RICHARD GRAHAMWhy is Guernsey’s first language English? Why do our students attend universities inSouthampton and London rather than Caen andParis? Why do The Times, Daily Telegraph orGuardian drop through our letter boxes and notL’Express, Le Figaro or Le Monde? Why is Guernsey not amember of the EU and Eurozone? For that matter, why do wehave a finance industry? And why did Victor Hugo seek refugehere? Of course, we all know why, don’t we ? ….or do we? It allbegan in 1066 didn’t it? Or was it 1204? Or even 1254? And whatabout 1259? Come to that, what about all that happened since?Besides, here we are in the 21st century, so does it matteranyway? It was his experience of fourteen years in hisappointment at Government House which motivated ColonelRichard Graham to write ‘Guernsey and the Crown’, anenlightening and fascinating insight into the historical relationshipbetween the two and a thoughtful, astute appreciation of itssignificance in determining Guernsey’s rare and little understoodplace in the world as a Crown Dependency.
