as they are received

from Herefordshire Council. If you register for the notification service on the website (see below), you will receive an email alert

when notices are displayed.

Parish Freighter

The freighter will be available on Saturday 14 October 11.00-1.00. Please do not leave bags or other rubbish before the

freighter’s arrival – you should not expect someone else to deal with your items. Litter Pick – meet in the carpark at 10.00 –

equipment and bags provided.

New Community Facilities Group

Please see page 17 for more details of the next fundraising event and next meeting.

There will be an update for the parish about next stages of work for the group at the PC meeting in October – we hope many

parishioners will attend.

Traffic Management Group

Next meeting is at 6:00 pm on Wednesday 4 October in the Community Centre – All welcome. The Group will be looking at

costs for work in the parish to recommend to the parish council.

The Wildside of Marden:

Autumn has come to us what seems early, but it is how I remember September as a child and we have been enjoying Indian

summers over the last few years and been spoilt with the warm weather. It has turned chilly especially at night and our furry

beasts and insects that hibernate are stuffing themselves with foods to help them through the winter. Unfortunately for the

hedgehog scurrying across the road it has not always been good news however, I have had many reports of these prickly

creatures living, breeding and seen in Marden. We had many more butterflies this summer until the cold and wet weather

where they seemed to disappear but on sunny days, the red admirals and the whites are still flitting about. The birds are

filling up their tummies on our feeders and a sparrow hawk zoomed with incredible speed through our garden but luckily not

after our birds. As I mentioned these birds I remembered as I was coming through the main part of Marden village I spotted a

sparrow hawk but it was being chased by a magpie not the other way round. These magpies are very bold birds. Sitting on a

telegraph pole was a buzzard mantling over his catch and a magpie was sidling up to him along the wire to see if he could

upset the buzzard to relieve him of his dinner. What a cheek! The trees are turning colour and the leaves are already falling to

provide cover for many creatures. It always fascinates me on how many different types of beasties live under the mouldy

leaves and some of the 8 legged friends are coming into our homes to find their mate and make a nest that will sit over the

winter to produce the next generation in the spring. I have to make sure there are none about in the rooms my daughter

inhabits when she returns in the winter, she can just about cope with a money spider. There must be an instinct in us that

makes us wary of spiders and snakes, a bit like horses being afraid of pigs, as wild pigs would have been a danger to horses

in the natural state. As we don ourselves up in thicker clothing and put on our heating remember that many animals in the

wild that are hiding in our homes and gardens and need your help to keep them safe. Jess
